she waited patiently as soft, hesitant russian spilled from his lips, a smile on her face. it was such a beautiful language, even spoken by someone not native to her country. it made her miss the snow capped mountains and biting winters, somehow. it made her miss a childhood of soft words and cold afternoons. “о, это совсем позор. это очень красиво. Вы должны очень гордиться вашего дома.” she smiled in acknowledgement of his movement, scratching beneath the cat’s chin. “well, now you are a speaker of a most beautiful language,” she concluded, mostly directed towards the animal. “she reminds me of my brother.” a laugh. a genuine, honest to god laugh. it had been too long since she’d known one of those. “my father.” she said, quietly. “my mother thought it best for igor and i to be out of the country.”

The USSR have had a tight, clawed grip on his country for years and so whenever he used to visit, their accent and language rubbed off on him. “I’m Romanian, or at least my parents were. I know some Russian because of it.” He patted the ground next to him. “Yeah, her name’s Conkers. Хотите присоединиться ко мне?“

katya smiled at the recognition of her accent, coming a little closer to the pair on the ground. “да! ах, румынии! какая прекрасная страна. я побывал там в детстве,” she said, recognizing the soft, stilted russian he spoke next. it was so familiar that it almost made her want to cry. “мне было бы приятно,” she smiled, sitting down by him and running a soft hand over the cat’s head. “she’s precious.”
