FINAL READING LOG "Safe Haven" by Nicholas Sparks October 11, 2014
Our fifth and final book is "Safe Haven" by Nicholas Sparks. Although I'm not a fan of Romance novels, Nicholas Sparks is an exception.
DISCUSSION DIRECTOR (Karen Jane Embedia)
1. Katie and Alex fall in love very quickly. What draws them together? Have you ever fallen in love so quickly? If not, do you think it’s possible?
The thing that made Alex fell in love to Katie is her love and affection for his children. I’ve been in love (I guess?) but it took me a long time to realize that it’s really love. I think someone could not fall in love so quickly because love is not just what you feel when you see someone that fits your standard. In my own perspective, you can say that you love someone when you are able to understand every detail about that certain person.
2. On their first date, Alex says to Katie: “Everyone has a past, but that’s just it – it’s in the past. You can learn from it, but you can’t change it.” Do you agree with him? Is it possible to truly put the past behind you?
Yes. Past is just a past and we cannot bring it back. In Katie’s case, her past haunts her everytime, but because of Alex’s love, she felt at ease. She had found her Safe haven in Alex’s arms.
3. Alex is a widower who has had to raise two children on his own. How has he dealt with his grief in the years since his wife passed away? Have you experienced grief of this magnitude in your own life? How did you handle it?
Alex just accepted the fact that her wife is not coming back anymore. Although it was very hard for him, he still managed to move on with his life until he met Katie. I cannot relate with this one because so far, I haven’t experienced things like that.
4. When Katie tells Alex about Kevin she says: “I hate him, but I hate myself, too.” Why does she feel this way? How does Katie change as she spends more and more time in Southport? How is she different by the end of the book?
I guess Katie hated herself in a way that she married the wrong man. She really loved Kevin and she was a good wife then, but Kevin thought Katie has another man and that she is not contented with what Kevin and she had until it came to a point where Kevin tortured her to death. Katie escaped and found herself in Southport in Alex’s arms. They fell in love with each other and Katie became stronger and was able to surpass her fears with Alex’s help.
Why do you think the author chose to write a portion of the book from Kevin’s perspective. Do you have any sympathy for Kevin? Why or why not?
I guess Nicholas Sparks wrote Kevin’s perspective in a portion of the book because he did not want people to hate Kevin. He wanted us to understand that Kevin was just insane and obsessed with Katie and he did not want her to leave him.
REACTION: Some of the questions were copied from the net. I mean, internet is an advantage because all the information we want is there, but she should have gotten the ideas only and made her own questions.
PASSAGE PICKER (Edgar Fernandez)
The story entitled “Safe Heaven” is an interesting story. I really had mix emotions while I was reading the entire story. I sometimes laugh that even my cousin mocks at me seeing me laughing with an unknown reason. All I can say is that, this story is really one of the best stories of the author named Nicholas Sparks. A teenager like me who had this “innocence” thing when it comes to love might laugh with some “kilig factors”. While I was reading the books, I was amazed by some of the scenes in the story. And I have some collections of Quotes and Passages from the story of course.
And here are some passages that I have gotten from the story:
When you live your life looking over your shoulder, how can you see what is up ahead?
This means that we should not only focus in just one thing. We should also try to look at other things that we have not seen yet. We will end up being ignorant if we do such things. Just like in the story, Katie lived a life like that. She is very cautious, scared and conflicted. If we will have life like that, our life would probably become so boring and not worth living. The lesson is, we should not be afraid to try new things. We should not only look over our shoulders. Instead, let us look things ahead of us.
And that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.
I really love this passage from the story. We, all dreamed of finding our true love someday somehow- a love that will never fade and will remain even stronger. No one here on earth is crazy enough to hate the feelings of being loved by someone especially when that someone is your crush or someone you like. Sometimes, our hearts are pounding like galloping horses because we knew someone on earth loves us. There is a saying about love that I could relate to further explain my side. “Love conquers all”, sounds familiar right? Whatever trials or hardships you might face, if you love each other, then you don’t have the reason to surrender. Perhaps, you will be challenge. However, sometimes love cause us too much pain. And we feel like “Ouch!”. Being hurt is just a normal catastrophe when we fall in love. But if we will look at the other side, which is the brighter one, Love is the only Safe haven.
REACTION: I love Edgar's interpretation of each passages because I noticed that he can really relate to the book.
CONNECTOR (Karla Kristine Palmes)
Safe Haven(Connector)
I was really amazed with this book. For me this book is telling about sacrificing for the one you love even though it really hurts you. Even though she died already she never forget her responsibility for her family. She really loves his husband, but still she finds a girl that can take care and love her family the same way she love her family. And for me it’s really a brave thing to do.
I can connect this book to Everyday by David Levithan. This book is also sacrificing for the person you love. In this he/she doesn’t know who he/she is. He/she just woke up every day with a different body, every day he/she is different person and barrowing a body from a stranger. But there was a time that he/she fell in love with a girl. Every day he/she is trying her/his best just to see that girl. But then again, he/she realize that it’s not right that he/she will fall in love because it’s difficult and not normal with his/her situation. So, what he/she did is, he/she find a guy who is normal and who can love the girl the same way he/she love the girl.
For me sacrificing for the one you love is a very brave thing to do if you know that it best thing to do for them.
