「Ghibli wo Utau Vol.#2」 Trailer

A trailer for "Ghibli wo Utau Vol.# 2," (a tribute album to Studio Ghibli music produced by Takebe Satoshi), has finally been released! It contains a snippet of Kalafina's track "Arrietty's Song" so be sure to check it out!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what we are hearing so far (their voices are blending super well together - flawless harmonies😍) although I stand by my opinion that I am not a particularly huge fan of the song choice itself (I am happy to be proven wrong by the full version and I have a feeling it will quickly start growing on me). The Celtic vibe and fairytale-like whimsical nature of the song are obviously a perfect match for Kalafina (no doubt about that) but I currently can't imagine how it will properly bring out the charms of their vocals with the way the original song is arranged. I don't mean to sound too critical because I honestly love the little snippet and I am beyond grateful we are getting this new release from them. And Kalafina's version already sounds better to me than the original so that's a huge win!

Oh, my goodness. TLDR: I've reclaimed access to my account 🥳

I got logged out by Tumblr, forgotten my password and — somewhat disenchanted with fhána and the Kalafina girls' solo careers — didn't go want to go through the trouble of trying to reset my password with my old email address. So I simply let it slide and became a lurker once again...

Obviously, there's been major developments since. I've found myself wanting to express my support and opinions more than I ever really have regarding Kalafina and fictionjunction.

Last year, I went to Kuala Lumpur for one of the last shows of the Hikaru + Keiko x fictionjunction era. Since I'll be in Japan for at least the next couple of years, I will have the opportunity to attend more live performances! Very excited about this.

I do have to apologise for my absence the past few years, but I hope to make it up to existing and new members of the community here. I've got more of an ability to contribute at this point in my life, as well as with what's happened in the last couple of years.

I doubt many people, if any, will see this post. But as I start being more active, I hope that can change! Thank you for having me back (also, shout out to Tumblr for my old account 😭). Stay tuned...!

Kalafina Singing Analysis

I have been watching a lot of Kalafina live recently, and I thought it would be fun to analyse how the girls sing, and how their abilities have changed throughout the years of them being in Kalafina. I will be covering each of the girls (in order of Wakana, Keiko and Hikaru). I would love any constructive criticism or any other points. 

Note: I am not a professional singer or a singing teacher. I just thought it would be interesting for analyse each of Kalafina’s members singing techniques, the good and the bad, with what knowledge I do have about singing. I have been singing for 7 years, been in many choirs both in school and out. I have been taught by different singing teachers. I am also not perfect, I have many flaws in my singing as well, but myself pointing flaws out in the girls does not mean that I am saying that I am any better. 

In order to clarify for later parts:

For the voice range information, I have recorded instances of all the girls singing not just in Kalafina Songs, but in FictionJunction songs and lives, as well as covers on TV, Kalafina Club Openings, and Wakana’s Solo Album With that, let’s get started.

Some updates + corrections:

Wakana: Definitely a soprano. Her range is also not mezzo-soprano and is in fact very typical of a soprano singer (except for the lower notes). Would consider Wakana a light lyric soprano. 

Vocal Range: D2 - G#5

Keiko: Definitely a contralto. Recently she has made some mistakes in pitch and in tone. For example, in ‘Be Yourself’ (I’m home live) she is flat for most of the head voice notes in the first section and shouty for the rest of the higher chest notes. She improves throughout the rest of the live. Her head voice is not always consistent.

Vocal Range: C3 - F#5

Hikaru: Definitely a mezzo-soprano. A better analysis on her strained voice. Hikaru hasn’t seemed to develop a mixed voice. I think she tried to use her chest voice for everything (except falsetto) and after too much reliance on nasal placement it caused damage to her voice. Hikaru hasn’t developed a mixed voice at all really and her chest voice is inconsistent. Sometimes F4 and G4 sound supported and sometimes they don’t. She mostly just pushes out every chest note from F4 to C5 which will cause even more damage to her voice if it isn’t sorted. Her low voice is still super gorgeous. 

Vocal Range: C#3 - F#5

Unfortunately, there isn’t that much Kalafina-content available in English.

Obviously I try my best to provide as many translations and summaries as possible but I can only do so much...Check out the tags #my-translations and #summary to find all the juicy stuff.

There is also a fansub project courtesy of CPM members but I think that’s pretty much dead.

