Hanging Out | Karen and Seth
“Nothing. Why?”
“Perfect. You’re coming to the movies with me. I want to see Cinderella.”
“Hmm? And where would we go off to, Karen?”
“Anywhere that’s not here?”
“It’s been a slow day at the office… This needs to change.”
“Then come on. Let’s leave.”
Hanging Out | Karen and Seth
“”Hey. What are you doing tonight?”
"Well that is sort of a you thing to do.” Seth decided to move past the topic. He held his arm out for Karen to take. It was best to just let it go. “Come on, I will take you to the ballroom.”
Karen glared at Seth. "Well guess what, mister. I'm not doing that anymore. Beside, I'm not an awful date like that. Just when I'm alone." As Karen grabbed his arm, she tried to keep down the negative feelings she had about herself. "So... are you any good at this formal dancing crap?" she asked, trying to make small talk. "Because I'm so not."
"The bar is over there," Seth spoke softly as he walked up behind Karen. It was a bit strange that his first year at the ball and he had a date — a date he hadn’t known a whole heck of a long time. But he couldn’t imagine being with anyone else. "Just take it easy till we get to the second room."
"Hey thanks," Karen said with a smile. It quickly faded and she was tempted to smack Seth in the arm. "Wow, you think I'm going to get drunk now?" she asked. "Maybe I wanted some pop. Jeez."
"Once again, this crazy party." Karen stood in the doorway and looked around the room. She could remember how strange, but fun, the party was. And now she was getting excited again. "So where is this bar? I need something until the better room is open."
"It’s my first year getting invited to the ball and I am not even that excited."
"Ball? I can't see you going to some formal dance."
New Years Eve [OPEN]
"It’s fine," Seth spoke with a soft voice as he waved his hand a bit dismissively. "I know that school can be hard work and it could be tedious. But you seem to be a smart girl with a good head on her shoulders. I bet you that if you found a certificate class and buckled down for a year then you could be done with schooling and have a great career. Plus no gen eds or any kind of nonsense. That might be something you could tolerate more."
Karen was shocked. It was rare for someone, outside of Oliver, to say anything nice about her. School always considered her lazy and stupid. Why did this guy want to change that? "You really think so?" she asked. "...I wouldn't know where to start looking for a career, let alone a school... I don't want to bother you again, but do you think you can help me?"
"Alright, alright. I will come over more often. You can always come by my place too."
"You don't want me coming over. It would seem so much better than living with Oliver, I might not leave."
"I need to gather a couple more leads, then I can have you go talk to people. Otherwise if you just happen to hear anything then let me know."
"You got it."
"I guess I could try and come over more."
"Please, Kristen? I really miss you. And I'm always worried I'll never see you again."
New Years Eve [OPEN]
"No. Not everyone is meant for college," Seth shrugged his shoulders once more as spoke softly. "Have you tried telling your dad and your brother that? Maybe there is a certificate degree you can do. Like a pharmacy tech or something. You’d take a couple classes and be done in no time."
"That's not the problem. My dad would let me go to any school, tech or four year or whatever." Karen sighed and played with her drink. "I just... hate school. I don't want to be there. I want to have a job and a life already... And sorry this is getting super personal and awkward for you."
"I love you too, Karen. Even if I am terrible at showing it."
"You know, you should come over and visit sometime. Oliver isn't that much of a pain at home."
New Years Eve [OPEN]
"It’s not so much what you are good at," Seth started as shrugged his shoulders. "It’s more about what you feel you would enjoy doing. Whatever you feel you would be most passionate about."
"Is it sad if the only thing I'm passionate about is sleeping or hanging out with my friends?" Karen gave him a look. She was hoping for some reassurance. Instead she knew she sounded pathetic. "I just... I'm not college material. I get that. But going is the only way my dad will let me live in the city. I don't want to go back home with him."
"Pretty much. I will give you some leads and you’ll just have to go talk to people."
"Cool, I can do that. When do I start?"
Dear Karen, you seem like a sweet and pretty young girl. Just be careful on these rough streets of Chicago. You don't know the people you associate with as well as you think. From your secret admirer.
Thanks, secret admirer. But I’m not too worried. I’m a McKenzie, and we’re tough.