REFLECTION: I think it would be better if the connector had given farther explanations, but her works is good :)
CHARACTER CAPTAIN (Erika Mae Paglinawan)
Katie/Erin- The main character in the book. She starts as a beautiful woman with long blonde hair and the perfect body that lives with her abusive husband named Kevin. Erin finally leaves him making her way to the quaint little town of Southport, North Carolina. With a new identity as Katie, she rents a little beat up cottage for the time being. Little does she know but she soon meets a man named Alex with two kids who she falls madly in love with. She also meets a woman named Jo who moves in next door and becomes her truest best friend. Alex-The owner of the town grocery store who is a single father of two kids because his wife Carly died. He meets Katie and falls in love with her not just because of her eye-catching beauty but because of how she interacts and behaves toward his children. Alex also risks his life to save Katie when her abusive, drunk husband comes to town to take Katie with him. Jo/Carly- Jo is a woman who moves in next to Katie and becomes Katie's truest friend in town. They talk over coffee and wine and Katie enjoys spending time with Jo. Little does Katie know but that Jo is actually Carly who is Alex's deceased wife. She is a spirit or figment of imagination that is in Katie's life to help her find Alex because Carly only wants the best for her husband and children. She knows that Alex has fallen in love with Katie and Katie needs Alex and his children in her life as well. Kevin- Katie's husband who is a police detective for Boston. After Katie leaves him because of his abusive ways ,Kevin feels he cannot live without her and no one else should have her if he doesn't. Kevin uses his detective skills and resources to track her down and try to set a building on fire that she is in. He is also in an intense brawl with Alex until Katie intervenes ending the problem forever. Kristen- Alex's daughter who builds a bond with Katie early on in the book as she colors pictures for her and plays dolls with her. Kristen also goes to Katie when she needs to be comforted. Josh- Alex's son who enjoys spending a lot of time outdoors and who develops a connection with Katie.
REFLECTION: I appreciated the character captain's effort in making this characterization, but she should have put a lot more description of the characters.

REFLECTION: At first, I was really shocked upon knowing that I would be the literary artist like, "what am I gonna do?" But then again, my friend advised me to edit photos.. Since I do not know how to make o poem, or to draw, this, editing of photo, became my last resort. I chose those kind of pictures because for me, Bicycle represents hope to Katie.

SUMMARIZER (JINGLE EMEJAS)
Safe Haven
Katie, a mysterious 27-year-old woman, moves to Southport, North Carolina. She maintains her privacy, starts working at a restaurant named Ivan's, and lives a life without involving herself in anything social. After getting a job as a waitress and buying a small house on the edge of town, Katie befriends her next door neighbor, Jo and meets Alex, the manager of a local convenience store, and his two children, Kristen and Josh. Alex's wife tragically died of cancer a few years. Katie has a husband before named Kevin, but Katie is a battered-wife, Alex promised to protect her and love her deeply. Alex and Katie go on a date often. When Kevin located the new place where Katie stays, he arrived there and had a fight with Katie, Kevin attacks Alex with a crowbar but Katie killed her ex-husband with a gun.
After recovering from that encounter with Kevin, everything is now okay. Alex handed a letter to Katie, she wanted to call her friend Jo for them to both read the letter, but she discovered that there was no house where Jo lives, she was startled and begin to think that it was only her imagination. The letter she received from Alex is a letter from his wife named Carly. Carly’s friends often call her Jo. Katie realizes that wasn’t her imagination, but she was Carly the wife of Jo that wad dead already. In reading the letter, Carly wrote to the woman with whom her husband would fall in love, requesting her, Katie, to take care of Alex and the children.
This book by Nicholas Sparks was adopted into a movie and the characters were portrayed by Juliane Hough (Katie) and Josh Duhamel (Alex) and many others. When my groupmates told me that this is going to be our final book, I was happy since I have already seen its movie . :D
BOOK 4 "Divergent" by Veronica Roth October 11, 2014
Our fourth book is entitled "Divergent" by Veronica Roth. I think I had an advantage among my group mates because I have already watched its movie so I found it easier to read its book.
The first role which is the DISCUSSION DIRECTOR was made by Noelyn Gay Duran. Here is her work:
1. If our real society would implement the same rules in the book of Divergent and supposed you are born dauntless and confuse of what you really want to be? Will you choose to stay the same or change the rules instead?
If ever I will be in that situation, I prefer to remain dauntless because in their factions, not only your skills will be developed, but you will also become wise in making decisions.
2. If being divergent is that dangerous, if you are Beatrice, would you still fight for what you believe is right and fair? Or continue to follow the rules for the safety of everyone?
Yes, because I am a lover of justice and I hate unequal treatment and favoritisms.
3. Do you think the book is futuristic enough emphasizing the factions held in the society within? Is it realistic and if yes, how will you be able to decide to where you belong? Based on integrity? Or conscience?
It is obvious that the book is not realistic and it may seem impossible today, but, if I will decide what faction to choose, I would base it according to integrity because somehow, conscience leads you to the wrong direction.
4. In one of the scenes in the book where Tris made the choice to jump in a building and where she took her life in risk, if you were Tris, could you volunteer to do the same, assuming that you have the phobia in heights? Will you trust only the circumstances?
Yes, since I chose that one to be my destiny, I should stand for it.
5. If you were Tobias and was controlled by the organization to kill Tris, what emotion will still be domineering if based on the reality, love? Conscience? Or the medicine taken?
I think its love because love is the most powerful thing in the world. If you love something or someone, you will also feel that they became part of your life and they are your responsibility.
REACTION: I like how the discussion director formulated her questions. Simple yet understandable.
The next role will be passage picker and the one to justify that role is KAREN JANE EMBEDIA. Here is her work:
“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”
Four stated this line, and I strongly agree to him because as what you can see there’s no way you can escape from your fears. Fears will be there hiding until you will die but on the other side of the story we can control it as what four stated. We cannot avoid it but we can be free from it. And Tris is trying her best to make way on how to solve each situation without imagining that the thing does not exist, so she’s trying her best to keep the role as a Dauntless.
"Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up. I've seen it. It's fascinating.
Four, aside from the fact that he himself is a bit scary here, what he teaches Tris about fear is just as important. He's showing her that fear can make her better, more alive in some ways.
“My fear is being with him. I have been wary of affection all my life, but I didn't know how deep that wariness went. But this obstacle doesn't feel the same as the others. It is a different kind of fear—nervous panic rather than blind terror.”
