the problem i have w the way ppl in the arcane fandom hate caitlyn is that. i would absolutely 100% get it if she was the only character in the show to do fucked up things and the fandom hated her. like if everybody else in the series is super wholesome and perfect and there’s one character who commits police brutality and war crimes and realizes she’s fucked up before she decides to change BUT to the viewers it’s too late bc wow, everyone else is normal and then there’s this crazy motherfucker, i’d get it.

but that’s not the point of arcane at all. there’s no inherently 'good' or 'bad' character. obviously there’s the 'good' ones; zaun, who’ve been oppressed for years and all the shit they do they do it bc they want their freedom, and the 'bad' one; piltover, who’ve been oppressing zaun and they don’t plan on changing that. the point of the series is to show how that affects every character individually; how they’re trying to fight against the oppression / maintain it. (which was kinda lost at the end of season two when the focus on the upcoming civil war was given up on to zero on viktor-jesus but that’s another thing)

there’s no morally indiscutable character in arcane (not even ekko) bc every single one of them have done shady stuff for themselves or their loved ones. if you think logically, everybody in the council is an asshole, jayce (killed an infant and head of the enforcers) is an asshole, viktor (became jesus and wanted to commit ethnic cleansing lol) is an asshole, vander (negotiated w enforcers) is an assholes, silco (gave drugs to children and murdered ppl on both sides AND negotiated w enforcers etc) is an asshole, sevika (worked for silco so all of the above and probably did the killing) is an asshole, jinx (terrorist lol) is an asshole, ekko (befriended head of the council rat guy who’s been oppressing his ppl) is an asshole, vi (worked for the enforcers and committed police brutality) is an asshole, etc.

except it does not work like that, and the fandom’s willing to acknowledge that it doesn’t work like that and that every mistake the characters made didn’t define who they ultimately were as a person. until it’s the asian women.

like omg. caitlyn is one of the characters who tried to undo her mistakes (which like, half of the time we’re orchestrated by ambessa anyway) and fix what she’s done the most yet she’s the most hated character in the fandom. and it’s not like ppl are ever letting it go, scroll on arcane twt for five seconds and the stupid discourse is still going. this show had the potential to be so interesting and yet it was given to the most media illiterate group of ppl.

One time a friend told me that if she wanted to have a chill night she would come to me and ask for tea and a book to read. I didn’t like tea at the time, but I always made sure my cupboards had them in case she needed a quiet night. One time I told my boss that I loved oranges, but couldn’t peel them because of my nails. For a year he made sure to peel me one at least once a week. Once my friends gave me a made up superlative of “most likely to have a pen they could borrow” and ever since I’ve made sure I always carry a pen with me. A long time ago, my high school librarian told me that no one would care what my grade in my sophomore chemistry class was if I’m bringing them doughnuts and asking them about their day.

Sometimes friendship is about carrying pens and peeling oranges. But the point is, surrounding yourself with people who you want to do the little things for. The point of it all is bringing in the doughnuts because you’ve found the people who deserve the doughnuts.

And I’m so fucking lucky, and I don’t always say it or even think it. Because I have friends who send me letters and who told me when the cafeteria at work had chopped tomatoes and who want to watch Scream with me and it just hits me sometimes that this world can do the ugliest things to people, but as long as I still have a friend who will point out dogs on the sidewalks to me then I have something amazing to live for. And as long as I have pals who I want to make peppermint bark for, then I have a reason to keep pushing this world to be better.
