Anyways I like the "moss moomin" thing because trolls, in tales, are creatures who turn into stone (unwillingly), so it just makes sense that moomintrolls do too, eventually.
In case you want to get even more sad, you should also consider that the woodies grow up to turn into woods. Which means that, if you take those two headcanons,
Snufkin is left completely alone when he's older.
I wonder how much it must hurt to be a wanderer who wanders through family. Trees and flowers and mushrooms and moss, everything reminds you of who you loved so much and lost so unfairly to nature.
That's why it's easy to picture him being the one to beg Moomintroll for staying by his side during Winter in the future.