In this, part of Tris's fear is wrapped up with something that she wants but doesn't quite trust. Tris doesn't have the same fear when it comes to jumping off buildings, for instance.
REACTION: Karen had justified her role by explaining the passages that was taken from the book. Thumbs up for that! :D
The next role that was designated to ERIKA MAE PAGLINAWAN is connector. Her work is reflected below.
Divergent is the debut novel of American novelist Veronica Roth. It is a young-adult dystopian novel set in the so-called Divergent Universe, that features a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. The novel follows Beatrice "Tris" Prior as she explores her identity within a society that defines its citizens by their social and personality-related affiliation with five different factions. Underlying the action and dystopian focused main plot is a romantic subplot between Tris and one of her instructors in the Dauntless faction, nicknamed Four.
I can compare this book to other young adult books such as The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner because of its similar themes and target audience. In particular, the novel explores the themes common to young adult fiction, such as adult authority and the transition from childhood to maturity, as well as broader motifs, such as the place of violence and social structures within a post-apocalyptic society. Its major plot device, the division of society into personality types, is one used in other science fiction works. Beyond its literary context, Roth's open declaration of her religion as a Christian has brought commentary from Christian communities both endorsing and challenging the novel.
The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago. Roth has indicated that she did not originally intend to use Chicago as the setting: "I wrote the rough draft and I felt like it needed a more grounded sense of place, and I looked at the city I had described, which is all these trains constantly moving, and this lake marsh, and these rivers. And I realized that it was Chicago already, and it was just because that's the city I've known and loved the longest.
REACTION: I think the connector gave more focus on the description of the novel's plot and its author rather than connecting it either to her own experience or to some other books and movies out there.
The next role, character captain is to be justified by yours truly, Katrina Ann Marie Caro.
Character Captain
Beatrice “Tris” Prior
She is the protagonist of the story. She is Strong- willed and hates showing weakness. Beatrice plays a dynamic personality and it can obviously be seen as the plot goes on. At first, she does not know why she is different, but at the latter part of the book, she learned to use that difference as a boon which made her stand out among all other characters.
Direct Characterization:
She has a narrow face, wide, round eyes, and a long, thin nose. She has a dull blond hair.
[This was stated in chapter one of the book, wherein her mother cut her hair and she grabbed the opportunity to sneak a look at her reflection in the mirror. This statement strongly supports the description above.]
“I sneak a look at my reflection when she isn’t paying attention—not for the sake of vanity, but out of curiosity. In my reflection, I see a narrow face, wide, round eyes, and a long, thin nose—I still look like a little girl, though sometime in the last few months I turned sixteen. . .”
Indirect Characterization:
Dauntless people call her stiff since she is firm in her decisions and she showed bravery during their initiation when she volunteered to jump at the hole without knowing what’s in it.
Caleb Prior
He is Beatrice’s brother, an abnegation who turned to be erudite after the choosing ceremony. Based on my observation, he portrayed the round type of personality because at first, he was into his family (in the abnegation) and he keeps on telling Tris that in every decision that they will make, they should first consider them (rephrased), but when he chose to be an erudite, his perception was changed and all he wanted to do was to follow the erudite even if it means destroying his first faction, the abnegation. Even until the end I still believe that Caleb was brainwashed by the erudite that’s why he always wants to follow them. In the end part of the book, Caleb changed his mind and he realized that the antagonists are the erudite and he consolidated with his sister, Tris, and her company in battling against the erudite.
Direct Characterization:
It was directly stated in the book that Caleb has a dark hair and hooked nose, green eyes and dimpled cheeks. He is also selfless. He is handsome, I guess. (hehehe)
Here are some passages that I got from the book to further justify the above statements:
“We don’t look alike. He has my father’s dark hair and hooked nose and my mother’s green eyes and dimpled cheeks. When he was younger, that collection of features looked strange, but now it suits him. If he wasn’t Abnegation, I’m sure the girls at school would stare at him. He also inherited my mother’s talent for selflessness.”- TRIS
Indirect Characterization:
For me, Caleb values their family so much and it can be seen when he told Tris to “Think about their family” before deciding on what faction to chose. He is also matured in a sense that even if Tris is older than him, his thoughts were like years ahead of Tris’ and it can be proven by these statements (it was spoken by Tris):
“. . . He moves confidently toward the exit. I don’t need to wish him luck or assure him that he shouldn’t be nervous. He knows where he belongs, and as far as I know, he always has. My earliest memory of him is from when we were four years old. He scolded me for not giving my jump rope to a little girl on the playground who didn’t have anything to play with. He doesn’t lecture me often anymore, but I have his look of disapproval memorized. . .”
Tobias “Four” Eaton
He played a round type of personality because at first, he is very firm and strict just like what a dauntless leader should be. He did not really care about Tris at first because he was more focused on his being a leader, but, when he discovered that Tris is also divergent, his attention was diverted to her and he was the one who helped Tris in concealing her ability, being a divergent.
Direct Characterization:
He is a young man having spare upper lip and full lower lip. He has a well body-built. He is wise, strong-willed and he fears that people might find out that he is also a divergent. He is one of the protagonists in the story, he is the trainer of the newly initiated dauntless and he became Tris’ love interest. He was abandoned by his mother when he was a child and he grew up with his father, Marcus, whom Four hated for being so abusive to him.
REFLECTION: I only chose these three characters, Tris, Caleb, and Four since the plot focused much to them and they really got my attention.
Next role will be the literary artist. It will be justified by Edgar Fernandez.
What should I do?
In which way should I take?
In deciding, I’m a bit worried
If I choose this where shall it brings me?
Where shall it lead?
Life is a choice and I pondered
Looking things around me and there have seen
Amazing things to explore and wander
For a man like me who belongs those normal teenagers.
