Luca frowned slightly. “Why did you want to get away from magic?”

Katie went rigid slightly. “It’s kind of a long story. Growing up around it your whole life, makes you want to get away from it for once,” Katie replied. That wasn’t the real reason, but she wasn’t about to tell the boy her entire life story.

Mike looked at her for a moment more, knowing her face from somewhere. And then finally, it hit him. “You’re Jess Davenport’s sister. You look exactly like her.” He smiled upon figuring it out. “You go to school here, Bearclaw?”

“Oh yeah, one of them,” Katie replied. “Thanks I guess. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not.” Katie nodded at Michael’s question. “Yeah, I do, I’m a Violin Performance major. One of many. Do you go here? I didn’t think anyone else from Ilvermorny went here.”

“Ugh, I don’t want to go back to school.” April sighed as she flopped onto Kate’s bed. “People suck a lot.”

“So you two broke up?” Katie asked. “Merlin, I miss so much all the time.” She then raised her eyebrows. “Online dating is horrible. You haveto be doing it wrong then, let me help you.”

“So, are you totally regretting your decision to leave school for more school?” He asked, making a face as it came out all wrong. “Ok that’s not what I mean, I hope you don’t regret it - I just can’t imagine still being in school.”

Katie let out a small laugh. “Just a little bit, to be honest. I have a big course load. Though I feel like I wrote more essays at Ilvermorny so it’s not that bad. And paper is way better than parchment.” She shrugged. “But I’m doing what I like so I can’t really complain too much. How about you. Are you regretting your decision to ignore all the odds about never being able to fly again and go into refereeing?”

“I dunno, you go to school in Massachusetts?” He asked as he checked his phone. After making sure it wasn’t broken, he shoved it in his pocket. “You look like you’re about my sister’s age, her name is Quinn.”

Katie nodded. “Actually, yeah, I went to a boarding school up in the mountains. I did know someone named Quinn in school too. She was in my class. Not entirely sure if it would’ve been your sister though.”

“We’re both pretty dead set against it happening again, if that makes you feel any better.” Alaric chuckled a little. “You were! And I appreciated it and tipped you extremely well.”

“Yeah, well if it happens again, I’ll be one of the Davenports not letting you in,” Katherine replied, with a small smirk.

“Oh, yes, but I like it all the same. Venice is wonderful enough in winter, but here it’s different. It’s a new experience.”

“Venice, hm?” she questioned. “I’ve always wanted to go to Venice. I travelled a bit last summer when I wanted to get away from magic and everything, but it was only in the states.”

Mike had just finished his lesson, and he was listening to the piece he was working on in his headphones. He drummed his hands on his thighs as he walked, totally in his own space. He didn’t even notice Kate walking towards him on the path. And then his headphones went flying out of his ears as his phone fell to the floor. “Hey, watch it.” Mike snapped, bending down to pick up his phone. He grabbed some of her things while he was down there, shoving them up at her. “You dropped your music.”

“I see, thanks,” she said, starting to pick some things up herself. She looked at him again, maybe this time a little too long. “Do I know you?” she questioned. “You just look very familiar, but I’m not entirely sure from where.” She stuffed some of her music back into the folder it fell out of, before checking on her violin, though she was sure it was okay, the hard case protecting her fragile instrument.

“Well if it colder here than where you’re from?” Katie questioned.

“Damn, you’re ruining all my plans.” April pouted. “I wanted the solid gold macchiato from that one coffee place in New York Doordashed to me.”

“I get paid minimum wage April, even with a job I can’t pay for that,” Kate replied with a slight laugh.

“I know what Netflix is, I’m not Dad.” Leslie rolled her eyes. “I’ll have to check it out if it’s as good as you think.”

Katie shrugged. “I don’t know, I barely knew what it was before school. I didn’t watch TV a lot before now.”

Katie was on her phone texting one of her sisters. She wasn’t paying attention when she ran into the older boy on the Julliard Campus, making her drop everything in her arms. He looked very familiar, but she didn’t think anyone from Ilvermorny went here, at least not while she was going. “Oh God, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to run into you, I wasn’t paying attention.”

Katherine shrugged. “It fine,” she replied. “A nice break from everything. And you?”
