Hugo was already twenty when Natalie was born, and was totally in love with her from day one. He was determined to be the best big brother ever. Of course bad things happen every day. Their parents got into a minor car accident when Natalie was still small. No big deal. Until a third car and a fourth car ended up careening into them due to poor winter roads. 

As far as Natalie (now seven) is concerned, Hugo is her dad. And she's a very precocious little girl.
