just zaywe supporting his bestie's (dave) drawing skills. naiwari, their new bestie, silently wishes dave would never draw again.
a tiny bit of info for someone who's interested.
dave and zaywe are members of a newly formed (after the 1st pandoran war) "clan", which consists of humans and na'vi who lost their home or family or everything. zaywe didn't lose anything, he just exiled himself from his home cus he's a coward and can't handle the role of the next olo'eyktan. he fastly befriended dave and now they are inseparable. he usually guards him in the woods during dave's explorations and research. (they don't fight, zaywe is very good at running.)
naiwari is a traveler originally from a dangerous jungle full of rivers. she meets with different na'vi clans to learn something new from others. sometimes she stays with them for a while if they let her. this new clan let her of course. she strongly disliked humans before but after not that much.
so what dave is drawing is his new anthro palulukan oc. he's a furry and was commissioning artists back on earth. but now he has to do it himself. he's bad at it but he enjoys the process and the results ofc.
I’m probably swinging a bat at a hornet’s nest here, but it’s been bugging me for long enough I gotta say it (and I will preface that this is not vaguing any one specific person; I’ve seen this multiple separate times): I do think that if you’re going out of your way to make a Na’vi OC or entire fan clan that’s pale skinned, blonde/white-haired, European features, etc you really should maybe stop and think about why you feel comfortable whitewashing the most blatantly Indigenous-coded people I’ve ever seen in a piece of fiction. Like, why is this the path you’re taking? There are so many ways to make a unique-looking Na’vi that are Not This. There are so many ways to do a polar/tundra clan (usually the excuse I see people using as to why their Na’vi is white) that are not whitewashing. I’m sure it can be done in a non-racist way if you’re very careful and thoughtful and making a clan based on, say, the Sámi people or a similar group who often do have pale skin and hair but remain an Indigenous minority group, but most of the time I see it it’s just white Na’vi in clothes based on non-white Indigenous cultures and I just - bluntly, I think people are maybe not thinking the internalized racism of this one through enough. It rings of wanting to play with the fictional aspects of it while still only drawing white people.
Anyway, just - something to think about. Obviously I’m not the almighty authority on the subject - far from it - it’s just something I’ve seen often enough that it feels worth saying something.
fan-clans are so often either whitewashing, racist stereotypes and tropes, or direct, total cultural appropriation--and it is why i, on the whole, do not engage with them anymore.
Regarding the lawsuit, I’d also like to say—and it really shouldn’t need to be said—anyone being racist or mean-spirited toward Kilcher will get blocked and, sincerely, fuck you. You can’t be an Avatar fan and be dismissive, cruel, or in any way bigoted toward Indigenous people—not if you have any brains, at least. The cognitive dissonance in this fandom is already off the charts, in many areas, so let’s not let this be another. Regardless of the outcome of the allegations, Kilcher deserves nothing but respect for being brave enough to face The Mouse and defend her likeness. We should all frankly be really concerned with just how much actors and common folks alike are having their likenesses and privacy stolen these days
Did you hear about the recent lawsuit against James Cameron about his unauthorized use of an indigenous actress's (Q'orianka Kilcher) likeness in Avatar? Just wondering what your thoughts were on it...
I have heard of it. I haven’t read the lawsuit in full, so I’m not in a position to give any fully informed thoughts. I will say, from what I’ve seen, Kilcher at the very least has a right to be upset and deserves reparations for her likeness being used without proper attribution, at any phase of the design process. If the allegations against Cameron are true, it is beyond scummy to not say a word to her all these years, and only speak on it in a random interview nearly two decades later.
On the other hand, I’m reserving judgment until I’ve heard from the other side, including the other artists who oversaw the creation of Neytiri’s design. One thing I don’t agree with at the moment is that Neytiri’s final design is 100% based on Kilcher and that there was no influence taken from Zoe Saldana. There’s a lot of BTS footage from the first Avatar with background on how Neytiri was designed and how Saldana’s likeness was incorporated, and I find that there’s a lot of baseless conjecture going around about how Neytiri “looks nothing like Saldana” which I just disagree with and find a touch unfair. There’s also been images shared comparing Kilcher and Neytiri’s features, but suspiciously little comparison of Saldana herself and Kilcher—as though individuals can’t have features in common…Moreover, I think it will be a tough uphill battle for Kilcher to prove the use of her likeness was “unauthorized” and I’m skeptical of that claim, again assuming she means the final Neytiri design in the film is based solely on her. I am not calling her a liar, I just need more information on that—because as I understand it, the claim is that Cameron used Kilcher as visual inspiration for an early sketch of Neytiri and one of the clay mannequins made early in production. This does not mean, legally speaking, that her claim about the final Neytiri using her likeness without authorization can be substantiated. It will be up to the defense to prove the final version used Saldana’s likeness, not Kilcher’s, and up to Kilcher and her team to prove the opposite. Put simply: that will be hard as effing rocks.
