vision of the future (tw: death)
i fear my vision of the future
my phone screen on a good day.
i wake and squint at my blurry hands
blink until they are no longer stinging and dry,
i try to imagine my future but i canât.
i was fourteen and planning a funeral,
my grandmother died the year before
i wanted flowers like hers, annual.
planning your own funeral ruins your core.
you remember the conversations like flashbacks.
telling your mother you want daisies,
asking her to keep the casket closed
put you in your favorite clothes
even if they arenât very pretty.
(you were in your wannabe emo phase
so your mother asks if you really
think the MCR shirt and ripped jeans
are appropriate for being lowered into a grave.
you assure her it is âtotally
mom if iâm dying you gotta do
and sometimes my chest feels so tight
i wonder if the doctor really fixed me
or if iâm still suffocating.
maybe i was lowered into the ground
maybe this is why i find myself unable to make any sound.
and that is why my vision of the future is only dread.
