THE TIGERS, THEY'RE ALL DEAD'
'The Tigers - They're All Dead' is a satirical short film about the apathy and disillusionment of Indian people from various walks of life about the plight of the country's national animal.
Director Reema Sengupta, a 21-year old filmmaker has a strongly worded opinion on the issue. Here's an excerpt from her views in her own words:
"This short-film was born out of anger and helplessness. Living in India felt like living in an absurdist comedy, and an excellently executed one at that - where not for a second do the characters acknowledge the ridiculousness of it all! But if I only sat and whined, Iâd just be the caricature of your run-of-the-mill holier-than-thou pseudo-patriot. Iâd much rather be the eccentric headless chicken relentlessly running around to change the perspective of the country on the 'absurdism' it embodies, so atleast it can stand back and, you know, enjoy the comedy. So thats what I did - run around like a headless chicken, that is. I ran around to generate funds, to get 12 locations people were crazy enough to trust me with, and to find 30 actors and crew members who would be happy to be headless chickens with me, in making a political satire.
The one moment that consolidated my lifeâs course of being a filmmaker who uses the medium of films for social activism, was when a young girl from Kochi found me in the busy film festival, which is commendable considering how tiny I am, and said that seeing me, a 21-year-old Indian girl, go ahead and make that film, gave her hope that she too can do what she aspires to.Â
This is a film about doing something while we still have the chance. This is a film about the realisation that when the national animal of the country is wiped off its face, we lose a lot more than just a species. This is a film about the apathy of a people who have taken too many hits to care anymore."