Then there are some videos that were intended for an international audience like their TGU interview or their J-Melo appearance so those came with subtitles. YAY for that.

Last but not least, just enter Kalafina Interview English Subtitles on YouTube and you will find a few videos there as well (mostly footage from their overseas activities - nothing too exciting).

As for ARIA and Hikaru’s voice having changed...Well, there’s no easy answer for that...[Edit: This got a little out of hand, sorry]

If you listen closely to the oldest and newest live version of ARIA floating around, you will quickly notice that they sound quite different. Hikaru’s vocals used to sound very youthful, crisp and clear in the studio version and early live renditions.

However, throughout the years her voice has undergone some changes. Some of these changes can be attributed to her voice maturing (after all, she was very young when ARIA was first released - fun fact: biologically, the voice isn’t considered fully mature until your mid/late 20s to early 30s). Other changes are probably the result of overuse/misuse and damage (she has not really shared any information on that but it is quite likely - same goes for Wakana btw and even Keiko tbh).

Now this has never been confirmed but she seems to no longer be able to comfortably produce those particular crisp high notes she used for the original version. And hey, that’s totally fine. Voices change. That’s how life works. No song will ever sound the same if it’s performed live for years and years. And really, that’s the beauty of live music.

You can kinda hear her “struggling” in some performances [e.g. 5th Anniversary Live (2013) | THE BEST Red Day Live (2015)] or as I like to call it, she was simply trying to figure out different/new ways of singing the song while her voice was undergoing changes. Around 2017 she presumably found a style she was comfortable and happy with and that required a few adjustments to the song itself (including a slight key change).

But that’s not all there is to the story. Hikaru has talked extensively about how it was also a conscious choice to mix-up ARIA a bit. Her interpretation of the song has changed significantly as she has gotten older. When she first sung it, she was young and green behind the ears, her only concern was to deliver a technically flawless performance (which she did!). Many years later and a decade of experiences under her belt, the song has so much more weight to it. This is heavily reflected in her newer renditions. There is more expression, more depth, more edge, the song feels “lived in” and “raw” if you know what I mean. Hikaru has truly made ARIA her own. She has obviously been digging deeper and adding a few new layers to the song. This is why I will gladly take the "supposedly flawed” 10th Anniversary performance over any of the old pitch perfect versions of the song. And this is also why I would like to tell everyone who shits on Hikaru for singing ARIA differently to go fuck themselves because you have absolutely no right to do that! Yes, we can all acknowledge that she has struggled through a few performances in the past, yes, we can also acknowledge that some notes have been and are still obviously off. But do not act like an entitled bitch that has any rights to the song. This is Hikaru’s song and she can sing it however she wants. PERIOD. I have seen people complain about the new version sounding “off/wrong” and the old versions being the “only true” renditions and if Hikaru is not able to sing it the exact same way she used to then she is better off not singing it at all. I mean, what the hell? Are you serious??!! The nerve some people have!! Why would she stop singing a song she holds dear to her heart just because your oh so delicate ears cannot handle change??! Just go listen to the old version and shut up. Or move on and find a new singer to follow, preferably someone who uses auto-tune and lip-sync because this way you can rest assured that everything will always sound the same. RANT OVER.

Honestly, I’ve preferred the 10th anni version of ARIA ever since the blu-ray was released! Not sure what people find more appealing in the older versions tbh...

Phew, that’s actually a tricky question because there are so many things to consider but I will try to do my best!(ง’̀-‘́)ง

Since I love “seventh heaven” and “Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku” so much I have decided to rank every single official audio/video version of those two songs. I am not really ranking these based on technical aspects (at least not entirely) because I am not knowledgable enough in that regard. It’s more of a gut feeling XD HIGHLY subjective. I don’t think a single person in this fandom would have the same ranking as me. I would be curious to see other rankings though. So everyone, feel free to share your personal rankings! Anyways, let’s get to it! 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

seventh heaven

“seventh heaven” is one of my favourite Kala-songs but to be honest, I didn’t properly fall in love with it until 2015. Not sure why it took me so long, I guess the song takes some time to grow on people because it’s rather slow and inconspicuous. XD We actually have a lot of official audio/video footage even though I always considered this to be one of their “rarely performed” songs.

Kalafina LIVE TOUR 2015~2016 “far on the water” : I am biased. I was there in the second row. It was honestly a great experience. The vibe was just so special, I don’t know how to explain it. The girls were in a great mood and their vocals were also pretty on point.

