Born on June 30, 1997 in Istanbul, Turkey, to Afet and Ayaz Demir.  Her name was changed to reflect her mother’s unmarried name when the Köses moved to Boston chasing an engineering job opportunity for her grandfather.  By then, Kadriye was ten years old and her father had disappeared.  She never had details on where he went or what happened to him, other than he was most likely in prison.

Her family members fell in painfully quick succession.  Her grandfather died of complications related to alcohol use; her grandmother followed because her heart was broken and she couldn’t cope in all her grief.  Kadri’s mom, in no real position to support herself and a thirteen year old girl, turned to a series of men and, eventually, that came to include substance use as well.  Afet died of a drug overdose when Kadriye was just fifteen.  As an immigrant family, they were only sort of part of any system.  The only fortunate thing was she barely qualified for DACA, and it had been filed on her behalf with her family’s immigration paperwork, so she wasn’t deported back to Istanbul. 

Kadri was homeless and adrift after her family died, crashing anywhere she could.  When she couldn’t find legitimate jobs, she still found a way, including at some point scamming a car off some dude that she went on to live in for over a year, until she crashed it and the property damage ensured she appeared before a judge. 

Through a plea deal, and the grace of a victim’s advocate, she avoided charges and deportation and, instead of was given one opportunity and sponsored through alcohol and substance treatment.  To this day, she’s well aware that isn’t how it works for most people and she is trying hard to live in a way that will thank and honor the social worker who saved her.     

She completed treatment and fell into old patterns, specifically ones involving @jacksoncassidy.  Even though they met through street life, it seemed like an idea that resulted in a roof over her head so she accepted.  She should’ve known, though, he was one of her many addictions.  She craved his presence and companionship more than anyone’s and, after some sex that played a major role in ruining his young and ill-advised marriage, she knew she had to find her own path or she wouldn’t succeed in life. 

The year Kadri turned eighteen was busy, and that was the best possible option.  It kept her mind off all the messes.  She earned her GED and her citizenship in succession.  She moved for a short time, following her first-ever job opportunity as a peer recovery specialist, because she needed a certificate a not-so-local community college offered in order to secure the job.  

Job and school opportunities, plus a desire to be closer to the closest thing to a true mother she’d ever known, brought her back to Boston from Haverhill within a fairly short time.  She buckled down and began working to save nickels and dimes to get her through school.  She knows it’ll be a long road with puddle jumps along the way, but she’s willing to put in the work like her life depends on it -- because it does.  

She’s finished her associates degree so far, but she’s bound and determined to work herself through a Ph.D or something similar so she can become a full-time, dedicated substance abuse counselor.  It’s the only ending she can see after everything she’s been through.

Jack’s hands were shoved deep into his pockets, arms tucked tightly against himself to keep in as much body heat as possible. His mind was racing, though, which meant he could more or less ignore just how cold it was and instead turn over exactly what life had thrown at him the last few days.

But all that did was make him light a cigarette about halfway to his meeting point with Kadri, sucking aggressively on the end of it like a race to the finish would give him all the answers he needed. He was a mixed up mess, finding himself even more jumbled as the drinks he’d had tonight threw an extra wrench in there. 

His relief at the sight of her was instantaneous, his lips pulling wide in a boyish grin as the cigarette hung out one side of his mouth. “I guess that depends on the current going rate of your whiles.” He extended an arm and wrapped it around her shoulders, tugging her into a side hug that he didn’t let up even as he turned and ushered her back in the direction of his apartment. He never lingered too long on just how well she fit into his side. The thought alone made him want to loosen his grip, some innate part of him ready to cut and run at the drop of a hat. Still, he tugged her closer, his steps a little staggered. He peered down at her still cocooned in his arm. “No fuckin’ wonder you’re so cold, you’re taking baby steps. I feel like I’m walking backwards.”

She tilted her head and narrowed her eyes at him, his rakishly handsome looks punctuated by the cigarette hanging out of his mouth.  She had actually kind of enjoyed cigarettes, a post-rehab perk, but she had been unable to afford them for long.  She was tempted to remove the one from his mouth but, instead, she slid into what she freely thought of as ‘her’ spot at his side.  He held his arm up first, so maybe they were equally on board.  Only once the physical greeting was done did she bother with a reply in actual words.  “The going rate is pretty high,” she said, emphasizing her t’s and dragging out the word ‘pretty.’  She was immediately warming as they walked and she was grateful for it.  He was definitely better than the wool coat she’d bought two years ago on clearance.  He also had an uncanny ability to warm her from the inside out instead of the reverse.  

“I don’t have giraffe legs,” she countered, walking at the same rate she had been, completely unbothered by his feedback.  “Unlike some other people involved in this conversation.”

Really, Kadriye hadn’t been up to anything when Jack texted.  Allegedly, she had to go work at the coffee shop up the street at 5:30, but she wasn’t the only one scheduled and she had been diligent enough it wouldn’t be a big deal to call off.  In fact, she kept her phone in her hand as she walked, teetering on the edge of just doing it.  Such was Jack’s influence on her.  She still walked with a smile on her face, toward him.  She couldn’t help it. 

She was busy ignoring the fact it felt like a lot of old pulls she was very familiar with. 

“Fuck, it is cold,” she said, burrowing down into her coat a little further once she saw him approach.  She still had a stupid smile, so whatever.  “You better make this worth my while, Jack.”

The most stable place Kadriye has ever lived is her current house.  Though she has four other roommates, she doesn’t care. The moment she was able to upgrade to a room of her own, from the futon, was one of the first moments she actually believed she might actually be okay someday.