My mind is full of if’s and doubts
Cannot decide, cannot think of better insights
And then, later, I have realized
My life is boring if lived this way
My mind says you do like this,
My heart then pound and opposes
What should I do now?
Should I live life in a way like this?
What should I do?
I am afraid of failing too
But, to decide is the thing I have to
I just pray that good results will follow
REFLECTION: I like how our literary artist easily makes a poem. (Making a poem will give me a hard time)
Another role will be the vocabulary enhancer and it will be justified by Jingle Emejas.

The last role will be summarizer and the one who was assigned for that work is Karla Kaye Palmes.
Divergent
There are five faction(faction can identify where do you belong): Dauntless, they are the brave, they are the protector of the people and they love adventures. Abnegation, they are selfless, they share everything that they have and they are the only faction who has the courage to help the factionless. Candor, they are honest, a lot of them are Judges and Lawyers. Amity the peaceful one, they are the farmers and they are very kind people. Lastly, Erudite they are the smartest or intelligent among the faction, a lot of them are professors and researchers.
You have to take the examination to know what faction you belong, but when Beatrice took her examination, the result was really shocking, she was a Divergent. Being a Divergent is really dangerous, if you are one of the Divergent, and others know about it may cause to death. But Beatrice chose to be a Dauntless even though her family is Abnegation because she thought she’s not selfless enough to be Abnegation. But during her training being a Dauntless, she is really trying her best hiding being a Divergent and some love story going on between her and Tobias. But she also discover that Erudite is trying to overthrow the Abnegation, and the Erudite is needing the help from the Dauntless.
GENERALIZATION: Every work will be successful if everyone in your group would cooperate. I think it's a job well done for all of us since we all exerted our efforts.
Book 3 "The Giver" by Lois Lowry October 11, 2014
Our third book is entitled “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. This book was referred to us by our philosophy professor and he told us that its plot is really great. Its ending is a cliff hanger and I was like “I should read its next book!” The saddest part is that I’m still finding ways in getting its next book. I can’t wait to watch its movie! :D
To make this blog successful, everyone was given different roles. The first role is “Discussion Director” which was done by ERIKA MAE PAGLINAWAN.
1. In The Giver, each family has two parents, a son, and a daughter. The relationships are not biological but are developed through observation and a careful handling of personality. In our own society, the makeup of family is under discussion. How are families defined? Are families the foundations of a society, or are they continually open for new definitions?
We always believe that Family is the basic unit of the society and without it, society would not come about. I believe that that definition of family would not and should not be altered since Filipinos are Family-oriented. If they will change the definition of family, the essence of being a Filipino will be gone and will not be valued.
2. In Jonas’s community, every person and his or her experience are precisely the same. The climate is controlled, and competition has been eliminated in favor of a community in which everyone works only for the common good. What advantages might “Sameness” yield for contemporary communities? Is the loss of diversity worthwhile?
“No other person is exactly the same as you are. Everyone is unique and uniqueness brings color to the world.”
There are so many advantages that sameness might give us. For example, it will lessen chaos in our community. Since everyone enjoys the same rights and possesses the same things, (even the number of family members is the same), no other person will envy the other. When chaos is not present, harmony, peace, and order will take place. On the other hand, diversity is also important. Although sameness might promote rapport, we should also consider the fact that in diversity, people will be able to develop the real essence of a community. We should always remember that diversity adds color to our community and that what makes it.
3. Underneath the placid calm of Jonas’s society lies a very orderly and inexorable system of euthanasia, practiced on the very young who do not conform, the elderly, and those whose errors threaten the stability of the community. What are the disadvantages and benefits of a community that accepts such a vision of euthanasia?
Euthanasia, the painless killing of human being, was being practiced in Jonas’ community and they called it the ceremony of “release”. It was obviously stated in the book that they are doing that to eradicate future problems that they might encounter in the near future. Their rulers think that when they exterminate those types of people, they will be able to continue rapport amongst people and harmony will be maintained.
4. Why is the relationship between Jonas and The Giver dangerous, and what does this danger suggest about the nature of love?
The relationship between Jonas and the Giver is very dangerous since they were the only ones who were capable of owning people’s memories, feelings, emotions and they were the only ones who know what was really happening in their community. When Jonas received the memory of “love” that was also the time when his mind was opened and he said that “He wanted that feeling” and he wanted that people will also be able to experience that and because of that, he began to break their rules until the time that he left their community.
5. The ending of The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways. Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory—one of the most beautiful that The Giver transmitted to him—as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into a dreamlike coma in the snow. Or perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him. In her acceptance speech for the Newbery Medal, Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct. What evidence supports each interpretation?
I think the interpretation of the book’s ending could be both in Jonas’ imagination or it could be real. I can say that it was only an imagination because in the first place, Jonas had received emotions which were given by the Giver and he and Gabriel was relying to it to survive. On the other hand, we can also infer that what he experienced was real since he started losing all memories that were given to him by the giver because he had used them all. Jonas also stated in the book that even if he lost all the memories given to him by hte Giver, he can start all over again and build his own memories.
6. There are groups in the United States today that actively seek to maintain an identity outside the mainstream culture: the Amish, the Mennonites, Native American tribes, and the Hasidic Jewish community. What benefits do these groups expect from defining themselves as “other”? What are the disadvantages? How does the mainstream culture put pressure on such groups?
Basing from the internet, the advantages of preserving cultures is people who are doing these are holding on to their morals and are preserving their culture and identities while its disadvantages are they can be labelled as intolerant. (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1840928-there-are-groups-in-the-united-states-today-that-actively-seek-to-mainta?comment=99347540#comment_99347540)
7. Lois Lowry helps create an alternate world by having the community use words in a special way. Though that world stresses what it calls "precision of language," in fact it is built upon language that is not precise but deliberately clouds meaning. What is the danger of such misleading language?
I guess the danger of that misleading language is that it tolerates deception and it makes people ignorant of what is really happening in their community.
