I spoke to my friend the other day and she said she had "yet to see a swedish film that is good". I told her about some swedish films I enjoy and she mentioned she hadn't seen those. She hasn't seen any Astrid Lindgren film at ALL (nor does she want to; I suggested it once and she said that's where her line goes), she has not seen Fucking Åmål and has said she "should watch it someday"... but she claims she just thinks swedish films are dumb because she thinks Swedish is a dumb language and she can't take anything seriously.

And like... this is something I have thought about. You never hear any english speaking person claim movies from their own countries are stupid because of that. Like yeah of course every country has bad movies, but never have I heard the reason being "the language is dumb" for an english speaking film.

But for not only swedish, but also other non-english countries, I've seen a similar trend. People who are overly critical to movies from their own countries cause they find "the language dumb" or just "it looks cheap". And I think that's kinda sad!!! There's SO MANY GOOD MOVIES out there and I feel privileged to have easy access to some of them by the pure reason that I understand the language and it might not have been marketed outside my own country. Too bad for everyone else that they won't enjoy this one! And then it's just sad when people speaking my own language won't even give it a chance cause they cringe hearing their native language.

#hello finn clocking in #it's a bad generalisation to say all finnish movies are bad i HAVE seen many that are very good. there's a handful of directors i'm always #into and wanna see what they're doing #BUT!!!!! there are a lot of dogshit finnish movies lmaoooo #it's never because of the language for me. i will say though i think it's probably more common to find the dialogue clunky #when watching something in your native language #like i'm never gonna know if the dialogue feels clunky in a german or french or japanese or arabic or spanish language movie for example #the other thing about finnish cinema is that it feels like the industry could reeeaally employ more actors instead of having the same ones #in every movie over and over again. idk if it's a thing of trying to get people into theaters???? but that's a pet peeve of mine #i do get where the idea of cringing at your language in a movie comes from IF and only if you're used to seeing the dogshit movies #where the dialogue just is admittedly really clunky since i'm sure it is a larger phenomenon #but it's also something where if the film is otherwise good enough it's something you can definitely overlook #also crazy that in ops post the person saying this was swedish #bro comes from the land of fucking INGMAR BERGMAN!!!!!#all this to say you learn with time which films from your own country are worth seeing and which ones are simply not #and sometimes you still go to see bad movies #but it's better to support the film industry in your home country than to completely write off every single film as cringe #also i looooooove when you can tell a movie had a low budget you can really make that work if you do it right #for finns juho kuosmanen and aki kaurismäki and aleksi salmenperä are all directors i think are very good #waiting patiently for juho kuosmanen to do something NEW thats not a TV SHOW #also !! alot of women directors in finland actually like selma vilhunen and jenni toivoniemi #tiina lymi as well though i didnt like myrskyluodon maija all that much #klaus härö got some bangers as well #i also saw i think my favourite documentary i've ever seen last month at a festival #the beauty of errors by jukka kärkkäinen SO fucking good #so there IS a lot you just have to weed out which ones are good just like you do with international cinema as well #every country has bad movies!!!!!!!!
