Under her gaze was the last place he wanted to be, but there was a comfort in seeing her eyes. Not that he could read them, not as he was now. There was a sense to the curves of her face, like an ancient text. Dead and gone, but familiar. It made sense to him but it brought him no good will. He offered a quick, sheepish grin at her comment about Caroline. Well, both of the comments that pertained to the blonde. âI can handle midnight,â he added offhandedly, in a poor attempt to sound playful. It only spoke of his very real concerns about Bonnieâs curfew. It had been so long since they hadnât spent every waking moment with one another, that it almost felt unnatural to have her out of his sight. It was good for them, though, and he was happy she was out with a friend⌠It just drove him a little stir crazy. Snapping back to reality, it took him a moment to process (and ultimately understand) Elenaâs question. His lips part, about to answer, but it took him an additional second before he made out, âNo. Nothing.â It wasnât that he was oblivious to the implications. He simply didnât know how to, or if he should, proceed. It left him frozen in place, looking at the human almost.. expectantly.
âI think you can too.â She could tell he was worried for her best friend, and she knew there was little she could do to help calm his nerves, so she chose to steer clear of the subject unless he brought it up again. With his answer came a new set of questions flowing through her mind, and more butterflies in her stomach as she built up the courage to suggest they make some plans. âWell, if you wanted to, we could get something to eat at the grill? My treat.â She knew her offer might be rejected, and she prepared herself for that. Even though itâd been months since sheâd even talked to her husband, it still might have been too soon, and she couldnât blame him if he felt that way. âI know you always thought their fries were a little soggy, but for the most part the food is pretty good overall.â She offered him a smile, keeping her words soft and gentle, not wanting to force him into doing anything he didnât want. Especially with Bonnie out of the house, especially with the two of them apart, it would have made sense if he wanted to stay in and wait on her instead. âMight help get your mind off things for a little bit.â
