Val, prepared as always, pulled the handbook from her desk drawer, flipped to the page regarding rules for patients. “Those are the rules,” she said. “And following them is the first step to make sure people like you. Doing what the staff asks is also a good idea. But I can assure you: your survival is extremely likely. Losing you would be a waste.”
Katie muttered her thanks as she skimmed over the rules, her brow creasing as she read through them. There were a couple of things that jumped out at her, but the woman’s next words weighed heavy on her mind, and she thought it best not to protest. “Do you like me?” She piped up finally, as throughout the exchange she had been unable to tell. “Do you think.. I mean, if I follow all these rules, that other people would like me too?”
