BOOT CAMP C
BOOT CAMP C was developed during the interdisciplinary Craft At The Cutting Edge Artist Residency at the Alberta College of Art + Design Calgary, Canada, Sept.–Oct. 2016. Within the six–week residency Steiger confronted herself with a new country, a new city, new people, new sounds, tastes and smells. She transformed these experiences and conversations, her feelings and perceptions into six wearable suits, a series of found + made objects as well as a performance piece which contains a 20 minutes video and sound installation. For the transformation process Steiger collaborated with ACAD’s fibre department and used different textile techniques, like printing, embroidery and weaving. Since she is very interested in every day phenomena and textile as a medium, Steiger especially focused on Canadian uniforms as well as work and sport wear. As part of her research she went to thrift stores and flee markets to find already worn cloths made in Canada or representing Canada. This found textile footage was merged with ready made textiles to communicate her personal approach on Canada to the Canadian audience. Within her performance Steiger confronted the Canadian community with her sensitive and personal view on the new experienced everyday life phenomena and dress codes made in Calgary, Canada.