8. Examine the ways in which Jonas’s community uses euphemism to distance itself from the reality of "Release." How does our own society use euphemism to distance us from such realities as aging and death, bodily functions, and political activities? What are the benefits and disadvantages of such uses of language?
I think the use of euphemisms can help lessen intimidation to the people who are involved and I guess it can lessen the pain people feel.
REACTION: At first, I was really impressed by the discussion director’s work and it gave me a hard time to answer but when I decided to surf the net for the basis of my answers, I found out that she just copied the questions and I was so upset. I guess she should have put a lot more effort in making questions rather than just copying from the web.
The next role is the “passage picker” and it was accomplished by NOELYN GAY DURAN. Below is her work.
"He hunched his shoulders and tried to make himself smaller in the seat. He wanted to disappear, to fade away, not to exist. He didn't dare to turn and find his parents in the crowd. He couldn't bear to see their faces darkened with shame. Jonas bowed his head and searched through his mind. What had he done wrong?" Lois Lowry, The Giver, Ch. 7
Sometimes no matter how we chose the right thing and do the right decision, we will be seen as traitor and we will be judged for being wrong. By simply, standing what we believed to be the right thing usually brings us to the midst of real danger and even our own family will sometimes forsake us. The challenged is how we will be able to surpass those judgments and still fight for the truth and right. Thus, the story strengthened my above philosophy in life, Jonas fought for what he believe to be the goodness for everyone.
"There was just a moment when things weren't quite the same, weren't quite as they had always been through the long friendship." - Lois Lowry, The Giver, Ch. 9
Everyone has their own considered true friends. Categories might be put; short and long term friends. Along with the friendship, time will tests the real meaning of friendship. It will either make the friendship go brighter or blurrier. People do change and as people change, some moments fade away and some memories with some other friends might replace those moments. Jonas and Ash has been friends since they were born. They have created memoirs worth keeping. When Jonas chose to explore the real world beyond their known world, trust of Ash for Jonas was put into test and he proved that Jonas deserved to be trusted.
"He was free to enjoy the breathless glee that overwhelmed him: the speed, the clear cold air, the total silence, the feeling of balance and excitement and peace." - Lois Lowry, The Giver, Ch. 11
Life is wonderful, life is gorgeous and life does not necessarily mean happiness alone, it is embedded with fear, Violence, hurt, pain, sorrow and etc. As we are able to enjoy the essence of joy and love, it conjugates the fact that we were born to make sense of what we feel. Though, we might feel sorrow, love stands as the main solution that could make life as colorful as we have.
REACTION: I commend the passage picker for she had justified her role and she was able to explain the passages well.
The next part, connector, was done by our groupmate EDGAR FERNANDEZ and his work is reflected below.
The book is very nice. I was being touched and somehow became emotional with some of the scenes in the story. I can relate to the story because some of the events there are true to life. The story had somehow made me realize that it is also very important for us to give value with the simple things we have in our lives. It is not about contentment, because we are only human and it is undeniable to admit that we are always aiming for something more than the things we have. We want more. And we reach to a point that we are already neglecting those things that did not satisfy us. We cannot satisfy ourselves. We are not contented. Hence, the story just taught me the lesson that I should give value and treasure every simple thing I had in life. I need to give importance to it. I can connect the story “The giver” to the allegory of the cave, in our philosophy subject. As far as I could remember, we have tackled about the prisoners who were imprisoned inside the cave. We have also watched the movie “The Croods” which was also related to the topic allegory of the cave. Just like the events in the story, we need to go out of our own shelves. We should not put limits in our deeds or actions, as long as it is not bad and cannot cause harm to others. It is good to go out in our own shelves but we should not forget or neglect the things we have learned when we are still on our own shelves. We should not neglect the things we have, and we have learned before, just because we have learned a new one. We should learn to treasure each and every thing that comes in our hands.
REACTION: Upon reading the connector's work, I observed that he could really relate to the book and he had presented his work well.
Next is the CHARACTER CAPTAIN and Karen Embedia will give justice to this role.
Character capt.
Jonas - The eleven-year-old protagonist of The Giver. Sensitive and intelligent, with strange powers of perception that he doesn’t understand, Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory for his community when he turns twelve. Even before his training, Jonas is unusually thoughtful, expresses great concern for his friends and family, and thinks it would be nice to be closer to other people. After his training begins, Jonas’s universe widens dramatically. His new awareness of strong emotions, beautiful colors, and great suffering makes him extremely passionate about the world around him and the welfare of the people he loves, though on the whole he remains level-headed and thoughtful.
The Giver - The old man known in the community as the Receiver of Memory. The Giver has held the community’s collective memory for many years and uses his wisdom to help the Committee of Elders make important decisions, even though he is racked by the pain his memories give him and believes that perhaps those memories belong in the minds of everyone in the community.
Jonas’s father - A mild-mannered, tenderhearted Nurturer who works with infants. He is very sweet with his two children. He enjoys his job and takes it very seriously, constantly trying to nurture children who will stay alive until the Ceremony of Names. However, even if he is attached to a child, he will release it if that seems to be the best decision. He has an affectionate, playful relationship with his two children, usually referring to them by silly nicknames, and he likes playing childish games with the children he nurtures.
Jonas’s mother - A practical, pleasant woman with an important position at the Department of Justice. Jonas’s mother takes her work seriously, hoping to help people who break rules see the error of their ways. She frequently gives Jonas advice about the worries and fears he faces as he grows up.
Lily - Jonas’s seven-year-old sister. She is a chatterbox and does not know quite when to keep her mouth shut, but she is also extremely practical and well-informed for a little girl.
Gabriel - The newchild that Jonas’s family cares for at night. He is sweet and adorable during the day, but has trouble sleeping at night unless Jonas puts him to sleep with some memories. He and Jonas become very close.
