A Day in Durham, NC with Blu
Warm Dog Day in Carrboro -Flying Poop, Crazy Dog, and a Little Dog Training
I took Blu out to do some dog training in Carrboro NC this weekend. It was t shirt weather and plenty of beer and coffee drinkers were sitting out on the patios. I like bringing him out into the warm weather, always working on his training, plus there was plenty of well behaved and not so well behaved dogs.
Blu was kept in a heel position, but I was letting him enjoy all the new smells. Whenever, I find a little open area away from the road, I let him explore and smell every wooden post and patch of long grass that every other dog sniffed and peed on.
I saw a group of labs crossing the street. One was an uncoordinated happy puppy with a wandering mind, looking like he was thinking; whats this, whats that, whats this . Blu was already in a down but looks up at me with focus until they all pass by.
We keep walking down the sidewalk and when passers come by Blu moves a little closer to me. At times someone will pass by and Blu will stretch his head sniff, sniff, sniff not sure if he is picking up a smell of food or an unpleasant odor straying off their body. Dogs are so direct with their approach and sometimes your thinking in your head kind of embarrassed “Stop smelling them!”
Walking by a parking lot, a dog in a red truck with owner starts squeeeezing its body through the half open window with his paws over the glass rawrk rawrk rawrk , Blu looks and continues walking rawrk rawrk rawrk the owner seems like he tries to make the dog come back in the truck but he was not budging. I knew this dog meant business if he jumped out, tense body and direct focus wanting to lunge forward on my dog, and I was ready for that dog to come sliding over that window. Knowing I would have to protect Blu and prevent a bad interaction. This is something all dog owners need to always keep a lookout for.
Continuing on to where they usually hold the Carrboro farmers market there is some open area. New fresh mulch with probably manure was put down. I let Blu run off leash and of course heads right into the pile of mulch. He looks at me like “this is great” with all this energy and smelly mulch flying in the air from his quick turns, but I recall him quickly. Thinking of having to wash him multiple times trying to remove manure mulch from his fur like a skunk. I set him on a free again and right before he heads back into it I tell him nope and he diverges, setting a boundary for his obedience training. Spending a little time here, with not too much room for him to roam, we head back.
Of course, walking back on the other side of the road I hear rawrk rawrk rawrk. Yeah that dog is still there, as the owner puts up the window, and the dog still going just fogging up the window with steam and slob dripping down. Blu is just taking in a strong scent with his nose flaring like this is soo good. We get back to the car and Blu lays down in the back seat with his head on the door sill with his eyes closing shut and pressing the switch as the window rolls down from his chin.
Carrboro was a great day for the weather and a little dog training to keep my dog from smelling like poop.
