“Do you guys stand in a circle at all of your meetings and recite the same stories?” Steve sighs and waves the man’s words off. He’s had this argument a thousand times - people just refuse to see what it is he fights for. “I stand for what this country should be. I wear this flag and use this name to try and show people what could be, even if there’s a long way to get there. But at least I try and show people that, not force them into a world they don’t understand. Tell me - if you had to take out a city, innocent civilians and all, for this greater good you keep talking about, would you do it? Would you be able to pul that trigger and justify something like that?”
“No, I wouldn’t. Because we would have stopped them from becoming a threat to the people before they have a chance to hurt any of those people. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Every time.”

He offered a clap of his hands from behind the regaling hero telling the tale of victory. Though even just from a clap you could tell it was ripe with sarcasm. “Bravo, Superman. Saved the world again.” The world was singing his praises. “Is this what you hero types do? Because any of what you just said, it went in one ear and out the other.” He dramatized a yawn.
“Defeat the people who would try and hurt civilians, yes. Yes, it is what we do.”

“Honestly - it’s amazing, people never learn, you never grow and you never change. You think you get to pass judgement and decide who deserves a second chance and who doesn’t? Who decided that, exactly? You? Because that sounds biased as hell to me. We don’t get to choose who lives and who dies. And when you think you do, it makes you as bad as them.”
“Everything you accuse me of, I could just as easily accuse you of. You call yourself Captain America, but what has that nation even done for the last sixty years? It has chosen which people can live and die. I am here to fix the system. To make it better. I did not drop a bomb on two civilian cities. I am trying to stop that from ever happening. Criminals will pay to protect the innocent.”

“You seem pretty cavalier about it now. Your actions have massive consequences to others, but it’s a means to your end so that’s the important part, right? None of this is about accepting responsibility and trying to make it right. It’s about covering it up and forcing people to accept your view of the world, not giving them a choice to have their own. Doesn’t sound so heroic to me.”
“We are out there, protecting the people. We can’t wait for these monsters to attack first and then counterattack. We need to stop them before they can hurt anyone else. One more innocent death is too many.”
