Bird Of The Week: Barn Owls
🦉Barn owls can be found across all continents except for Antarctica. They are also fond of abandoned man made structures.
🦉Given their affinity for "scary" places, their pale plumage, and their capability of silent flight, they have received several nicknames such as the ghost owl, death owl, night owl, or demon owl.
🦉They eat most small rodents or small mammals, leaning heavily towards voles.
🦉Their heart shaped facial disc as well as their asymmetric ears aid in their ability to hunt by enhancing their hearing. This also earns them another nickname: the heart faced owl.
🦉They are also one of the few sexually dimorphic owl species which means the males and females of the species will appear different in coloration. Female (left). Male (right).
🦉They are in most cases strictly nocturnal which means they hunt at night.