Asher - Jonas’s best friend. Asher is a fun-loving, hasty boy who usually speaks too fast, mixing up his words to the exasperation of his teachers and Jonas. He is assigned the position of Assistant Director of Recreation.
Fiona - Another of Jonas’s friends. She has red hair, which only Jonas can see, and works as a Caretaker in the House of the Old. She is mild-mannered and patient. Jonas’s first sexual stirrings come in the form of an erotic dream about Fiona.
Larissa - A woman living in the House of the Old. Jonas shares pleasant conversation with her while he gives her a bath during his volunteer hours. Like many inhabitants of the House of the Old, she enjoys gossip and looks forward to her release.
The Chief Elder - The elected leader of Jonas’s community. She to shows genuine affection for all of the children at the Ceremony of Twelve, knowing of their names and an anecdote about each one.
REACTION: I like Karen's work because by just reading it, you will be able to determine the characteristics of the characters. I think it would be better if she characterized them according to their development, forms, etc.
The next role, to be justified by JINGLE EMEJAS, is the literary artist. Here is her work.
THE GIVER
This picture represents the story “The Giver”. I can compare the allegory of the cave to the story “The Giver” because the theory of Plato is concern with the human he claimed that knowledge gained through the senses is no more than opinion and that, in order to have real knowledge, we must gain it through philosophical reasoning. This claim of Plato is connected to ‘The Giver” because this story talks about a society that is full of isolation but everything is complete. They can’t feel pain, hunger, sufferings and any disaster that causes life to be nostalgic but as Jonas undergoes his training he learns that just as there is no pain without memory, there is no also true happiness.
REACTION: The drawing is not that colorful and eye-catching but her explanation is good and it is meaningful.
The next role will be Vocabulary Enhancer. It will be justified by Karla Kristine Palmes.
REACTION: I put the words into a table because the vocabulary enhancer did not put it into a table.
The Last role will be summarizer and I was the one who was assigned in this role.
“From great suffering comes great solution . . . Community”
It all started after Jonas had undergone the ceremony of twelve and was designated to be the “receiver” of people’s memories. At first, he used to believe that he was living in a perfect community; an ideal community in which everything is fair, well-organized, things were put into place, and all the things they needed were provided by the government. Becoming a receiver never crossed his mind even once. He hadn’t got any idea of what a receiver may be since they were deprived to be curious about things around them.
Jonas’ life had changed when he became the receiver; he started telling lies to his parents, he was allowed to skip his morning medicines (in which everyone was required to take every morning), he began to realize things, he even learned that everything that surrounds them has colors, and his curiosity arose. As days passed by, Jonas acquired different memories given by an old man called “The Giver”. Because of those memories, reality unravelled itself and it lead Jonas in finding answers about what’s, why’s, and how’s.
Generally, I can consider this work better than our previous works. Maybe because we have learned our mistakes and we have evaluated our flaws from the previous works.
BOOK 2 "The Fault in our Stars" by John Green October 11, 2014
Our second book for our second reading log is “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. Actually, I was the one who encouraged them to read this book because I’ve heard rumors that this book is really great and it became the talk of the town since it was adopted into a movie. At first, I found it boring because the book’s genre is not my type (I love Sci fictions! *HUNGER GAMES AND DIVERGENT :D ), but as I went along its pages, I learned to appreciate it.
The one assigned to be the DISCUSSION DIRECTOR was JINGLE EMEJAS. Her questions together with my answers were typewritten below:
1. A dying girl meets a hot boy. This is the love story of Hazel and Gus. We became so much interested in the love story of these two cancer patients. As a reader, we’re looking forward on how the title of the story affects or relates to the life of these teens. If you are given a chance change the title of the story, will you change it? Is there any connection between the title and the main characters of the story?
If I were to alter the title of the story, it would be “This Kind of Fate”. After collaborating our ideas, my roommates (at the dormitory) and I came up with this one. When you spare a glance at the title, you can infer two things: it’s either the characters of the story will have a happy ending, or the other way around. The fault in our stars is a funny yet heartbreaking story that makes every teen believe that there is hope even in your greatest downfall. For me, the title says that no matter how imperfect our life may be and no matter how hard the situations are, there is still hope. Just like the characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus, even if they feel hopeless sometimes because of their disease, they still find comfort in each other’s arms.
2. It was mentioned in the story that hazel is so stinkin’ obsessed to the book "An Imperial Affliction", she also influenced Gus in reading the novel. What does An Imperial Affliction have to do with Hazel's own life? How does the book change her?
For me, the main reason why Hazel was really into the story “An Imperial Affliction” because she can relate to the main character of that book, Ana, who is also struggling from cancer. Usually, she compares herself to Ana and she sometimes thinks that she is luckier than her because she had lived twice as Ana did like she used to live a normal life, go on shopping, or bonding with friends.
3. As we have witnessed the love story of the two teenagers, we can infer the difference of their relationship to other teens in this generation. What does Hazel learn from her relationship to Augustus? Is it a deeper feeling than most teenager's first love, or does it just feel that way because they have such limited time?
Sometimes, it takes time for you to realize how much you love a person. In the story, Hazel and Gus started as friends but little by little, as they go together, they started to realize the sudden pounding of their hearts. As you go along the pages of the book, you can really say that what they felt was not just a pseudo-love, but true love. When you fall in love with someone, you are willing to sacrifice everything for him/her. Just like what Gus did, he sacrificed his chance of living just to fulfill Hazel’s dying wish. I guess almost everyone assumed that Hazel will be the first one to pass away but then suddenly, it turned to be Augustus and it really shocked me.
4. Hazel and Gus met Peter Van Houten, the author of "An Imperial Affliction", as they've met him, it doesn't exactly go as what they have planned because at first Peter is a mean drunk and doesn't answer the questions of Hazel. Does Van Houten actually care about Hazel and Augustus? Why does he feel the need to go to Gus' funeral at the end?
