The Curse of Bohemia: Her Crown
Context for above images: Reinhard Heydrich visits St. Vistus cathedral to look upon the crown of Bohemia. In the middle image, he is given the seven keys to open the chamber it's held in. ────── History of the Crown and Its Bearer
Sapphire, rublithe, and pearls–all of these beautiful gems make up the crown of Bohemia. Even though the Kingdom of Bohemia does not exist today, these jewels remain as a reminder of western Czhecian history. Also known as the Crown of Saint Wenceslas, it is the fourth oldest survivng crown in the world. Commissioned in 1346, the crown was specifically made for the coronation of Charles IV–also known as Charles of Luxembourg and Holy Roman Emperor.
Charles IV, born Wenceslas, was arguably one the greatest kings of Bohemia. His reign lasted 32 years. After his coronation, Charles implemented the law of succession in Prague–which established primogeniture, however if there were no remaining male successors, the crown would go to the most fit daughter.
The final king to bear this crown was Ferdinand V in 1836, who unlike Charles IV was unfit to rule. Ferdinand was titled Emperor of Austria–but also as king of Croatia, Hungary, Bohemia, and Lombardy-Venetia. He had a short reign of only 13 years before his abdication.
The Curse and Legend
Behind the history and stunning jewels this crown bears, there is a dark legend–derived from its religious origins. The legend of the Crown of Wenceslas is rumoured to punish those who are unfit to wear the crown; any usurper who coronates himself and is not of Bohemian royalty is cursed to die. Those who believe the legend say that the crown is protected by Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech state.
Before becoming a saint, Wenceslas was the duke of Bohemia. He is also known as Václav the Good for his princely nature and good deeds as king. In either 935 or 929 (it is unclear), Wenceslas was assassinated by his younger brother, Boleslav and multiple noble conspirators who wished to take control for themselves.
After his death, his cult following wrote about 4 biographies about him. Following these writings, only in a few decades, Wenceslas was made into a saint and martyr. His assassination held incredible influence over the middle ages and sprouted the idea of rex justus–a good king with piety and a kind heart.
A quote from the Cosmas of Prague on Wenceslas I: “…rising every night from his noble bed, with bare feet and only one chamberlain, he went around to God’s churches and gave alms generously to widows, orphans, those in prison and afflicted by every difficulty, so much so, that he was considered, not a prince but the father of all the wretched.”
The Reichsprotoker
Flash forward about 567 years, Reinhard Heydrich became the Reichsprotoker of Bohemia and Moravia in September of 1941. He visited Prague and saw the real crown of Wenceslas for himself. Only a year later, Heydrich would be assassinated by Czhecian rebels.
It is rumoured that Heydrich wore the crown for himself–however no actual record of this has been discovered. Once the crown was placed upon Heydrich’s head, the crown marked him for death.

How to consolidate power: a guide by the SS
this is kind of a part 2 to the development of the SA, but not really, since i never actually spoke about uniforms. i'll be posting an actual pt. 2 to my first post about the history of uniforms later on! anyways, enjoy the information i yapped about in here! ──────
The SS (Schutzstaffel) was established on April 4th, 1925–an offshoot of the dominant SA (at the time) for the first nine years after its conception. The SA had been the largest wing under the NSDAP, so large that the Führer himself started to fear the power of the SA under Röhm’s leadership. More than three million people were part of the SA and it only continued to grow steadily through the late 30s. Military leaders of the reichswehr, the old German army before the wehrmacht, believed that the SA wanted to consume the reichswehr into the SA and totally annul it’s official standing in the newly NSDAP controlled Germany.
