Was looking forward to new MOTU movie and it didn’t disappoint.
Great music, great acting (nick is excellent), fun movie that acknowledged the brand’s history and lore but wasn’t afraid to buck the status quo when it served a purpose.
My thoughts/stuff i like *spoilers*:
- you’d think they start adam on earth - but they didnt! By not having adam having to remember stuff, and not over-explain movie logic at the start i thought was smart, and they could just focus on who adam was.
- enjoyed all the homage and references, and my fave bit was ‘they’re called that because thats what little adam calls them’ - hilarious.
- i can’t believe they did that to moss man. Meanwhile ‘dion’ (?) survives the movie. Did she do sy-clone’s bit there at the end?
- roboto being a girl caught me by surprise, but i can see towards the end why’d they do that. Idris got to do a lot with the character, stuff you dont see because he’s usually so stoic.
- the other MOTUs were pretty good and got decent screen time. I’m trying to think of some other masters I’d rather see than the ones from the old live action movie, but overall the movie did them justice.
- on he-man and skeletor themselves, they were perfect. He-man embodies everything from the cartoon/mini comics and more - that he can be funny/goofy, heroic/strong, that its ok to be vulnerable and that strength comes with in. And skeletor was just the right balance of campy and menacing. Really great voice work by leto.
- miscellaneous stuff: movie wasn’t stingy with the extras (orko, she-ra). we got to see more cartoon accurate costumes at the end (teela looks great and i hope that version gets a toy). Wish we saw more of eternia but what we saw looked good, i especially liked the forest. Love the music, totally got me in my feels.
We’ll see if the movie is good enough to get a sequel or spin off but looking forward to rewatching this on streaming service.
