Vancouver is a world away from Istanbul, which is where she started. After her parents divorced while she was young, owing to her father being involved in something illegal she never got details on. Unable to support young Kadriye on her own, Kadriye’s mom followed her parents to Vancouver, where Kadriye’s grandfather had a promising job offer as an electrical engineer. The opportunity was squandered, though, because alcoholism claimed his life via liver failure only three years after they arrived. Her grandmother was unable to face life alone in a new country and soon passed, too. Though Kadriye’s mother tried to succeed, for the sake of her daughter, alcohol ran through their veins, too. It was thinner than blood but more powerful, and, when Afet Köse could no longer afford alcohol, she turned to men and also to other substances.
Kadriye never knew what her mother overdosed on, but it was easier that way. It meant she didn’t have to condemn any one particular drug and all of them were available to some extent. She didn’t have a lot of personal boundaries left and life was rough for her as a homeless teenager. She scammed a car out of some guy with a well-placed bet and the last of her pocket change, so then at least there was something resembling a roof over her head.
By the time she was seventeen, she had a list of arrests and trips through the hospital as long as her leg.
It took one person, a social worker, to turn everything around. She gave Kadriye something she hadn’t had before: a choice. The person who had lived day to day, and sometimes moment to moment, didn’t have a lot, but she had enough. She had food and a place to shower and a bed to sleep in. The addiction treatment facility in Vancouver, boosted by private sponsorship to get her started, was everything. It absolutely saved her life and Kadriye decided she didn’t actually want to leave. Instead, she finished her high school certificate so she could get a job at the centre. She’s worked her way up from harm reduction worker to residence support worker, and is now a peer support specialist. She has a goal to attend university so she can be a counsellor, but what she has in time she lacks in funding. The good news is, whatever she previously lacked in discipline and planning, she now makes up for with confidence and work ethic.
