Hinata and the ‘Shy‘ Character Type
I have a confession to make. I’m shy, much like Hinata. In fact, I’m terribly shy. I can barely hold up a conversation or look someone in the eye for very long. I mumble and I often stutter out my words.
I have a lot of social anxiety. Conflict between my friends/family/people I know sends me into a panic attack. Just the thought of being late makes me want to pass out. It takes me a little while to start acting more like ‘myself’ even in the presence of people I’ve known my whole life but haven’t been around very much.
To be honest, it sucks not being able to express myself properly, to have my heart racing every time someone is trying to have a friendly conversation with me, to worry about saying something stupid and imagining all the terrible things they must think of me for misspeaking.
Over my years on the internet, something that really disgusted me is that people fetishize people with anxiety. “Aw, you stutter over your words, how cute.” “Aw, you’re too shy to look me in the eye, KAWAII~!” “You’re so shy, don’t worry, I love shy people.” “You’re so shy and innocent, I bet you’re still a virgin huh.” “Wow, you’re SO innocent, don’t worry, I’ll teach you everything I know.” “Shy people are great, they never get angry or fight against you. They’re so easy, you know?” “When I get a girl, I want her to be shy and quiet, absolutely perfect woman.”
Do you think shy people enjoy fretting over every word they say in a conversation wondering if they’ll say something wrong and make you hate them forever? Do you think shy people enjoy having creepy ass dudes wanting to get in a relationship with them because they think you’re easy and you won’t resist or cause problems???
There’s literally a whole subculture of men desiring women who can barely speak up while they act out their sexual desires. “Oh, she’s not saying no, she must want it.” “She’s so shy and cute, she’s acting this way because she wants it.”
But it goes two ways. This is where self inserting comes in. A lot of creepy dudes relate themselves to Naruto. They think they’re cool and tough and they’re ready to hop on top of the shy girl who won’t resist them —-> Hinata. They want a shy quiet girl who has nothing going for them other than themselves. (urg, god it’s so creepy. I’ve met so many guys like this and it’s plain gross. You are not the fucking beeznees, you’re gross)
And then they’re the other self inserters that are just as bad. The shy girls like myself who instead of taking responsibility for their own anxiety and shyness, they place the blame on the rest of the world and feel that they are obligated to special things just because they are they way they are. “But I’m shy, so he should accept my feelings even if I don’t express them.” “But I’m shy, it’s not my responsibility to tell him how I feel, he should notice me instead.” “But I’m shy, I can’t chase after them, they have to chase after me and come to me.” “But I’m shy, I’ve liked them WAY LONGER than that other girl. How dare she get with him when I liked him first. I don’t care if he didn’t know. I’m shy!!!”
They are also gross people and I’ve also met them. The nerdy girl in the corner who I share so many similarities with, yet we are so different. How can I describe these people? They start to hate people who are outgoing just because they are outgoing. They get this creepy jealousy and say the ugliest things about people just because they have more friends than them. They get so possessive and angry when their crush doesn’t notice them, “That B*TCH!!!! I LIKED HIM WAY MORE THAN SHE DID! SHE’S JUST A WHORE! HE CHOSE THE WRONG GIRL!”
This is why I hate ever admitting that i have even the littlest in common with Hinata. Not all Hinata fans are like that, but about 95% of people are either these creepy guys who want to have their way with someone who won’t resist much, or some creepy girl who demands someone love them with no effort whatsoever.
This is why I’m SO picky with which anime/manga I pick up. I hate harems because 100% of the time, they have that shy character with all kind of creepy undertones written in.
I avoid most ecchi manga now for the same reasons. Some shoujo are like that too.
It is SO hard to find a manga where the characters are just people??? This shy character type… maybe it grosses me out more than others because I resonate with shy, but I hate most of the people who enjoy the shy stereotype.
Sometimes I go as far as to wonder if I’ll ever really find someone to be with because I don’t want to be with a guy who enjoys my shyness and wants to whack off to it. I avoid those people like the plague that they are.