Yes, Van Houten cares for Hazel and Gus. It’s just that Van Houten was so upset and can not move on from what happened to his only daughter, but later did he realize that he cared for them that is why, he went to Augustus’ burial.
5. The story ended in a tragic way because of Augustus' death. If you are to write the same concept of the story, will you follow the way John Green ended the story, or will you have your own twist of the story? As a teenager, how would it feel if the novel continues the romance of Hazel and Augustus?
If I were to follow the same concept of the story, I prefer to have an ending in which they will both die. I do not know what’s running in my head that I suddenly had that kind of thought. It’s a bit tragic but I know it will be fair for both of the characters (Am I so mean? Hehe). On the other hand, if both of them had lived, I will be very happy because my own definition of the title, “The Fault in Our Stars” that was stated in my answers in the first question, will be fulfilled.
REACTION: I commend the discussion director for constructing these mind-bugging questions. It really made me pause and reflect for a while to come up with those answers.
I, KATRINA ANN MARIE CARO, was assigned as the PASSAGE PICKER of our second book. Here is my work:
There will come a time, when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this”
Hazel stated this during her first meeting with Augustus at the Literal Heart of Jesus’ Circle. Although this sounds negative, I still agree with it because what she said was true. Nothing is permanent in this world and there will come a time that everything will vanish away and there will be no one left to remember all these things that are present today.
You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do its killing.”Augustus
Augustus said this to hazel because Hazel thought that he was going to smoke, but to her surprise, he just put the cigarette in his mouth without lighting it. I like this statement because I believe that it has something deeper to convey. I guess it means that although danger is present, it’s up to you to handle it, whether you’ll let this destroy your life or not.
In the darkest days, the Lord puts the best people in your life- Augustus’ dad
I strongly agree with this statement and I have nothing else to say but this, “God always give us the best, so if we experience being in the dark, we should not worry and should not blame others or something. Instead, we should keep our faith stronger and wait for God’s answer.
Without pain, how could we know joy?
This one is very common but still, I really like this because it leaves something in me like, how would I know that this is life if I haven’t experienced suffering?
Sometimes people don’t understand the promises they’re making when they make them- hazel
I strongly agree with this. Before, I always tell promises to other people but I always break it and then I realized that if we are going to make promises, we should put it to our hearts and if we are not sure of doing something for someone, we should not assure something to them because even that single word can cause great chaos.
You are so busy being you that you have no idea how utterly unprecedented you are. (Augustus Waters to Hazel)
If I were Hazel, I will be flattered because of this statement because for me, it shows that Augustus really sees something deep within hazel’s eyes. I guess its message is somewhat similar to One Direction’s song, “You don’t know you’re Beautiful. That’s what makes you beautiful.”
No Matter how hard you kick, no matter how high you get, you can’t go all the way around. (Swing Set)
For me, this quotation tells us that even if we strive harder, we can’t still get what we wanted because of discontentment. That’s the essence of a human being, we do all that we can to obtain something, and when we had that something, we exert additional effort to reach beyond that something.
The weird thing about houses is that they almost always look like nothing is happening inside of them, even though they contain most of our lives. (by /hazel, when she and her mother were infront of Augustus’ house)
“I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
Honestly, I felt butterflies in my stomach when I read this one and I was like, “Oh, it’s so good to be inlove.” I can’t move on with this even after reading the book. I can’t help myself but to shriek and then my roommates were like, “What’s the matter with you?” It seems like I was the one who has been told by Augustus and I felt very “kilig”. In that statement, I sensed that Augustus really felt something for Hazel and he is serious. Maybe, he stated that because his condition is getting worse (without Hazel’s knowledge). Despite that truth, I still agree with what He did. At least he had proved how much he loves Hazel before he passed away.
‘Pain is like fabric: The stronger it is, the more it’s worth.’ (Peter Van Houten to Hazel)
This was uttered by Peter VanHouten when he was inside Hazel’s car (I mean, Hazel’s mom’s car) in chapter 23 and it caught my attention. This comparison made my brain wander everywhere and I was thinking, is it true? I guess the one who can answer this is also the one who suffered enough pain (physically or emotionally). Maybe its worth in terms of “you always remember a thing because that gave you a traumatic experience”, but I think worth is not the right term for it, it’s more like “remember”.
REACTION: I really exerted my effort in picking these passages from the book and I guess I had fulfilled my role as the passage picker since I explained the passages and I also included the characters who stated them and in what scene did they appear. I did not have any further explanation to some of the passages because the statements speak its meaning. I mean, you suddenly grasp its meaning by just reading the passage.
The next role will be connector and the one who was assigned for this is NOELYN DURAN. She connected “The Fault in our Stars” to the Korean series “A Liter of Tears”. Here’s her work:
The moment I read “The Fault in our Stars”, I remembered the movie “A Liter of Tears” back when I’m still a high school student. The similarities of the two stories were; they are both cancer disease evolving story and they are both a bit tragic. We often imagine cancer victims as weak, hopeless, pitiful and etc. but the fact is they are not that different as common individual ought to live his life. Though they might have lived shorter than the healthy one, however, how they prefer to be treated is the same with the normal people. They wanted to live life as if they belong to the community and not a special people who would walk into a public place with eyes starring to them, they would love to be treated as if they could also do whatever they wanted and they wished they could love longer as healthy people do. Nevertheless, they wanted to be remembered not because they have fought a good fight against their disease but because they have lived a simple and normal life like any other did.
The tragic fact about life is that we, human are classified accordingly; From rich to poor, smart to not, influential to common ones and sick to healthy. Treated and mistreated according to the society’s position. Hazel and Augustus life is the same. They were treated properly to the extent of torturing them. Cancer put their lives in hell but still they were able to make the most out of the short time they had. Thus, it only shows that love will never be separated regardless of what, who, where, why and how.
