Open Nature Mango Greek Yogurt Review
So a week ago I was in my greek yogurt craze and decided to explore the wondrous dairy aisle at my local Safeway. I was looking at the different variety of flavors that all greek yogurt brands have to offer. I was pleasantly surprised to find that a mango flavored one exist (I never knew to be honest). Since it was only around $1.00, I decided to give it a go.
Before I get to the review, I wanted to give a little background information on the brand Open Nature. Open Nature is actually a Safeway brand (on the back it reads, "Distributed by Lucerne Foods"), so of course you can only buy this brand exclusively at Safeway, which to me, is a negative.Â
Craving for something with a fruity taste, I dug the fridge only to find the container stored in the back, pretty much hidden from view. When I opened the container, it looks like any other greek yogurt (white, thick). I was a little skeptic at first since my last experience with a Lucerne greek yogurt was disappointing. I had bought a container of greek yogurt by the brand Lucerne (the same that distributed the Open Nature brand), and it came in a container resembling their regular yogurts.
See how similar the packaging is? Anyway, Lucerne's greek yogurt was extremely disappointing, because it did not feel like I was eating greek yogurt, but regular yogurt. On the top cap (where you peel to reveal the yogurt), it claims to be thick and creamy. Creamy? Yes. Thick? Not so much. If you have ever eaten regular Lucerne yogurt (the one picture on the right), it is very diluted compared to Yoplait or any other brand name yogurt. Their greek yogurt line, to me, is just like eating Yoplait.
Anyway, back to the Open Nature.
This one was different. I stirred the container to make sure the fruit on the bottom and the yogurt on the top would be evenly mixed. I was happy to know that the thickness was just like brand name greek yogurt.
I could almost immediately smell the mango upon lifting the cap. It was intoxicating. Another quick fact about me: strawberry used to be my most favorite flavor ever, but for the past year, mango is slowly winning over my heart.
The first bite was heavenly. It had a strong mango taste, but not too strong to the point where it's overpowering. Just right. For some reason I felt like I was eating mango froyo (except the taste wasn't as strong as froyo).
It also had small chunks of mango, but I couldn't really taste it. It was probably because I added some blueberries, which I highly recommend when eating greek yogurt. Because of greek yogurt's tart-y nature, it really goes well with a fruit like blueberry, which to me, tastes "neutral".
I wish I had bought more, but hey, there's always that chance that these could have tasted like crap, and I would be moping over how I wasted a couple bucks.
I did buy the Lucerne brand mango greek yogurt (as pictured above), but I have yet to try it. When I do, I'll be sure to remember to review it, comparing this one, but I'm sure it's no contest.Â
Can't wait to go back to Safeway to see what other flavors Open Nature has to offer.
