He does not want to be here, but thanks to Richie's dad flaking out last minute once again, he has been stuck with the responsibility. This is not a rare occurrence. At least, for the good of everyone, he didn't actually have to do any of the baking. He sighs and realises he should probably look like he's paying attention if he's going to be there, only to look up and meet eyes with Karen, immediately flushing with embarassment. [ Karen smiled down at Paul, not with a smile of mockery or amusement - just a warm, gentle smile. She waved at him before speaking. ]

"Hey there. You doing okay dear? I saw you from a table nearby and got worried from how you were positioned."

"Oh! Yeah! Yeah, I... I'm fine," Paul replied quickly, flushed with embarrassment.

"Sorry..." He scanned the rolodex in his mind for the woman's name, having seen her a couple of times on previous occasions when his brother dropped out last minute. "... Ma'am," he settled with. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just uh... tired." That was a better synonym for 'bored out of his mind', right? Uncomfortable? Exhausted? "I just came straight from work, so."

"That makes sense, deary. Work can be exhausting.. Mind if I sit?"

[ she gestured to the empty chair next to her. ]

"Oh, uh. Yeah, sure," Paul nodded, sitting up a little straighter as she motioned to sit next to him. "I'm Paul, by the way," he added, noticing she hadn't said his name yet either. Hopefully either they hadn't been introduced yet, or both of them had forgotten instead of just him. "I know I'm a pretty irregular face here. My nephew goes to this school."

"My daughter goes here too, I think her and your nephew have hung around each other."

This lady didn't seem like the wife of Mayor Lauter - he was pretty sure the guy was single - and Paul knew Ruth's parents from Richie being his friend since childhood, so... "Mrs Chastity." Paul nodded, so proud of himself for a second that he forgot to be pretending to remember who she was. He was pretty sure he was rumbled now anyway.
