Raw Function Juice #1
An attempt to explain cognitive functions and the actions they may produce without conflating character.
Te V Ti
Te
Te is a judging function that is conscious and external. For a Tj to make a judgement they have to have to conclude that this is the most simple solution. This means Te can lack nuance and depth, favouring functionality over detail. Contrary to the stereotype, a Tj can have many contradicting beliefs, because they don't naturally consider things in an internally logical manner. This desire for quick functionality can make Tjs brash and impulsive. They may overshare or accidentally start conflicts by not thinking through their words. Tjs do a lot of their deeper thinking by speaking with someone else, and may change their mind during the course of the debate.
Te respects skill, so Tjs can easily defer to those more qualified than them UNLESS that person is inefficient or immoral. If Te disagrees with someone, it is still capable of respecting them for their passion, dedication, and efficiency. Te wants things to work properly, so Tjs can be passionate about changing the system so that it's more efficient and fair. Te aims to reach peak efficiency and is idealistic in its desire to always improve.
When te feels threatened, Tjs may retaliate forcefully. They may say things they don't mean, or things that don't even make sense. Worse, Tjs may retreat into Fi and withdraw. They may become convinced no one loves them and everyone is persecuting them. They may invent very strange proofs for this, and push everyone away.
Te enjoys talking through ideas, but it doesn't enjoy debating. A Tj's true convictions come from low Fi, so they hold their beliefs passionately, and can be easily offended by disagreement. If the other person doesn't agree, they can reflexively judge them as immoral. In a personal argument, Tjs can become defensive and oversensitive, so it's best to address things as clearly as you can. Any suggestion that they've upset you or caused problems will upset them, and can distract them from the fixable issue. Te enjoys talking with everybody and wants to be liked and respected, but low Fi can make Tjs uncomfortable developing deeper relationships. Thanks to the high te/low Fi pairing they are passionate, idealistic, romantic, brash, and sensitive people, and superficial relationships can be easier for them to manage.
Tjs are stereotyped as being cold and uncaring, but their low Fi means they care very deeply about those they love. They can easily feel threatened by other people, and take great care to handle other's feelings delicately (even if they don't always admit it. But there's no way they want to risk making someone cry and having to deal with THAT). Talking through feelings is something they're very good at (because they're good at talking), but they may struggle to separate their own feelings from the other person's. This can mean they feel terrible if they're not able to cheer the other person up, since low Fi will absorb the negative feelings. They want to show love as efficiently as possible, and aren't afraid to just SAY it. However, they believe actions speak much louder than words, and are more likely to give tangible support when you need it (giving up time, money, etc without a second thought. Because OF COURSE they'll provide for you!). Thanks to te, they want you to be the best you you can be. They're happy to make suggestions if you're not really sure what that means, and will encourage you to pursue your dreams if you do. May also make suggestions as to how to do that.
PSA: these guys want to be scary, but they aren't. They're much more scared of you than you are of them 😂 I've also noticed they have a tendency to ignore their own passions for something that works and sounds good, so pls - encourage your Tjs to follow their dreams (low Fi in their case). Especially since they'll probably be encouraging and enabling you to follow yours.
Ti
Ti is a judging fiction that is conscious and internal. For a tp to make a judgement they have to consciously sort things through in a way that makes sense to them. This does NOT mean tps ignore or hate people. It simply means they have to trust their judgement before another person's.
A tp will be able to defer to someone else if they believe that person to be more skilled in a certain area. They will be able to follow rules if they believe those rules to be fair and important. They aren't actually INCAPABLE of following rules.
While it's true this function doesn't naturally trust others easily, this does not lead to cold, robotic outcomes. Ti is able to see the logic behind relationships, and the need for some give and take. Relationally, Ti can struggle to know how to connect with a person, since it's very internal. Tps will feel connected with a person if they respect another person's thought process. They will be willing to share their ideas and debate them. I haven't found Tps who enjoy debating with just anyone, but I do agree that they can be argumentative with their friends and family. And they may be discouraged to find debating isn't a great way to show most people you like them and want to be friends. Ti can learn to essentially copy people, and tps can become very socially adept.
People expect love from a tp to be robotic, but since Fe is so low in their stack, they can be very empathetic, good listeners. Essentially, they don't really know what to do when people are upset, so they just try to absorb as much information as possible to make a judgement. A tp will ultimately prefer to help in a concrete way, by making you tea, hugging you, or doing a chore for you, but they definitely want to take the time to understand how you feel. Tps aren't comfortable handling people's feelings and want to avoid real conflict where possible, so it's only logical that they emotionally check in with you if your behaviour is a little off. If a tp is unable to help you feel better they can become quiet and withdrawn, feeling the upset very personally, since low Fe feels responsible for others. A tp will do their best to keep you safe, and may try to protect you in very odd ways.
Idk why people say these guys know and understand everything - that's just what they WANT to do guys 😂 These guys can have some off the charts weird ideas about how things work, but they can always explain their logic to you.