REACTION: Connecting is one of the toughest roles in this literature circle since you are not only relating a particular book to another, but you also have to give strong justification about how were they related to each other. I want to give our connector a good remarks.
KARLA KAYE PALMES was assigned to be the character captain of our group. Here’s her output.
Hazel Grace Lancaster
Hazel Grace is diagnosed with a thyroid cancer, and you can really say that she’s a very brave girl. She is afraid to deal with people, or to have friends because she knows that she won’t last. And one of the best thing about Hazel Grace is she’s not self pitying but instead she’s trying her best just to survive. She’s trying her best to survive because she’s afraid to hurt her mother. But when she met Augustus, she opened her heart and she’s not afraid to open her heart for Augustus.
Augustus Waters
Augustus is a very handsome guy, but guess what? He is diagnosed with osteosarcoma, and he also lost his right foot. By the first look, Hazel Grace already fell for him. But this guy is very jolly and he knows how to give joy to other people, especially to Hazel and his best friend Isaac. But one day he didn’t know that his cancer is back, and lit just like a Christmas light. But Augustus loves doing metaphoric act, just like acting to put some cigarette in his mouth when he can feel his fears and uncertainty. And for him, as a human being he wants to help other people or doing some extraordinary acts.
Hazel’s Mother (Mrs. Lancaster)
I really salute this woman. As a mother she is really brave enough or strong enough to be Hazel’s mom. She is doing her best just to give Hazel a very fulfilling life and she doesn’t know how to give up.
Isaac
Isaac is a loyal friend to Gus and Hazel and he’s always there to Augustus until the very end. At first, he can’t accept the fact that he is a blind person and his girlfriend Monica left him that made him angry. But with the help of Gus and Hazel and being brave, little by little he accepted that he has no eyesight.
Peter Van Houten
Peter is Hazel’s favorite writer. He’s an alcoholic guy and rude. But even though he says mean things to to Hazel and Gus, deep inside he cares for them. Peter has a reason being cruel, because his own daughter also died from cancer and that’s the reason why he’s being like that. But in the end he answered the big question being asked by Hazel Grace.
REACTION: The characterization is good but I guess the character captain should have added more definition of the characters.
The next role will be character captain and the one who was assigned for this was KAREN JANE EMBEDIA. She made a poem about the book. Printed below was her output:
Love never dies
Late in the winter of her seventeenth year
Hazel Grace deceased and depressed
Waiting to end her distress
Thinking that there is no special in herself
Missing a part in herself
A war that’s not over yet
But still hoping to overcome it
Coz there is someone waiting, the name is death.
To the heart of Jesus, she went
In the circle of trust, she sat
Trying to figure out each other
Wondering why we’re here.
That is simple because we’re sick
Thinking that it is needless
To have friends and faith
Coz death is always the end.
But in the circle she met
A one-eyed boy
He has a friend, Gus
A one-legged boy
Gus, she destined to love
A cigarette landed in your mouth
It’s a metaphor you say
You put the killing thing in your mouth.
An imperial affliction, she read
And so he did.
Obsessed and curious, they became
To know the book how it ends.
To Amsterdam, they went
Using the wish, they wished
The Grumpy old man, they met
With disappointment, they left.
Gus lost illness came again,
Hazel lost grief possessed her again,
Coming back to an old pain again,
Still, continuing their romance again.
Gus died.
She hope, she had died,
But their love still lives
And never dies.
REACTION: I appreciated the effort of our literary artist in making this poem and I think she had justified her role, but I don’t know why I’m still craving for some intense emotion from this work (hehe).
To help us enrich our lexicon, our VOCABULARY ENHANCER, EDGAR FERNANDEZ, picked some unfamiliar words from the book then gives definition to it. Here is his work:
REACTION: The vocabulary enhancer had justified his role by giving definitions to some of the unfamiliar words that were found in the book, but he just typed it so to make his work more pleasing to the eyes, I put those words into a table.
The Last part would be the Summary and the one who was assigned for this is ERIKA MAE PAGLINAWAN. Here is her work:
The Fault in Our Stars is a novel by author John Green. The story follows the main character, Hazel Grace Lancaster, as she battles cancer. Not only is Hazel trying to live the normal life of a 16-year-old girl, but she is also struggling with what it will be like for her parents after she dies. While Hazel attends a church support group for cancer survivors, she meets a boy that is one year older than her, Augustus Waters. While Augustus had a type of cancer that causes him to lose his leg and wear a prosthetic, it also has a survival rate that is much higher than Hazel's death sentence.
From the first day that Hazel meets Augustus, the two are practically inseparable. The basis of their relationship ends up being Hazel's favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. She requires Augustus to read it and in turn, he requires her to read the book that is the basis of his favorite video game. Hazel relates to the character in her favorite book, Anna, because Anna has a rare blood cancer. Augustus and Hazel bond over the book because both of them of a burning desire to find out how the story ends because the author stops the book before providing conclusion on what happens to each of the characters.
Augustus joins Hazel's pursuit of the book's author, Peter Van Houten, to provide the answers that they need. Augustus even uses a wish foundation to fly him and Hazel to Amsterdam, where the author lives, to talk with him in person. While Hazel is the one that is doomed to die, Augustus ends up telling Hazel that at his recent scan, the doctors discovered that his entire body is filled with cancer. Hazel spends the last months of Augustus's life caring for him and loving him.
GENERALIZATION: I appreciate everyone’s effort in making this reading log. Each had done their part and contributed their knowledge. The only problem is that Everyone should have submitted it before the deadline.
still hoping that someone would sing a song for me :)
(18+)
why is it okay for girls to demand a guy to be over 6ft, have defined jawlines, rock hard abs, and blue eyes but as soon as a guy say something that they would like a girl to have, we get attacked for having unrealistic standard of beauty for woman.
I think it is perfectly fine to have preferences of your potential significant others, but it’s ridiculous that guys get attacked for doing the same thing that girls do.
Stop the double standards.