All that said, I do think it is unfortunately pretty likely that this case will be thrown out. It’s nigh impossible to go against The Mouse and win, especially if you’re a little-known person of color. I’m hoping that, if nothing else, it will be settled out of court and Kilcher can get some reparation and closure. Her likeness was allegedly used as the basis for Neytiri, even if later iterations are primarily based on Saldana. She deserves credit and compensation for that and I have nothing but respect for her for standing up for herself against such a giant and litigious corporation, and I am fully on board with any actor protecting the rights of their likeness in the age of deepfaking and AI. Especially BIPOC individuals, who already deal with so much exploitation of their likenesses and cultures (which Avatar is absolutely guilty of, even disregarding Kilcher’s claim).
It does nonetheless make me a little concerned about over-policing artists for taking inspiration from various sources. I really don’t want these artists to be villainized—ultimately, it was Cameron who oversaw Neytiri’s design and signed off on the final product. He deserves the brunt of the ire, not his team. I can’t help but be reminded of the other, earlier lawsuit filed against him alleging Avatar ripped off the artwork of Roger Dean purely because Dean had also drawn floating mountains and colorful dragons before—despite Avatar’s floating mountains being entirely different in their design language, and colorful dragons hardly being a novel concept (and the final ikrans look nothing like Dean’s dragons anyhow).
Basically, I think there’s a careful line to tread between holding creatives accountable for stuff like this while also recognizing that all art is inherently derivative and taking inspiration is part of the design process. I’ll probably read the lawsuit in full at some point (update: currently working through it), for the sake of due diligence, but I do want to remind folks that as it stands we have one side of the story and matters of ethics in art are always pretty complicated, especially in law. I want to be fair to everyone involved, and acknowledge the nuances of the situation, so I hope you understand where I’m coming from, and please don’t take it as a lack of support for Kilcher.
This Native American Heritage Month I want to spread awareness for MMIWG2S crisis, the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirits.
This post has facts, resources to learn more, and includes links with ways to help, although I hope as you read more you realize how much spreading awareness could leave a huge impact as it would create even more help, protections, and resources.
Did you know that indigenous women, girls, and two spirits are murdered and go missing at such high rates that both the USA and Canada have declared it a crisis and epidemic?
In some places they are murdered, assaulted, and go missing at 10x the national average?
The statistics that prove it in the USA:
The National Congress of American Indians - Defending Sovereignty since 1944
And Canada:
Read more on the Assembly of First Nations website here.
May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S in the USA. In Canada it falls on the same day and it's referred to as Red Dress Day.
Red is a sacred color to indigenous peoples. As such is the color we use to raise awareness for our women, girls, and two spirits that have come under harm.
We use both red dresses and a red handprint over the mouth to raise awareness. So if you see these symbols please pay them their proper respect. They are not to be used in cosplay or costumes nor are they to be mocked or appropriated.
You'll also find the phrase "No more stolen sisters" in discussions about MMIW. This is a phrase specifically intended to raise awareness and bring attention to the MMIWG2S crisis and it shouldn't be applied to anyone except indigenous women, girls, and two spirits.
Origin of the movement Missing and Murdered Women and Girls, why wear red, current legal challenges and future hopes. (May 5, 2020)
For Native and Indigenous communities, 'No More Stolen Sisters' calls attention to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
Along with all these facts I wanna ask you to look up infamous cases of MMIW. Look up Savanna Greywind and look up "Search the Landfill." And please check out this link that covers the legal "loophole" that allows tribal women to be assaulted without any hope for their non-native abusers being held accountable.
Let the horror that some native and first nations women go through fuel your desire to become an advocate for the MMIWG2S epidemic. Sit with us in solidarity and acknowledge the scope of the systemic injustices being done against us.

i love neytiri so this is not a hate post or anything but someone in the comments of some post or another said “90% of her scenes are just her crying” and like yeah… yeah
afop is so crazy tho like you’re a cryogenically frozen 18 year old with two decades worth of trauma, abuse, etc, a dead clan, dead sister, probably a shit ton of trust issues, physical and mental scars, hundreds of human murders under their belt, escaped prison MULTIPLE TIMES, but people will deadass ask you to orchestrate a date for them and you do it without any hesitation.
i have a coming-up-on-2,000-word meta post all about neytiri that i can unleash on the world whenever i want so just bear that in mind and stand ready for my arrival
Spider x Kiri doesn’t strike me as incest because that boy was not raised by Neytiri and Jake. that’s like a big part of his character and story… his lack of an actual family.
Him finally being taken in by the Sullies and recognized by Neytiri is much less integrating a new sibling into the family and far more taking in your kids childhood friend/daughters boyfriend because he’s homeless, motherless and his dad fucking sucks.
like yeah he’s part of the family now but in a different way, more similar to the way Jake and Neytiri are family through mating, how Mo’at and Jake are family as mother-in-law and son-in-law, how Grace was “Sa’nok” “mother” to Neytiri and the other school children.
not in the literal “He’s the sully kids sibling now” way.
