A Friend In Need | Kydia
Lydia couldn’t remember the last time she felt so small and childish. She sat on the side of her bed in her empty dorm room, eyes brimming with warm tears and her head throbbing from hard sobs. It was difficult to stop any of it and trying seemed to only make her head hurt more. A part of her wished for some company–a shoulder to cry on but the two closest people she thought might provide that for her were the two she had been adamantly avoiding. Her mother wouldn’t have been much help; she was certain that her mother would hypocritically pass judgement or remind her that she was an adult and would have to deal with the consequences like she did. Neither of these scenarios were ones that Lydia wanted to hear from her mom right now, so she avoided her as well. Once she wiped away a fresh stream of tears on her sleeve, she pulled her knees up toward her chest, bowed her head and forced herself to at least take some deep breaths. It may not have been as disastrous as she was feeling it was, but logic was too far away to console her.Â
Kara’s concern for her roommate’s wellbeing was at it’s highest point but she had no idea what she could do - or even if there was anything she could do.  She was far from an expert in normal adult behaviour but the signs of Lydia being ill were clear and Kara had taken to doing everything she could to help.  Small things like asking if there was anything Lydia needed, always making sure she had a full glass of water next to her bed and on occasions holding the other girl’s hair out of the way while she was being ill.  Lydia had always been there for her when she had needed it, always ready with a shoulder to cry on after a nightmare or words of advice when the teasing Kara received started to upset her - she really wanted to return that gesture but every time she asked Lydia would say there was nothing wrong.  When she entered the dorm room she saw Lydia sitting exactly as she did whenever there was something wrong and she immediately dived into her drawer to fish out some tissues - emoji ones because they made her smile.  “Heyyy, are you ok?”  She asked, knowing it was a stupid question but not knowing what else to say.  She sat next to the other girl and rubbed her hand softly over Lydia’s back, placing the tissues next to them.  “Have you been poorly sick again?”
