Living in place like this had of course taken its toll on the Black Paladin but for Keith’s sake rather than his own, he did his utmost to make sure the younger didn’t suspect any of the turmoil within. Most of the time, he was within his own personal storm; his thoughts wandering to dark places he’d rather not revisit and knowing their… situation and how they had come to this place, there was nothing that could quell the aching in his chest or the constant pangs of worry in the pit of his stomach. Sure, having Keith here was a blessing—he didn’t know how well he would cope on his own, actually—but it wasn’t quite enough, as much as he wanted it to be.
Keith had disappeared that afternoon, leaving Shiro alone with his thoughts though he was drawn back to reality as Keith’s voice floated through his mind: stay where you are and cover your eyes.
Suspicion was instant but it was Keith, how could he not trust him? He promised it was good, so it had to be. Okay, he thought in response—honestly, this was still incredibly weird, communicating with Keith like this—and closed his eyes as instructed. Done. Go ahead.
And so he waits, arms crossed and eyes closed as Keith requested, no peeking either. He hears the door open and footsteps approach him and he still remains as he was, awaiting Keith’s instruction rather than taking it upon himself to look. Finally, the footsteps cease and Keith’s voice (in person this time) once again instruct him to reopen his eyes and when he does so, his curious expression shifted immediately to surprise as his gaze meets that of a small puppy in the Red Paladins hands.
Slowly, as not to startle the puppy, he raised his left hand to gently tickle the puppy behind one of it’s rather fluffy ears. “Well, hi…” The puppy seemed to react positively to his touch, so that was promising. A small smile formed upon his lips as he tears his gaze from the puppy to Keith as he asked, “Where did you get it?” He didn’t know puppies even existed here… in fact, he couldn’t remember the last time he had actually seen a puppy, so the surprise was more than welcomed, however his curiosity couldn’t be settled until Keith explained.
≼ 🔥 ≽ Keith smiles as Shiro moves to pet the puppy, shifting his own arm to cradle her and give support to her back legs while still holding her up to him. He’d seen someone with a dog there before, and really it had been on his mind since then; if not for himself, for Shiro. He lifts the puppy further, gently pressing her cheek to his cheek.
“Her. And I actually just found her when I was out. I...figured it was too cold for a puppy to just be alone, that maybe she’d be better off with us. With you.” And maybe both would be better together, each to help each other and help Shiro. That’s what was important. The puppy wiggles in Keith’s arms, happily licking Shiro’s cheek before Keith places the pup against the taller man’s chest, grabbing his left arm and wrapping it under the dog to cradle her like he had. Then he grabs his robotic hand, hesitating for a moment before deciding to just hold it for himself instead of placing it on the dog.
“We could name her together, if you want. But she’s yours. She...she reminded me of you a lot.” Cute. He pauses after thinking that, cheeks staining a touch of red. Fuck.... “She’s black and white! And the eyes!” He blurts his words out, rushing to try to cover up the thoughts he forgot would be broadcast to the other. This was...still new.
