“A surprise? For what occasion?”

“Well, you told me you never knew when your birthday was. So I thought maybe we could consider it to be when you arrived on Erid,” Grace explained.

“Oh. And when was that?”

“January 30th.”

Simon smiled. It was one of his sweet smiles, one where Grace realized how much he loved him. His irises sparkled, lines appeared at the corners of his eyes, and he sometimes let out a low laugh when he smiled like that.

Little extract, Rocky and Grace time :)

"Grace and Simon fight, question?”

Grace toyed a bit with the meburger on his plate, tearing off a few pieces of the bun.

“Sort of, I guess… I… I told him I loved him. And he didn’t exactly have the best reaction. He looked upset, and he didn’t believe me…”

His throat tightened, and he fell silent. Beside him, Rocky remained silent for a moment as well. Grace could tell by the way his body slumped sadly that he was sad, or something of the sort.

“Rocky apologize.”

“What? Oh, no, no— You don’t have to!”

“Rocky told Grace to talk to Simon. But talk went bad.”

“Oh my…” he whispered breathlessly.

A lump formed in his throat. He heard a sniffle, but it didn’t come from him. He turned toward Simon, who was gazing up at the sky with tear-filled eyes. That sight moved him even more than the rainbow itself.

“It’s pretty, huh?” Grace said softly.

“I… I didn’t know it could be this big or this vibrant… I’ve only seen these in old recordings from Earth…”

Grace raised an eyebrow skeptically but didn’t push the issue. He knew he was working too hard. Even though, strictly speaking, this wasn’t really work. With a small, slightly reluctant sigh, he closed his laptop. But the satisfied smile Simon gave him made it worth it.

“Wanna watch a movie tonight, while eating?” Grace asked.

“Really? So you can strain your eyes even more?”

The scientist joined his friend by the door and took the mug he was holding out. Their fingers brushed, and Grace relished in that.

“I have glasses, it’s fine.”

“Yeah, so you shouldn’t fuck them up even more, Ry.”

Grace blinked innocently at Simon, tilting his head slightly. He’d recently noticed that this tactic was working better and better, and he fully intended to use it to his advantage.

Simon looked away, but it was too late. He grunted, then shrugged.

“Fine, smartass. But I pick the movie.”

“What name did you choose, question?” asked the Eridian after a little while.

Grace pulled away from him slightly and turned his gaze toward the sea for a moment.

“I thought of several. How many kids are you having?”

“Don’t know yet. Between one and four.”

“Do I get to name all of them? No, right?”

Rocky shrugged, a gesture he’d picked up from Grace while on the Hail Mary.

“We will see. Give names.”

“I’ve only thought of two. Mary, like the ship, because it’s quite pretty, and… Eva.”

Rocky made a questioning sound at the second name. Grace raised an eyebrow, and— Oh, right.

“It’s Stratt’s full name. Eva Stratt,” he explained.

Without resisting, the teacher leaned against the other man, and slipped his arms around his waist. He rested his cheek against his shoulder and closed his eyes for a moment. He felt two hands on his back, gently running over his t-shirt, exploring the sensations. One was warm, the other cold, but both were there, resting against him.
