the one thing that really doesnt sit right with me about side quests is the specific focus on it being within the timeline of the first two seasons. like i still believe the original at couldve been just as fun as a random-adventures-type show (with maybe some shipbaiting) like it once was if they did more episodes of that caliber during like season 6 or 7. the shows second half in general really. its not like adventure time wouldve lost or wasted its evolving identity by then if they did more action episodes in between the chillout/thought provoking stuff. the show genuinely felt more inventive and rejuvenating to watch when it was basically a 00s cartoon cartoon with swords.
what with fubblegum and all, apart from the corporate greed, id actually *love* to watch the spinoff if the writers would concede and give them some specific moments that would be in line with their some interactions back in the first two seasons. like never forget where you came from lmao. the only thing about it, is that to me, finn and pbs relationship had peaked by the time where they were doing the miniseries, when they were displaying moments like how anxious bonnie got when finn was about to sail off into the unknown to find out his origins and she intuitively knew that he was going to find "some pretty heavy stuff". that imo kills the overarching "pb is like finns mom" narrative i think side quests is passively trying to make, because shes accepted then and there finn is a guest in her life, but still looks out for him because bon wouldnt know what to do if she lost him. like hes a close one to her from being a stranger.
if only wed gotten more episodes where they had an eye for each other that way while finn still had the metal arm/grass curse. if adventure time still is the ever growing in-potential franchise people say it is, we wouldnt just be getting kid finn over and over again. if side quests actually lasts as long as the original at did (and i know itll have the numbers to show for it) then i kinda hope it becomes a complete rewrite of everything that had been established/does more recontextualization. go the fullmetal alchemist route if you know what i mean.
set it during the later seasons, go further down the timeline. make the two most important characters speak more and laugh about it. like at the end of the day side quests isnt meant to replace the original show and everything that comes after it canonically, and theyve *confirmed* this. make the fact that its an alternate universe have MEANING.
idk.
There are already elements in the side quests that don't perfectly align with the established timeline, so the fact that the story takes place in an alternate universe isn't an issue for me. As for the side quests being set during the early seasons—with Finn back as a child—I think that was a better choice. After all, as Finn grew older, his relentless thirst for action waned, and he became a more peaceful person. It’s also great to witness him learning everything all over again. Of course, I’d still love to see more episodes featuring teenage or adult Finn down the line. Perhaps this time they’ll stick closer to the original concept? I don’t know, but my only hope is that they use this opportunity to remain faithful to the show's bible, Pendleton Ward created for Adventure Time. That said, I hope this production—at the very least—clearly depicts PB’s feelings for Finn for the sake of those who haven't quite grasped the nature of their relationship, thereby putting an end to the debate once and for all. For instance, when exactly did Bubblegum first fall in love with him? I have to know!!!