Kalafina 5th Anniversary LIVE SELECTION: Slightly toned down compared to the other versions but overall the harmonies are quite amazing in this rendtion from their Closed Premium Live (audio only).

Kalafina LIVE THE BEST 2015 "Blue Day": Not sure what it is about this version but this was the first time the song really touched my heart. We all know that Hikaru was struggling a bit during the BEST lives but she did a well-enough job here, so did Wakana. Keiko’s vocals in “seventh heaven” are honestly always flawless.

TYPE-MOON Fes.: The very first time we got video footage of them performing "seventh heaven” so it’s special. Back then it didn’t leave a lasting impression on me but today I can look back on it and really appreciate this rendition.

Kalafina 8th Anniv. Live Album: A really nice acoustic rendition from their LIVE TOUR 2014 (audio only).

Alleluia Single ~2012 Christmas LIVE ver.~: Another acoustic rendition. Hikaru is a bit too loud for my taste here but aside from that it’s lovely too

~Lisani! LIVE-4 in January 2014~: Probably my least favourite version of the song. I don’t really like the acoustics in this one. And the mic-volumes seem to be a bit off. Wakana is too loud I think. 

Kimi ga Hikari ni Kaete Iku

We all know that this is my all-time favourite Kala-song. For most fans this is a “Keiko-song” and while I do LOVE her in the verses I have to admit that it has always been Wakana’s parts that touched my heart the most (especially in the acoustic ver.). I guess at the end of the day it’s a WaKei-song, both of them shine here (which is probably one of the main reasons why I love it so much)

~Yuki Kajiura Live vol.#3 footage~: So nostalgic, so good, they were still babies back then. This almost sounds like the studio version, pretty much flawless. Almost too flawless and sterile for my taste actually, I feel like there is a lot of studio magic happening here~ Oh well, who cares? It’s by far the best version.  

Kalafina 10th Anniversary LIVE 2018 at Nippon Budokan: Once again I am biased. Hearing this live at their 10th Anniversary concert was absolutely breathtaking and oh so special. I will admit that I prefer Keiko’s deeper singing but I don’t mind her cutesy voice either (because it’s her way of conveying more emotion which I appreciate). And yeah, Wakana’s voice has never been the same as it was back in the 2008 version but that doesn’t matter to me. She owns this song. PERIOD. (Note: Obviously, I was one of the people who voted for this song to be sung!) I would also like to point out that this is one of the few times where their harmonising at the end of the bridge doesn’t sound too cringey. Usually it does (or they are drowned out by some backing track).

Alleluia Single ~2012 Christmas LIVE ver.~: Keiko is ON POINT here. I realise that this is probably not Wakana’s best delivery but somehow I still love the way she sings here (there is just so much emotion conveyed in her voice).  Also, the arrangement here is absolutely beautiful. The strings in the final section always kill me combined with Wakana’s heartbreaking singing. I feel blessed because I got to hear Wakana sing a similar arrangement for orchestra during her symphony concert back in 2018.

Kalafina 5th Anniversary LIVE SELECTION: Even though this version is from 2009 it’s not actually that great. Not bad either but it doesn’t do much for me I rarely listen to it.

TYPE-MOON Fes.: I love the emotions in this one, in terms of Keiko’s parts this might be my favourite actually (which is why I would like to rank it higher) but Wakana’s vocals are quite shaky here.

Kalafina 5th Anniversary LIVE oblivious: Not my favourite because the sound of this broadcast wasn’t too great. It takes away from my enjoyment. But it’s definitely not a bad performance. Not a huge fan of Wakana’s delivery towards the end.

Hikari no Senritsu

Now we get to the really difficult part. It pains me to say this but I always skip “Hikari no Senritsu” during lives because I don’t really like the song all too much. That’s why I honestly cannot tell you which version is the best. Generally I do prefer their older live performances of it because in pretty much all the newer ones I am not a huge fan of Hikaru and Wakana’s vocals in the verses and chorus respectively.   

So I will just go with this super old performance here 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

Unlike “Hikari no Senritsu”, I REALLY love “storia”. Having said that, I still don’t enjoy a majority of its live performances (especially the ones they have done on various music shows). It’s one of their most frequently performed songs and supposedly a shining example of Kalafina’s harmonies but more often than not I find myself having trouble making out that infamous harmony. Hikaru’s vocals just stand out too much in some parts of the song (not in a good way though >_<).

