I was wondering why this comic was bothering so much, then I looked at nightmare really close.

Does the mushroom on his head hurt? Or like does the mushrooms do more than just consuming his memories?

The mushrooms doesn't hurt him! Atleast majority of the time.

Often times Cane will feel an immense flood of emotions, it could be overwhelming sometimes that his mushrooms actually react to it. It will grow rapidly in minutes if it's too much for Cane to handle, and when it grows too fast it just hurts.

Cane could be so angry his mushrooms will grow rapidly, he could be so sad it's grows fast, he's excited? Oh well boy.

The shroom is a big part of Cane, it's part of his brain. Something the shrooms can't handle will just react by growing because they don't know how to process it like a normal brain.

Though most of the time he just tries to ignore it and go on like it's not happening, he never liked the feeling. So he just kinda pretends to make himself feel better. And the longer he does it, the more he believes it doesn't hurt.

(yes Cane does eat the mushrooms, yes he may be consuming his own but like, uh idk he's not a cannibal okay)
