     "Something called ‘on line shopping’? It’s quite convenient.”

     Zyanya presented her maker with her present. She was saving her music for another date, the notes weren’t quite right, yet. Which left the brunette to haggle for the rare pendant that she’d acquired. It was two small golden roses twined around each other, set in an oval glass piece.

She carefully took the bag and her fingers slipped inside, and when Kaitleen took it out, a soft, heartwarming curve of her lips lit up the whole place.

“It’s gorgeous, Anya, thank you,” her smile widened as she proceeded to wrap it around her neck for the pendant to fall onto her pale skin. Kai planted a kiss on the youngster’s cheek, then her forehead, hands caressing her shoulders. “I will be quick, yes? Just wait here,” moving back slowly she went out for a couple of moments only to come back with a..Puppy. A tiny, lovable, dressed in a sweater puppy held in her grip. “I really didn’t know if I could find a better present than this one.”

     “I feel as though, I’m figuring out this smartphone pretty easily.”

     “Handy little things.” Zyanya was drawn into Kai’s orbit, a bag that looked suspiciously like a present hanging off her arm as she typed out a text to send off to one of three in her contacts list. She looked up from the small screen and smiled, putting the phone away. For all her bluster about Valentine’s Day, Zyanya had gone through various nooks and crannies of the island to get her maker a present. “You’re not busy, are you?”

“What are you trying to do with it?” Kaitleen raised a brow, her eyes going up from papers to her daughter. Gaze lingering a few more seconds around her, she got up and sat on the edge of the desk instead. “Not really, no. Why?”

An easy silence pervaded across the ancient as he listened to his eldest progeny. A chaotic creature, to be sure, but Kaitleen provided the very best advice in any given situation. It was partially why Marcus was so proud of her, and her capabilities as a sire. She was strong, ruthless, fiercely intelligent, and still compassionate, and a protective mother for her own children and her family. The Grecian offered a quiet thank you as he took the glass and pressed it to his lips, swallowing the amber liquid in three swift swallows. After he set the emptied glass upon the desk, the vampire reached into his jacket and produced the letter his youngest progeny, and former fiancé, wrote to him.

“This is the letter I found,” Marcus told her, pushing it toward her along the smooth wooden top of the desk. “Before his departure. I would like you to read it, if you would. It is perhaps unnecessary to instruct you to do so, but I would strongly prefer for this to remain between the two of us.”

She already knew, he thought, she already knew part of what happened. Perhaps it was the blood bond—the intuitive understanding of a sire’s well being in that moment. Or she heard from another section of the clan. Dark eyes settled down upon his own hands. She had a point, to be sure. He was not a dog. But oh, how often he played the part of the pursuing hound.

Her fingers grasped the paper, crisp under her soft touch, and straightened it on her thigh before giving a brief glance to Marcus, “Of course,” she reassured the elder with a nod. If there was a thing she was really good at, it was keeping secrets, no doubt. Eyes scanned the letter thoroughly, lips moving only in the middle of it, and her jaw twitching once. “This is absurd,” breathed she, brows furrowing. “You are not going to seek him out, are you? It should be the other way around.” Kaitleen fell to be silent as her gaze still lingered over the letters. She could smell the anxiety mixed into this, but that did not make her pity Alexander, not at all. Instead of studying it further, she pushed the letter back to her maker, to do as he pleases.

“You should burn it,” offered she after a hot minute with a soft tilt of her head. “As for Alexander himself—, I don’t want to seem too invasive when I say this, but perhaps you were too soft with him. He doesn’t seem to understand the importance of family—” she got stuck mid sentence, tongue going through the top line of her teeth. Her youngest sibling reminded her of her very first progeny, a progeny who willingly jumped in front of the rising sun, leaving Kaitleen alone, and with a broken heart. “I’d say, since he is going to die out there anyway— perhaps will attack some hunters out of thirst and they are going to stake him— one of your options would be breaking the bond and cutting him out of the clan. To prevent the fall of our reputation, and the fact that we are going to have to deal with the council if that happens. If he wants to be a big boy, let him. He is the first of us all to do anything like that to you. Make it a lesson.”

“I certainly would not say no to a drink,” the elder admitted to his progeny. He rolled his neck, cracking the stiff vertebrae with an unsatisfied expression. “I think, I think I am very tired,” he said, the words pulsing forth without context. He offered a brief smile, as though trying to offer some reassurance, but of what he was not sure. 

And then he realized, very quickly, it was an unnecessary action. With his eldest progeny—any of his progenies—there was hardly any point in masking himself with trivialities, like the false turn of the corners of his mouth. It left just as soon as it came. “I am unsure of what else to say, except that I think I am tired of chasing. I am tired of pursuit.” He spoke from the pit of his heart, words flowing in a natural course akin to that of a river, pulsing water down in a rapid rush.

