I know that, within the context of the episode this is going to be a more serious moment, but just looking at these screenshots has me laughing! 😂

Haru is only like 5-6 and already doesn't want to be there. Also, Ritsu is confirmed to be wearing a dress! In the manga we only ever saw the top part of Ritsu's outfit, so it was unclear if the outfit was a dress or not. The inclusion of the tie is interesting, it feels almost like a transition period for Ritsu. Also, with that short hair cut, Ritsu really resembles Kisa. Ritsu is also right around the age when we first get introduced to Kisa too (11 - 12).

Then this next pic:

Hatori looks so done, lol. Momiji attached himself to Hatori right from the start and likely didn't let go through the whole thing. Hatori probably just wanted to be left alone like the (probably) angsty 17-ish year old that he was. Poor Hatori, lol.

I like how this scene reinforces certain character connections and bonds, such as Momiji always having been fond of Hatori, Rin having a certain closeness with Shigure (who did what I always did at family get togethers as a teen - bring a book), Kagura and Ritsu being friends, and Kureno looking at Yuki next to Akito, and eventually ending up in Yuki's place (right next to Akito's side). They are both the only two sitting seiza style in that shot.

The anime really brings these New Year scenes together, there is less of a disjointed feeling. I just really enjoy how realistic this moment feels to the usual family gathering type of event.

Fruits Basket Characters and Flower Language - Part Four

Kagura - Willow/Weeping Willow - obedience, freedom, sorrow, sadness - Season - Late Winter (February) - Early Summer (June)

Other Symbolism: The frog that is at the bottom of the image indicates that the season for Kagura’s image is likely either spring or summer, since those are the two seasons frogs are associated with in Japan. Frog is カエル・かえる (kaeru) in Japanese, this sounds the same as 帰る (kaeru), which means “to return (home).” Frogs are also associated with “good luck” in Japan and red umbrella’s can symbolize warning off evil spirits.

Yuki - Kikyo (Background) - eternal love, honesty, tidy, obedience English Meaning - return of a friend is desired - Season - Fall

Other Symbolism: Cameilla (tsubaki) - General: early youth, young love, “I can’t live without you.” White Meaning - perfect beauty, supreme loveliness, impeccable charm - Season - Spring (but can last until fall and is called “the rose of winter”). 

I’m not 100% certain that Yuki is holding a white camellia, but it would compliment, as well as contrast, nicely with Akito’s red camellia, especially since they are both holding it out to each other. Also, the symbolism of the white camellia is basically everything Yuki is assumed to be by others, but which he feels he actually isn’t.

Akito - Cameilla (tsubaki) - General Meaning - early youth, young love, “I can’t live without you,” Red Meaning - secret beauty, achievement without support - These flowers were often associated with the nobles and samurai in the Edo period. Season - Spring (can last until winter)

Tohru - Sunflower - adoration, loyalty, longevity, longing, “only looking at you”. The sunflowers are seen as a symbol of peace, hope, and faith as well, especially in concerns to radiation. Fukushima planted tons of sunflowers when it was discovered by Japanese scientists that sunflowers can remove radiation from the soil.  - Season: Summer