I don’t want to go with another ancient performance (even though I will have to admit that I do like Hikaru’s vocals more in those) so I will choose this one here since I thoroughly enjoy it〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

Hello, thank you for replying! There are so many interesting seventh heaven and Kimi ga Hikari choices! I’m looking forward to get cracking and watch/listen to them all. I didn’t realise you don’t like Hikari no Senritsu all that much, but since it’s one of my favourites I had to listen to the version you suggested. The harmonies are so much more pronounced, I was surprised! I do tend to go for the more recent versions of all songs due to video quality, so I’m very familiar with the fotw and 10th anni live versions. I should really pay more attention to the audio only live releases. Thank you once again :D

Thoughts on 'Aki no Sakura' EP

Visuals:

I'm not a huge fan of the regular version cover, I like the limited edition a lot more. The filters and colour correction of the shots are really nice and creates a neat atmosphere. Wakana's outfit is... interesting. I wouldn't say that it's my thing, but it looks very comfortable and certainly fits the mood of the music video. Speaking of which...

Why that ratio? My guess is it's supposed to convey a sense of nostalgia, which it most certainly does. The PV itself is quite plain but it fits the song quite well. There are some beautiful shots of Wakana herself, but some shots longer for way too long.

Audio:

eve: I LOVE the orchestra sound. I was kinda hoping there'd be lyrics, but I still really like it as a short intro song, even though it doesn't really fit the tone of the rest of the EP. Wakana's singing isn't the best here, it's a bit honky and the falsetto is too breathy imo.

アキノサクラ (Aki no Sakura): I really like this song! At first I thought it was a bit boring, but it's really growing on me. The verses are my favourite, I really like the lyrics as well. The composition is very chill and uplifting as well, it's really a lovely piece. I really like Wakana's singing here for the most part, there are moments where her vibrato is a bit distracting, but the low notes are quite gorgeous. I love that Wakana going solo has enabled her to go beyond her usual range when she was singing Kalafina, her low notes are quite nice.

恋はいつも (Koi wa Itsumo): What a pleasant surprise! This song is so poppy and fun, Wakana's little 'baby baby' in the chorus is so cute. I particularly like the 'koi wa... itsumo' parts. Wakana's voice isn't super suited to these types of songs, but it's certainly better than other artists (Aimer's poppy songs really grind my gears, her voice is wayyyyy too tragic to sing those types of songs) Anyway, I didnt think I'd like this, but it's kinda stuck with me after a single listen.

オレンジ (Orange): I REALLY like this song. I had similar thoughts to this as Aki no Sakura at first, but I'm really liking the melody after a while. The second verse/bridge is gorgeous, it's very different from the rest of the song but it's a very welcome addition. The harmonica I'm not super sure about though... I might just have to get used to it. If there's anything I don't like about the song is the beginning instruments in the first chorus is very distracting, there's one that keeps going to the left and right side of audio (if you're wearing headphones).

夕焼け (Yuuyake): Very nice simple ballad. The acoustic guitar is gorgeous with Wakana's voice and once the strings come in it becomes even more gorgeous. I adore Wakana's singing during the first chorus, that breathing really creates a calming atmosphere. I might have to listen to it a few times to get over the 'simple ballad' phase of my opinion, but I like it right now.

Overall:

Wakana's first EP is a delight. I think I might like it more than the album. I think I say this every time but I'm so far of how far she's come. I don't have any songs that I dislike and I at least like all of them. I think Wakana has really started to create her own path from Kalafina and as much as I miss them, I can't help but be super happy for her.

Orange radio version FULL & talk with Wakana

Wakana had a guest appearance on today’s episode of FM FUJI’s『Selectors』. This time we got “Aki no Sakura” and a full version of “Orange” (although there is a bit of talking at the end). We also got a sneak peek of  track # 5 夕焼け|Yuuyake, a part of it was used as background music while they talked.

