Weird confession, but I'm so glad that this guy hit on me on my way back from grocery shopping while I was in Paris - because, while nothing happened between us, it was just so nice to sit outside this building on a chilly winter night and talk for a couple of hours. It was so nice to share Paris with someone when I was spending the first few days on my own. It was such a blessing to pray for him and learn from him. It was this whimsical, chance encounter that sounds romantic but it was more spiritual, it felt like, for whatever reason, we were both supposed to be there and meet at that time - these two very different people. And then disappear, never to hear of each other again. Something in me loves that.

There isn’t just one Native American culture. There are hundreds. And there are millions of Native people. And we’re being ignored. We’re being told that we don’t have rights over how we are represented in mainstream America. We are being told that we should ‘get over it’ - but the people who are saying this don’t even know what the issues are. When people know of us only as a ‘costume,’ or something you dress up as for Halloween or for a music video, then you stop thinking of us as people, and this is incredibly dangerous because everyday we fight for the basic human right to live our own lives without outsiders determining our fate or defining our identities.
