“I Started As A Pastry Chef” - An interactive zine

I incorporated these simple, fun methods into my zine in the hopes of immersing the viewer even more into the “world” of my creative. With this, they’re not only gaining the information visually but can, in a way, “live” through it when they follow along.

(These GIFs are very sloppy but I can’t be bothered.)

Thus ends the long chain of zine-related posts I have for my Tumblr. This online reflective journal was fun to keep, mostly because I’ve always enjoyed blogging, but also because it’s cool to connect with other friends in the program through this platform as well.

End of Semester 1 and Communication Design Classes

Well that’s a wrap for Communication Design classes/lectures and semester 1! It’s crazy how fast it all went and how much you learn in such little time. I had no idea what to expect in this course (even though I missed like 2 or 3 classes), but I’ve learnt a lot and caught up!:

Typefaces: How many different varieties can be formed and the the types you can make with any materials. Literally every time I look at a logo, poster, sign or anything with type, I analyse it and can’t help myself. Even just looking at buildings I see a typeface (insert laughing emoji face). My favourite class would of had to been when we used shapes to create letterforms with a group which was so much fun! 

Zines: Omg when Andy and Karen said our ask me anything can be in a form of a zine, I was like the hell is that?! I even googled it and I sort of understood a bit…. I’ve never even heard the word ‘zine’ (how very sad)  but eventually when Andy performed a demonstrated on how to form a zine and what exactly it is, and that’s when it alllll clicked in. 

Design In General: Another important thing I learnt is what design really is and how far you can go with it. It’s a question that has many possibilities of answers and can be debatable on what design is. To me, design is seeing how far you can push yourself to create something that reflects your style and importantly represent who you are as a designer. As much as I can’t help myself and hate my work sometimes, it’s not alway about the aesthetics. In the end, it’s about how you can establish yourself in the design world and contribute to it.

Script Fonts book: “A guide to the script font jungle”

A few year ago (six in fact) Laurence King published a handy and fun guide to Retro Fonts, which I frequently pick up and browse through. This week they published Script Fonts compendium with the same useful format and design. 

The book catalogues over 300 typefaces, chosen by the author, Geum-Hee Hong and Karin and Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs. In their own words: 

“We embarked on our search, deliberately selecting not only the best and beautiful examples of handwriting, but also curiosities like the digitized handwriting of famous presidents or Paul Cézanne.”

The book is helpfully broken into sections like: Handwriting / Spontaneous and Personal or English Copperplate / The Distinguished Elegance of a Pointed Nib.

The book makes a great jumping-off point to browse the other typefaces of designers and foundries mentioned and as a bonus, the book is accompanied by a CD which includes 122 free fonts.

Ask Me Anything - Assignment 3 DONE!

For this Assignment, I decided to present my interview in the form of a Zine. My artist was @Screen14 who Is a UK based screen printer I’ve followed for quite some time now. Jon’s been a great influence on the way I’ve ventured into printmaking, and also into design by trying a different approach which is to create posters through silkscreens instead of digital design. 

I had a love-hate relationship with this assignment, but overall it was challenging in a fun way. It was a good challenge :) Thanks again to Jon (a.k.a @screen14) for taking the time to answer my questions and allowing me to share your work.

Final Assignment for Comm Design; Ask Me Anything!

Zine based on my old art teacher Helen Bishop; originally I was going to do a website but then changed my mind to do a zine. Majority of this was spontaneous and didn’t want to spend a lot on printing so I had to re-incorporate my ‘art’ skills and techniques and turned out alright I guess!

The last project “Ask me anything” for Communication Design Studies grap2199 completed and submitted. Zine around A5 size, cover made with a thick plastic sheet and a flyscreen on the back. Was a joyful process as that was my first experience of making a zine and something that I’m going to continue with.

What’s Next for Design?

Today’s lecture was very interesting. Andy and Karen discussed the future of design; what’s next for the design world. With new technology being created, examples of this is evident in the Eyewriter and the Public Face in Berlin. Both the EyeWriter and Public Face of Berlin was probably my favourites. I was quite amazed. 

The EyeWriter was designed for paralysed graffiti artist TEMPT1 where it uses inexpensive cameras and open source computer vision software to track the wearer's eye movements.

Lastly, the Public Face in Berlin analysed the publics facial expression, filmed by surveillance cameras. Their facial expressions are then analyzed by software created by the artists that uses algorithms developed by the Fraunhofer Institute. Emotions conveyed such as happy, sad or neutral would change the sculpture made of steel, neon and tubes! (HOW COOL)

As Andy said, what’s left for us designers to design? Of course, human machine interactions will be the next thing in our design world, but of course leading to many new questions to be asked.
