She slowly nodded.
“Sure. It could be fun. Are you not going? You were so excited as a child to attend,” Mikoto told him with a nod.
“And then there’s the whole police thing. I always was more of a.. detective.” Just like in the books she read.
How does one begin to explain that his sense of 'belonging' in the clan was intrinsically tied to Itachi, and with his demise and what they'd collectively gone through, he saw little reason to hold any actual pride in his surname? There was no 'clan' anymore... not in the sense the rest of the village saw or expected. Just him, his wife and daughter, and his Mother.
The mention of his childhood makes his expression falter, though he quickly tries to school it back to some form of control. Sasuke as a child and Sasuke now were two different people, and though he knows his Mother is reminding him to help, it pushes against a barrier inside of him that's still tightly locked.
"Other villagers run the police force." Somehow, that's the only thing he can think to say, completely avoiding the topic of him joining them at the festival or not.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s just us. There’s.. the fire festival. That’s..” something. She wasn’t really involved in the clan itself for one reason or another, even if she was the clan head for decades.
“Festivals are nice. Though have to wait until next year for it.” A small pause. “What did you think I was referring to?”
Sasuke's shoulders drop lightly in relief. He thought, that... that...
"Nothing. I'm sure Sakura would be happy to go with you."
Right in front of the coffee!
“What.”
Ahe looked at him innocently.
”i don’t really care too much but there are some things I’d like to keep alive here.”
"Mother... it's just... us." What is there to keep alive...? He's not letting Sarada become involved, either.
”Who wants to help secure the Uchiha bloodline?”
it means exactly what one thinks.
not that she entirely cares about said bloodline, but it would be nice, considering.
Right infront of his coffee??
”I’m always saying things,” Mikoto grumbled. “I just saw it this morning!” She carefully untangled his arm from hers.
He reaches for it again, gripping a tad more firmly.
"Mother, come on." Don't make this difficult...
”But im not tired? Why should I go to bed?”
"You're saying things again." Weird things. He's already slipping an arm under hers to lead her to bed.
”The Shadow Man is real,” she grumbled.
"Sure Mother, let's get you to bed."
Mikoto had a bowl of tomato’s beside her. She took a decent sized one and took a bite out a tomato like an apple. She’s a bit hungry so this is what she gravitated towards. But the only problem was swallowing. There’s always a hesitance when she was to, and she grimaced when she does. Yet the swallowing she heard wasn’t too bad.
She takes another bite.
She was suppose to make something with these tomato’s but she might end up eating them if no one stops her.
He wants one...
"I'm not soft," comes the immediate response. He's not. Or at least, he's not supposed to be. But of course he would know himself better than anyone.
The hand at the back of his neck, though, surprises him; he has to will himself from jumping a little, instinctually. He knows Sasuke does not mean any harm in this touch, it's just... people don't touch him there unless they're trying to kill him. But once he's over initially being startled, the warm hand is... nice. Comforting, secure. Sasuke's shoulders sag slightly, releasing tension he didn't know was in them. He lets out a shaky breath, and leans more fully against the other, almost snuggling his face against Sasuke. Yeah--definitely not soft. Nope.
Sasuke hums playfully, continuing to stroke the back of his neck, hitting just the right spot to send a little shiver through him. It's gotta be pretty sweet, isn't it? To be touch starved and have that alleviated by someone who knows all your spots.

Sasuke snorts, the sarcasm lose on his younger counterpart. Ah, well. He shakes his head gently, and then goes in to ruffle his hair. Ah, his used to stick up like that..
Dark eyes follow the hand that's reaching towards him. When it descends into his hair, Sasuke... will allow it. With narrowed eyes that soften upon actually feeling the affectionate touch, which is quite nice for someone who hasn't felt such a thing for.... years... And it's himself, in a way, so it's safe to do this next thing he does, which is to close the remaining space between the two of them, and just casually lean against the other's side. Sasuke won't tell a soul, he knows, of this weakness.
"You're getting soft." He teases, lightly, bringing his hand to the back of the other's neck. Of course, they've always been soft, just had to hide it under layers of defense.
Sasuke frowned, not particularly enjoying this sight before him. It was confusing and he was almost sure he was placed under influence of genjutsu.
" ... " He stared prolonged at his mirror image, unsure if he should even acknowledge it lest he incur some sort of curse, wake up from a bad dream, or end up advancing his mental degradation.

Not genjutsu.
He's tested...with four different methods. Seems his 'copy' also tested, which makes this even more confusing. He felt that familiar spike of chakra too- it feels genuine.
Either advancements had been made in transformation technology under his nose, or somehow, he'd found a genuine copy of himself.
So... he begins to circle the other.
Itachi's aware of the risks. With the way he was shaking, it was a little alarming. He doesn't want his illness to come back, and he doesn't want to get in any trouble that'll make Sasuke worry more than he already does. Which is... a lot.
When Sasuke stands, Itachi's eyes follow him. The thanks makes him smile slightly, as does the nose against his forehead. But he tilts his head up, searching for more. "Thank you," he says softly. He reaches up a hand, tracing along Sasuke's collar, before brushing fingertips along his jaw. Just gentle touches, as he looked up at him.
How dare he... asking for affection like this when he goes and does things to hurt himself. Sasuke's supposed to be mad at him. A part of him still is.
Nonetheless, Sasuke gives in, tilting his head down until he meets Itachi's lips with his own in a soft kiss. He tastes the traces of dinner.
Itachi exhales softly. "Yeah," he says, beginning to draw back his hand, as it's not accepted. He doesn't know Sasuke intends to take it as soon as Itachi's acknowledged what he said. "I thought it'd be okay to wait, but... you're right. I'll tell you in the future."
It was true, he could see how weak he had gotten waiting.
He could go on. If Itachi faints because he's too hungry, he could hit something and get injured. His illness could spike again, sending him to the hospital.
Or worse...
Sasuke sighs tersely, standing up and coming around to fetch Itachi's plate.
"Thank you." He leans down to nose against Itachi's forehead.
Itachi relaxes when Sasuke sits down across from, though the sigh makes him frown slightly.
"You didn't seem hungry, and I didn't want to pressure you into making food just for me," he explains softly. He doesn't want to be a burden to Sasuke, just because he's a terrible cook. He reaches out a hand, offered across the table.
"That's stupid."
He doesn't want to be mean to Itachi on purpose, but-- that's just it. That's such a stupid train of thought.
"You need to eat. I don't care if it's at a different time than anyone else." Sasuke wants to take the hand, he really does, but...
He waits for Itachi to acknowledge what he said, first. There's no point in this if Itachi's going to keep acting like an injured cat, off to die alone in a corner where no one knows anything is wrong.
"You're going to tell me when you're hungry."
Itachi winces. But he doesn't want to argue more than this, so he picks up the chopsticks rather shakily and begins to eat.
Mmm, it's good. Chicken and rice.
He nearly scarfs the whole thing down, glancing up at Sasuke every so often until it's down. Chopsticks placed on the near-empty plate (there are a few kernels of rice left), he looks up for... approval? For Sasuke to sit? Something.
Good... he can relax now.
Once Itachi's about halfway through, Sasuke sits down across from him, sighing gently.
"Why didn't you tell me you were hungry earlier." He asks, frowning.
Ahh, it smells so good. His stomach does a lot more growling, and he feels a lot weaker in those fifteen minutes.
Despite that, when Sasuke sets down the food, Itachi doesn't immediately go to eat it. He looks up at Sasuke, a small smile on his face. "Won't you join me?" he asks, shaking fingers playing with the chopsticks.
He knows this might get him in trouble, but he wants Sasuke to sit with him!
"Eat."