The SA was often thought of as the more radical wing of the NSDAP in the 1930s. Most of its members were unemployed or low-working class citizens who spearheaded the national socialist “revolution” after Germany’s defeat in WWI. It was estimated by Rudolf Diels, the first Gestapo captain, Many of these lower-class workers were probable communists, reaching upwards of 70% percent. The mobilization of the deconstruction of the reichswehr by Röhm had slowly started to take effect, as he considered the old military as a “training-school” for young Germans rather than a true army. In the eyes of many high-ranking NSDAP officers, such as Himmler and Heydrich, Röhm was an economic socialist. The earliest backers of the NSDAP were German magnates and capitalists–the upcoming, power-hungry political party did not want to lose popularity with it’s earliest and important allies.
The relationship between the Führer and Röhm was not a bad one at first; despite Röhm having an array of “skeletons” in his closet. The two men had been each other’s allies, Röhm had specifically supported the Führer in his endeavors to seize power from the crumbling, post WWI German state. As doubt and conflict continued to swirl between the SA and SS, Himmler decided to take action against Röhm, behind the Führer's back.
The plan that Himmler devised was launched and spearheaded by Heydrich, a willing accomplice in Himmler’s plan to dispose of Röhm for good. Heydrich was ordered to write up a falsified case against Röhm, detailing that he was involved in a French plan to overthrow the Führer's power in Germany and consolidate himself as leader of the NSDAP. This scheme cemented the Führer's doubt in Röhm, which promptly led to his arrest.
This removal of high-ranking SA officers came to be known as the Night of the Long Knives, or Nacht der langen Messer. During this night, over an estimated 200 SA officers were captured and arrested, including Röhm himself. Many members of the SA were killed shortly after capture. However, Röhm did not share a similar fate. The Führer pardoned Röhm of his crimes against the NSDAP and forgave him for his “revolutionary ideals.”
Himmler and Heydrich, the two men responsible for kickstarting the purge of the SA vehemently disagreed with the Führer's decision and after much deliberation the Führer agreed. Röhm was given one option, to kill himself. After refusing to do so, he was shot by two SS officers.
The “atrocities” of the Night of the Long Knives shook many German citizens, considering the removal to be almost barbaric. However, Goebbels justified the Führer’s actions by revealing some of Röhm’s skeletons. During a time when homosexuality was frowned upon by most, it was revealed to the public that Röhm was in fact, a homosexual. Interestingly enough, many officers knew of his tendencies and did not bat an eye, save for until he became a problem.

a brief introduction on the development of SA uniforms and it's early history (part 1, the sa)
i put some actual time and effort into writing this, so enjoy some actual good grammar! ill post part 2 when i have the chance
────────── The NSDAP was a complex and often confusing political structure due to the intertwining and off-shooting parallel hierarchies. More often than not, many casual historians tend to overlook or misinterpret the structure of the NSDAP–including the uniforms used. The image of the average NSDAP member is dressed in all black, wearing a bright-red armband; however, this could not be further from the truth. Each offshoot, including the SS and SA, had their own distinct, often convoluted ranking, and coloring system. DEVELOPMENT OF THE SA
Prior to the development of an official ranking system, the SA–simply known as the Brownshirts (Braunhemden)–were put in place to protect NSDAP rallies. The striking brown color of the SA’s uniforms were never symbolic; unlike the red, black and white colors of the official Nazi party flag. Due to the access to military surplus at the time, the SA found it practical to use. For a developing political party in the 1920’s, they wanted anything they could get. Furthermore, these brown colored uniforms were originally intended for colonial German forces in East Africa, then later utilized by the SA in its earliest times due to the Schill Sportversand becoming the party’s major supplier during its development in the early to late 1920s. The standardization of overall SA (Sturmabteilung) uniforms took place in 1933, under the wing of Dr. Robert Ley. Ley was a high-ranking official–to be specific, a member of the Reichsleiter. The Reichsleiter was the second highest rank in the NSDAP; for further reference, prominent officers within this commanding group were Goebbels, Himmler, and Röhm. When Ley standardized the SA uniforms, many members and political leaders often referred to his regulations as “Ley’s fairy-tales”. The books were officially known as Organisationsbuch der NSDAP and they were published between 1936-1943.
