the breath comes in slow but escapes too fast and I’m left drenched and clinging to the mast as the storm takes the ship takes the ground takes me and all I can do is swallow the sea but I can’t drink as fast as the water demands the salt burns my lips and eats at my hands my cup long lost and my breath going too here on the deck where the sun’s overdue I watch my breath leave on the tail of the wind that batters the ship and leaves my feet pinned the wetter my flesh and the fuller my mouth means the warmer it feels when we stop sailing south