Kaitleen swiftly got on her feet and opening a bar grabbed a glass turning it between her fingers before looking back at her maker. She did not answer with the same smile he offered, perhaps of the heavy feeling at the top of her chest. Instead she just filled the glass and went back to him, taking a seat on the arm of the chair and handing him the drink. “You are not obligated to,” she shrugged, a light gesture of her shoulders. “You can only chase a butterfly for so long,” mused she, looking through the window rather than at her father, “But he’s not an insect, not a wild animal, and you are not a hound. His statement does not make any sense, and all he is doing is victimizing himself.” Turning the bold gaze to Marcus Kaitleen did not blink. The words were a bit too harsh, perhaps, but his well-being was her priority. “This is not healthy, portraying you as a predator. You’ve been chasing for far too long, I believe it is time for you to stop.”

“You’d actually be surprised by how often I hear that.  I also hear, ‘this food is garbage!’  To which I reply, ‘try the beer.’  Trust me, this food is better when you’re drunk.  So spread that around.  Since you’re not…eating.”

“Doubt that. Just a little of silver hair spray, and you’re good to go. But I will— maybe— if at least the beer is good.”

“Pub n’ Grub!  The pub is the drinking and the grub is the eating.”  He grinned at the blond as she walked in.  She reminded him of Octavia, and that was always a good thing.

“Well, here it is.  Newly formed and founded by three time…or is it two time…pub owner!  Welcome, welcome welcome.”

“Something tells me you would have more luck turning this into a Santa’s castle. You don’t even need Prozac.”

“Neither, actually.. I just often make my business to check newly opened businesses.”

“Hello, Kaitleen. Ah, I do hope this is not an inconvenience,” Marcus voiced, his overly polite tone pervading through his quiet discomfort. He closed the office door behind him and crossed the room before taking a seat at the impressive, and undoubtedly expensive desk. “I am.. unsure of who else to approach in this matter at this moment, and even now, being near you, I can feel some semblance comfort.”

“It is very welcomed,” he said, his jaw clenching as though in anger, but the sudden grinding of his teeth was merely a movement to relax the tightening within his throat.

Her ears were already perked with his steps, and with every and each one of them she grew more tense, that mostly building up in her shoulders, and once he entered.. Kaitleen visibly relaxed, her posture gaining a calmer appearance. “Hello,” she spoke, blinking slowly, unsure what should she say. Marcus acted overly official, and it set her off a little, crystalline gaze still not leaving her maker. “Is there any way I could help you?” Beginning almost as seriously as did he, she shook her head quickly before speaking again. ”A drink?”

“Fuck.” Scar said falling on her ass. She didn’t even realize she could be this clumsy but the vampire had forgotten that their was ice. “Please tell me no one saw that.”  @kai-leventis

Carefully, she tip toed around the ice, trying not to slip herself because of her laughter, and took her sister by her shoulders, raising her up gently. “Are you okay?..” Kaitleen went silent, cleaning the back of her coat and her jeans. “..Don’t freak out, but I think you ripped your pants. Unless your underwear is supposed to be showing.”

“I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Oz muffled under his breath as he approached her office door. This was a stupid idea. Stupid because he was giving in and doing something he was told to do. The only reason was the whole reason for quitting Lazarus was hanging above his head if he didn’t. 

Oz gave a knock before opening, trying his best to swallow his pride. It was a feeling very foreign to him. “Can we have a minute?”

She was about to leave, picking her things for the day, and dropping a coat onto her shoulders, arms finding their place quickly. But then the voice, and those steps, and the knock.. Well, at least Drake’s nanny kept his promise. Turning to him she raised a brow and let the pause sink in before she spoke again. “Yes?”

      Her skin reddened, blistered, and charred beneath the relentless break of dawn. Zyanya felt each second as if it were an eternity of torture, but it was not the sun that did the most severe harm, it was the condemnation of her own. Of Kai.  She writhed in agony, physical and soul deep, the sound of her cries more animal like than human. Nothing compared to the feeling, not the years she spent tortured and caged against her will, away from her kin, not the sickness that rampaged through her body when she was still human. It was pure despair and desperation beyond measure. She was certain these were the last feelings she would ever have before she was nothing but ash to be vacuumed up at Kai’s convenience, but then something miraculous happened.

     Mercy came in the form of a thick curtain draped over her as her maker gathered her up, charred skin and all and delivered her away from harm. Each movement sent fresh waves of nausea inducing pain through her body, but there was still relief. She clung to Kai like a babe to its mother, whimpers with each jolt of a step quieted and muffled beneath the curtain. The only coherent words she could muster were rasped through a raw throat, Zyanya’s mantra before she let darkness overwhelm her.  “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay, it’s going to be okay.” She shushed the youngster, and her fingers gently brushed her hair, and she kissed her forehead. Kaitleen did not know what she would have done if the moon’s magic wouldn’t have passed away with the rising sun, if her youngest would be nothing but memories now; her brain refused to accept that situation, promising her own demise to follow after in that scenario. But Zyanya was safe, even if her body slumped week in Kaitleen’s arms, and the elder placed her ring back on, and told her secretary to fix up her office. It was agonizing to watch her like that, healing already, but there were still tears on her cheeks, watery proof of what she had to go through. 

