What advice can you give about writing dark and messed up characters like Kol?

sorry this is so late! the only real advice I’ve got is do not downplay your characters darkness for anyone elses benefit. don’t do it. do not do it. not even if they’re your favourite person in the world, not for a your OTP, don’t do it because someone else doesn’t like it. do not censor your fucked up, dark, screwed up, messy character because of a ship, a plot, a thread, a person, another character or what the hell ever. you will regret it. surrender to the fucked upness that is your dark as fuck character my friend, every twisted thought, every crazy, morally corrupt action, every sadistic, abusive, thing that this character wants to do, just do it.

antagonist, anti-hero and villain characters are always going to push boundaries, they’re always going to do things that are going to make some people uncomfortable, that are going to make YOU uncomfortable, it’s what they do, it’s who they are!!

Anyone as uncomfortable with what’s been reveal about the new Heretic Beau based on the descriptions and promos? I feel like it’s another case of the black person subservient to a white person (Beau to Lily Salvatore.) And then he’s literally mute. I don’t know, but the implications just doesn’t sit well with me.
