World’s most dangerous bird has bizarre, glowing headgear
Structures on cassowaries’ skulls fluoresce under UV light, hinting at a hidden visual signal
Often labeled “the world’s most dangerous birds,” cassowaries just got even more intriguing. The aggressive, flightless birds have structures on top of their heads called casques, the purpose of which has long confused scientists. To the human eye, casques look fairly plain—but new research published last month in Scientific Reports finds this headgear fluoresces under ultraviolet (UV) light, possibly aiding the birds’ visual displays...

Hamachiyo 浜千代, Takamatsu Geiko in the late Shôwa era. Hamachiyo was a natori of the Kiyomoto school of Joruri, studying under master Umejû 梅寿. The Takamatsu Hanamachi was established in the late 1800's. Around 1885, the first Kenban (registry office) was established. Around 1892, a second Kenban was established in Katahara-machi, called "Higashi 東" (eastern)". The older one was remaned to Nishi 西" (western) Kenban. In the time between 1900 and 1930, there were over 100 Geiko and about 15 Maiko. Higashi Kenban was renamed to Tamamo 玉藻-Kenban before 1909, and at a later point renamed afain to Naka 中-Kenban. Takamatsu Geiko likely studied Kineya 杵屋-ryu for Nagauta and Fujima 藤間-ryu for dance. Photo published in Hana Akari: Shôwa Meigiren, p. 212, quick paint job by me
Hey, peeps - I need your help to identify some old werewolf media! Many years ago I saved a bunch of screencaps from werewolf movies and television shows that I, foolishly, did not properly name (I never thought this would ever be a problem then). While I found the original site I got these caps from, the site itself has turned into some kind of dead content farm and reverse image search is giving me nothing but duds. If anyone here could help me find the source media for these caps, I would be very grateful!
Thank you in advance!
1st image = unfamiliar sadly
2nd & 3rd images = Eyes of the Werewolf (1999) (I think?)
4th and 5th images = Mexican Werewolf in Texas (2005)
6th image = again, unfamilar sadly
7th image = the Angel episode 'Unleashed'
8th image = the Buffy episode 'Phases'
9th image = the Doctor Who episode 'Tooth & Claw'
10th image = the Werewolf (1987) tv series
A very special thank you very much to @kilbaro, @featherwurm, @paradoxespersonified, @makeupeffectsarchive, and @foxish-nonsense ! I have a full source list thanks to all of you!

This deep-sea fish has one of the best strategies for hiding in the deep-sea 🖤✨️
The California slickhead (Alepocephalus sp.) is often found below 1,000 meters (about 3,300 feet). Their name was inspired by the lack of scales on the fish's head. Those large eyes give the slickhead an edge in an environment where food can be scarce. It can glimpse even the faintest flickers of bioluminescence—the “living light” produced by deep-sea animals.
Deep-sea animals have a variety of remarkable adaptations to help them hide in the midnight zone, but this species uses the shade of their skin to hide from predators and prey in this dark expanse. Ultra-black fishes have unique structures in their skin that very efficiently trap and absorb light. Melanin—the same pigment found in human skin—is densely packed into super-thin layers on the outermost surface of their skin. While most light photons are immediately absorbed, the specific shape, size, and configuration of these melanin layers scatter any missed photons into neighboring skin cells, where they are subsequently absorbed. Ultimately, ultra-black skin absorbs 99.5 percent (or more) of the visible light with virtually none reflected.
May 17th, 2026: Pontocho's sakkō outfits are always very bright and, this time, it's a woman from Masamiya (雅美家) who is shining brightly as she makes the journey from maiko to geiko. Hidesaki (秀咲季) is now in her final hairstyle and outfit as a maiko, and the look is stunning! Each okiya in Pontocho has a special iromontsuki for sakkō, and Masamiya's is purple with the Onoe school's chrysanthemum kamon and leaves. It's paired beautifully with a golden shōchikubai obi and topped off with a silver wire crane over pine kanzashi; simple yet elegant. Pontocho tends to have a longer sakkō period than the other kagai, especially during odori season, and Hidesaki has been no exception. Her erikae will take place next month on June 15th ^^ Image courtesy of Tantsuru Ochaya/Katsumi Okiya.
Frother Moths: when these moths feel threatened, they secrete a frothy yellow substance that is noxious and distasteful to predators
Above: Amerila astreus with two large globs of defensive froth
Moths of the genus Amerila are often described as frother moths, because they're able to secrete a frothy, foul-tasting substance that helps to deter predators. The fluid is produced by the prothoracic glands, which are located near the base of each wing (just behind the moth's head) and a distinctive "sizzling" or "hissing" sound is emitted as the frothy substance bubbles out.
Above: Amerila astreus
As this article explains:
If molested, resting adults produce quantities of a frothy, orange fluid from their prothoracic glands, accompanied by a sizzling sound. The froth not only has an aversive odor to humans but also contains PAs (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) which are taste-repelling.
Above: a frother moth producing its defensive secretion
The adult moths of this genus are pharmacophagous, which means that they acquire the chemicals that are used to create their defensive froth by ingesting plants that contain toxic or noxious compounds; those chemicals are then sequestered within the moth's own body, where they are repurposed and transformed into a frothy secretion.
Above: genus Amerila
Frother moths also use aposematic markings to signal their toxicity and/or unpalatability. Their legs, thorax, and abdomen are all decorated with reddish-pink markings, and they have large black spots that stand out against their mostly-white bodies.
Above: Amerila crokeri and Amerila rubripes
The genus Amerila contains dozens of species, and they are all known to have this defense mechanism. They are widely distributed throughout many different parts of the world; depending on the species, they may be found in the Himalayas, Indochina, Southeast Asia, Melanesia, Australia, or Africa.
Above: Amerila crokeri
Several other moths from the subfamily Arctiinae can produce a similar defensive secretion when threatened, but the color, consistency, and composition of the substance differs greatly from one species to the next.

Reenactor throws a spear at a drone
What a time to be alive.
“The medieval warrior, realizing the consequences of his impulsive act, immediately approached the owner of the drone and offered to pay for the damage.
The owner of the drone was so impressed by the brilliant attack that he suggested organizing a competition for bringing down “dragons” with short spears next year.
Drone owners have another year to develop a unique “dragon-like” design for their flying machines.” (x)
I am 100% cooler with this knowing that the spear-thrower realized “oops maybe I shouldn’t have done that” and tried to make it right, and that the guy who the drone belonged to was cool with it
just so everyone knows, this has already been memorialized in a runestone
Everything about this post blesses those involved with a +4 on their next Today is Good Day roll
a rough translation of inscription on the runestone:
On the seventh day of May in the year of 2016 on hither spot the mighty warrior Ulf hath slain a dragon with his spear.
so yeah, happy birthday to this dragon-slaying event and to it only
Happy Ulf Hath Slain A Dragon With His Spear!
