My Grandfather speaks rapid Cantonese to me. He’s telling me what he wants from McDonalds. The kid behind the counter rolls his eyes at this. The woman behind us in line says “Speak English” under her breathe. The grip my Grandfather has on my arm tightens. My Grandfather can speak English. He can understand English. He can write English. But he came when he was in his twenties, and he has an accent that will never leave. And when he speaks English he hears- “How long have you been here?” “Can you repeat that again?” “I don’t understand you.” And it humiliates him. This man who left his family, who left his life to make a better one. The bravest man I know is embarrassed of his accent. And in McDonalds, the man who crossed the pacific in a freight boat with no papers and no one he knew in this country, bows his head in shame.

Detroit teachers stage “sickout” over horrible conditions, force schools to close
Eighty-eight of Detroit’s 97 public schools were closed Wednesday when teachers participated in a districtwide “sickout” to push for demands related to school conditions and their rights as employees. The protests align with a very high profile visitor in Detroit.
PLEASE continue to share images like this. White people refuse to acknowledge the reality of others until it’s shoved in their faces.
What’s crazy is it’s been like this since I was a child and prolly even before that.. My mother is a DPS school teacher and ain’t much changed, if anything things have gotten worse. She’s been buying school supplies for her students for as long as I can remember.
this makes me so sick like how could the school district allow kids to be in this type of environment

The Only Woman Of Color Honored During The 88th Academy Awards
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy should be a household name. She’s won two Academy Awards– bagging her second one just last night for best documentary short for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.
She’s among a tiny handful of female filmmakers of color in an industry that is plagued by lack of diversity. And she was the only woman of color honored during the 88th Academy Awards, for a film that could revise a barbaric law that allows family members to murder women.
“This week, the Pakistani Prime Minister has said that he will change the law on honor killing after watching this film”
She said: “That is the power of film.”

57 Facts That Prove The Oscars Are (And Have Always Been) So White
Ariana Miyamoto, The First Black Miss Universe Japan 2015
Miyamoto says she entered the competition after a mixed race friend committed suicide because of the teasing she received. So the backlash she’s received is nothing new and will fuel her fight to end racial prejudice.
“I was prepared for the criticism. I’d be lying to say it didn’t hurt at all. I’m Japanese — I stand up and bow when I answer the phone. But that criticism did give me extra motivation,” she told AFP in an interview.
“I didn’t feel any added pressure because the reason I took part in the pageant was my friend’s death. My goal was to raise awareness of racial discrimination,” added Miyamoto, who was bullied as a schoolgirl growing up in the port town of Sasebo, near Nagasaki.
“Now I have a great platform to deliver that message as the first Black Miss Universe Japan. It’s always hard to be the first, so in that respect what Naomi Campbell did was really amazing.”
“I used to get bullied as a kid but I’ve got mentally stronger, to protect myself,” said the model.
“When I was small I stood out and always felt I had to fit in with everyone. I’d try not to bring attention to myself, but now I say what I feel. I do things my own way.”
“I want to start a revolution,” Miyamoto added with a laugh. “I can’t change things overnight but in 100-200 years there will be very few pure Japanese left, so we have to start changing the way we think.”

black-ish made television history last night
Last night, black-ish brought us into the middle of the tough conversations black families have been forced to have more and more recently. It did so with the utmost thought and humor, all the while giving nuanced, important depth to the issues of police brutality — including the characterization of police.
How many altos does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None, they can’t get that high.
How many sopranos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
One, she holds it up and waits for the world to revolve around her.
How many singers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Two. An alto to actually do it and a soprano to stand by and ask “isn’t that a little high for you?”

How do you know a soprano is at your door?
