Concept Statement

Window on a Changing World

2018

My final work, titled “Window on a Changing World”, reflects on - as stated in the titled, a version of a world changing. With themes that are apocalyptic and futuristic, this body of work reflects the weekly course concept of “perception”. When initially researching into this concept, I looked up what perception actually meant. Defined as “the act or faculty [of] apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind” (dictionary.com), I thought this would work well in conjunction with Jeannie Baker’s book ‘Window’, as it explores the nature changing environments. Being surrounded by multiple ways in which the future is to be interpreted, I decided to include an additional series in Baker’s book. I chose the first image in ‘Window’, which depicts a mother holding her newborn. The original image displays the character’s backyard; filled with greenery and nature. In this reinterpretation, the mother and newborn look at their backyard - space. As the video continues, rather than the mother and child moving, moving images are added through the window. This idea of perception showcases both straight perspective, as the mother perceives what is going on outside. However, it also exemplifies that changing nature of the world around us, and a question as to what the world may be like in the future. Although this work doesn’t necessarily showcase accurate depictions of this, is allows the audience to question the possibilities of what may be in store of the world down the road.

Assessment Three: NEW INSPIRATION

I saw this excerpt of Joe Hamilton’s ‘Merge Nodes’ and thought it was something I’d like to explore further. The images in the window slots are moving images, and so I will want to do something similar. I’m still going to keep the image of of Jeannie Baker’s ‘Window’, and the futuristic theme that I’ve explored in previous still collages.

I’ve chosen to move away from the previous idea of using a projector and deconstructing collages, as the moving image, and Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro are tools I’m used to, and would like to explore further.

In saying that, I will keep the previous idea in mind, and use it for another project down the road.

I’ve decided to expand further by taking an image from Jeannie Baker’s book ‘Window’. As the book explores the nature of changing environments, I was interested to take that an put it in the view of a futuristic concept, as the theme is something I’ve been thinking about from watching Netflix shows including ‘Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey’, ‘Titan’, and ‘Annihilation’.

After speaking to Kusum, the option of using a projector as part of the collage is something I’ve been considering. I will want to use that as the base image, which will be the image of space, and possibly the moon.

Moving forward, I’ve been thinking about ways to further explore my theme, and decided to incorporate the city in the concept of space.

Assessment Three: THEME INSPIRATION

Psychedelic art is a theme I’d be interesting in considering as a theme to the collages. Nature and vibrant colour are characteristics of this art form, and something I would want to incorporate into the collages.  

I also want to include elements of space into the collages, as it goes beyond a reality that most human beings aren’t used to. I thought it would be an interesting inclusion to perception and Surrealist art.

Assessment Three : ARTIST INSPIRATION

Elena Papanikolakis is a visual artist, and part of my inspiration for my assignment. I’m most inspired by her collages, and her use of drawing, painting and photography to create these images.

This made me think about how collages are constructed. The layers of collages are flattened when put together, so I thought about the idea of deconstructing the collage, using more physical elements and putting it together to create a 3-dimensional collage. When perceived from a particular angle, it looks like a normal collage, however as you move and create a different perspective of it, you notice the different layers and materials used that create the final product.

To come up with the final collage, I will experiment with creating collages on photoshop, and look at how I can deconstruct and take each layer out.

Surrealism has been a factor and inspiration for the sort of collage I want to create. This correlates with perception, where Surrealism counterpoints rationality, and allows the audience to channel their unconscious and valid reality.

I’m interested in the idea of layering, as it distorts the original meaning and understanding of the image, and can create a new one. I want to be able to create a collage that changes the audience’s view.

Initial ideas and thoughts surrounding the idea of reflection as part of perception. After spending time travelling to and from uni on the train, I’ve thought about reflection, and placing two different scenarios in one image.

As I sit, commuting almost three hours every day, I notice the outside world that I’m constantly travelling passed. Moving from the outside world, you are focussed in, and look at the reflections from the insides of the train. This idea of placing two scenarios into one image made me think of experimenting further with photography and double exposure.

Last week we experimented with developing a small in class exercise into a larger, group based work whilst also focusing on the power of documentation to frame something and give it a sense of intention. The results were really rewarding. We observed the space between failure and success in learning a new skill (whistling using a leaf).

Concept Statement

The artwork chosen is Infra realism by Kate Ballis and demonstrations the idea of perception. She used cameras that were converted to full spectrum and she also used various filters to achieve the final intended effect. Perception is represented by distorting the images using colour to highlight and contrast buildings and vegetation. We began the design process by researching the ideas of perception and how we could utilise these ideas in our own artwork so experimented with different materials. Some of the materials were translucent, coloured, scrunched and made our views of objects blurry. After selecting these materials we photographed very common images on the street and of flowers and different vegetation while using the materials to cover the lenses of the camera to distort the otherwise common images. By experimenting with distances between the lenses and materials as well as distances between lenses and objects in the images, we created different perceptions. This is demonstrated through the focus of lenses and how we see an image. Sometimes we focus through the material and the material distorts the object we focus on and other times the focus becomes on the material making the object in the background blurry, changing our perception of what we are looking at. Infra realism also has the ability to highlight aspects of an image that were otherwise going unnoticed which is also evident in our artwork as the materials are used to highlight and disregard aspects of an image to have a different perception of the same image. We used the editing programs to gather the images and videos to further enhance the idea of different perceptions being created with distractions of images and blurred film.

Week 5: Documenting and Editing

For this week’s class activity, I explored with editing my transformation video. Challenging my initial meaning behind the video, I used a combination of my work and other student’s work to heighten my original idea of the box being challenged and confused in its surrounding natural, fluid and moving environment in contrast to its own straight and right-angled figure.

I interpreted the box to represent technology, accompanied with sound effects, opposing the fluid movements of the trees, animation, and various colours that are also apparent. I titled this ‘Temperamental’, highlighting the role that is ever-growing and highly influences what we see, hear and think about experiences.

This then challenges the perception of the audience, where the sounds contrast what is being viewed until the very end as a sense of power and the strong presence technology plays in the contemporary world.