Finally, holding her bridal style, Kai took the girl to the bedroom right next to the office, right behind the wall, and gently placed her on the soft bed. She had to rest, the wounds had to heal — and her heart, too. The ancient did not want to leave her, so she curled up next to the fragile figure, burying her face in her neck.

Her offer took the red headed hunter by surprise, something that was already rare as it is, but even more so allowing herself to work for a vampire. It was like Drew was willing to throw all her hard training away for this offer, and yet she found herself willing to do it. Though she knew full well that this woman could kill her in a second, and probably was not a saint, Drew knew the dynamics on the island were different, and she had to accept that. 

“Information was always my forte, it’s always more valuable than the head or heart of another,” She said softly, “I’ll do it, yes, as for the killing, I’m not opposed to it so long as there is good reason for their execution, which I assume there would be.”

“We try to avoid pointless killing,” she assured the other calmly. And it was the truth, even though sometimes a lot of people had to go, but it was for a reason. More or less. “But that is good to hear. I will give you my contacts,” spoke Kaitleen, quickly taking out a tiny white card, and holding it out to the huntress. The paper was more of an eggshell color, but she refused to call it anything but white. “Call anytime, or just come up to the office, they will let you through.”

     Zyanya had no working heart, but if she had one it would have been beating wildly against the cage of her ribs. She dared not move as Kai approached her, taking her hand up. The loss of the ring came with an unexpected amount of pain, the meaning with which the blonde carelessly stole that which made her most vulnerable not lost on her. She felt the air collapse from her lungs, panic seizing her almost immediately. Eyes widened, she stepped towards Kaitleen. “No. No– don’t!” 

     The anger was fading, the young progeny no longer heeding the call of the full moon. With a startling clarity, she felt all the love and devotion she felt towards her maker before unfurl and rush through her, and with it she knew true loss. That which made her whole– the love of Kaitleen Leventis– was taken from her, seemingly lost as the blonde opened the curtains to reveal the first light of dawn. There was nothing but pain as the light hit her face and Zyanya closed her eyes against it, letting out a cry as she brought her arms up. She felt made of nothing but fire as she was brought to her knees, sobbing out apologies to the ground.

And with the first rays reaching her face, hand holding the ring tight, the sheet of hatred slid off of her shoulders. It took a second for her to realize what she had done, what pain and danger she exposed Anya, her youngest progeny, to. And then a cry reached her ears, and she froze, for the first time in life; there were not many things that would make her figure stop like that, unable to move, but this situation was most certainly it. How her heart clenched, the pain of her daughter going through the elder too, and how a ball of scream got stuck in her throat without the possibility of moving or getting spit out. It choked her, and she just stood there, as her progeny burned. 

Suddenly she moved, with force unseen before, and the thick curtain was thrown on the small figure on the ground to cover her from the sun. Kaitleen jumped without thinking, and gathered her child into her own arms, breaking through her office’s doors, pressing Zyanya’s petite body to the cold wall. Still in shock she trembled, fingers wrapped around the younger vampire, glued to her. There were no words leaving her slightly open mouth. There probably were no words to say after a situation like this.

It wasn’t a surprise to the hunter that the blonde seemed to speak of the werewolf with a sense of familiarity. “I may have tried to kill him once or twice.” She admitted, not ashamed of it or anything, though obviously not succeeding either. The next comment from the other woman caused the ginger to raise her eyebrows, “Ah, not a lot at all, though I doubt you want to hear my stories of odd jobs for money. Why do you ask?”

“Work for me,” offered she with one brow going up slightly. “Money’s good, constant. Nobody is going to ask you kill on a command, but if you’d be interested in targets — well, why not. But other than that, I do like information, especially fresh one, and you do look like someone who likes to pick it.”

Drew was not afraid of the ancient, of course the woman could end the ginger’s life in a second if she wished, but she was not here for fights, Drew rarely admitted when she could be outmatched, but she certainly heard things about Kai, and admired her all the more. “The Verot pack, I think the last leader was Jeremy Markovich.” 

“And I’m not afraid to tell you I’m a hunter. I pose no threat to you, which is rare for me to admit, but I do hope to never fall on your bad side, as your reputation is admirable, even though you’re a vampire.”

“Oh, Jeremy!” She exclaimed, almost with a weird sense of enthusiasm, only later for her expression to falter as she sighed, gaze slipping away to the distance. “Oh..Jeremy..”  That one was dead, she knew it for sure, or thought she did — gossip through communities would go quick, and even for her it was sometimes hard catching a lie from a person who truly believes it. And this could have been easily a lie, but only if he hid. With the girl’s next words she finally focused on her, giving her a slight, but warm smile, gears turning in her head very obviously; one could almost hear it. “Say, being a hunter, it probably doesn’t pay a lot, does it?"