This was a fun episode. By now Wakana and the host Yuki Mamiya are well-acquainted, they are obviously enjoying their time together. They are both happy to have been able to meet each other multiple times this year. Yuki praises Wakana for her endless kindness and how she is such a lovely person [don’t we all know it XD] The Yoyogi studio offers a public viewing so lots of fans came to watch. [Ahhh, I wish I could take part in one of these public viewings one day!] Anyways, Yuki explains that the program “Selectors” is actually new so she would like to introduce Wakana to her listeners. The usual shebang, Yuki says “Sora no Kyoukai” instead of “Kara no Kyoukai”, Wakana doesn’t shy away from correcting her XD They talk a bit about their previous talk topics like Wakana being a huge shark fan. Then they continue with their main topic which is movies and TV programs, another favourite thing of Wakana’s. In particular they wanna focus on the horror genre. Wakana isn’t good with horror, she gets scared quite easily but these days she feels like challenging herself so she has made it a habit to watch horror movies and TV programs regularly. Typically she will watch 2 episodes or films a day but with horror she can only watch 1 per weeks or else it will be too much. She always wanted to watch more of this genre but usually she hesitated. She thought it was finally time to change that. Back in the day she wasn’t into any of that but then she came across great shows like The Walking Dead. While she was still super scared she just couldn’t stop watching so that’s how she developed a bigger interest in in the genre. But even when she was a teenager she had a weakness for zombie movies. On Saturdays she would go to the cinema with her older brother and his friends. They would always go in the middle of the night and afterwards they would go to the supermarket to stock up on food in case a zombie apocalypse happened. People were often questioning what they were doing XD There is one thing she cannot watch though and that’s Japanese horror, it’s just too scary for her (like “Ring” for example). We then get “Aki no Sakura” and three songs by other artists selected by Wakana (I will always love you by Whitney Houston - singer she has always looked up to and that inspired her to sing, WOW WAR TONIGHT 〜時には起こせよムーヴメント by H Jungle with t - a song she has always wanted to sing, バッドフォーミー by Official HIGE DANdism - a song she has recently been into).

We then get some talk about Wakana’s EP “Aki no Sakura” which contains five songs in total. She uses a totally different singing style for this EP and it has been quite the challenge. She is happy they went with the EP format because that meant she they could add more songs. And she is even happier they were able to release it before her lives in December because this way there is a strong connection between the EP and the concerts. They chat a bit about the fantasy vibes in the the first song “eve” and how the last song “Yuuyake” is just Wakana and an acoustic guitar. The recording for that was quite the struggle since she did it together with the guitarist. It was hard for them to decide on a proper tempo, they eventually ended up with something very slow. Starting from 30:30 we have the song playing in the background while they promote Wakana’s upcoming lives. It’s hard to focus on the song but from what I can tell, it’s very sweet and lovely. I am getting Christmas vibes for some reason. It will be perfect for Wakana’s winter live. The Tokyo performances are still not sold out [ahhh, I feel so bad for Wakana T_T - I know it’s a weekday but still, it’s HER BIRTHDAY, who would wanna miss that?] Wakana explains that she chose the live title “Matataki/Blink” because a concert is like a single precious moment contained in time where you can enjoy music that’s completely different from the experiene of listening to a studio versio.

Last but not least, the full version of “Orange”. I really didn’t expect a harmonica to appear at the end, OMG, this sounds like it belongs in the 80s, so much nostalgia, I REALLY REALLY like this song.

Orange radio version & talk with Wakana

On today’s episode of『60TRY Bu』Wakana had a guest appearance and introduced two of her new songs, “Aki no Sakura” as well as “Orange”.

Initial reaction: I think I might like “Orange” more than “Aki no Sakura”. There is something about the melody that speaks to me, can’t really explain it yet but so far, I am into it. Can’t wait to listen to the whole song. Wakana wasn’t lying when she said that this EP is very nostalgic, both “Aki no Sakura” as well as “Orange” sound so old-school, it’s definitely a very different style for Wakana

It has pretty much been one year since Hikaru announced her resignment from Space Craft. Seeing as it also took Keiko exactly one year to officially return to her actitivies, it’s safe to assume that their contractual stipulations with Space Craft included some sort of “one-year-work-ban”…These sort of restrictions are very common in the Japanese entertainment industry.

On a random side note, Tomita Akihiro is signed up as producer with the agency. He has hosted a lot of interviews with Kalafina, moderated their Harmony fan club event and even appeared in their 10th Anniversary Film. I am assuming he may have played a significant role in helping Hikaru transition.

What I also find interesting is that Hikaru’s new agency has worked together/is still working together with Space Craft (they are listed as customers)
