KAYLA KATHRYN LOWE: 1996 - 2016.
“On occasion.” He smirked, giving her a small shrug at the idea. Blake tried to pinpoint what exactly it was that all of this would mean. He knew he should think of every consequence, but his mind was drawing blank at the feeling of her lips against his. The ripples in the water moved when they did, and nothing was still anymore, not nearly as quiet as it had been moments before. There was something comfortable about it, even though it had so much potential to be awkward. He felt much more assured when she moved closer to him, but he was most definitely not calm. He was quite the opposite with their tongues meeting together and the two pressed together the way they were.
Kayla was never like this. Maybe it was that wild feeling of living and doing something silly and crazy for fun, but she was quickly pressing more and more against Blake. It was Blake. She had thought about kissing him hundreds of times, and the real deal was even better. Her tongue kept wrapping against his own, sweetly sucking on it before pulling her mouth away altogether, instead pressing open mouthed, panted kisses against his neck. She didn’t want him to pull away, or for them to stop- who knows when they’d even get the chance to kiss again. And this was all blissfully thoughtless, nothing else. And that was the way Kayla liked it.
there’s a first time for everything
She chewed on her bottom lip, giggling at Kayla’s question. “Of course! That’s why I’m inviting you. I want to see you out there with the rest of us,” she grinned. She knew that Kayla kept mostly to herself, but if she chose to stay-in this time, it wouldn’t be for lack of effort on Dahlia’s part. “Yes!” she squealed, giving the other girl a quick hug to celebrate. She learned that the blond’s name was Kyle while one of his other friend’s (the one with green eyes) was named Bas. A nickname for Sebastian, she was told. They seemed rather harmless, if pushy, but they didn’t bother her as much as the one hovering over Kayla did. He looked like one of those guys that delighted in making a conquest out of a girl and she would be dead, cold and decaying in the ground before she let someone try and take advantage of Kayla. She had been planning on shooing them away when Kayla’s suitor–Ruben, was it?–gave her an irritating smirk that had her snapping her fingers in his face from whatever perverted daydream he was having. “Hey! Romeo. Didn’t you hear her? She said she’s not interested,” Dahlia paused to wrap an arm around Kayla’s waist and holding her close to her side. “My girlfriend and I would like to be left alone now,” Lia said, her smile long-gone from her face as she stared Ruben down. Kyle and Bas laughed and started teasing their friend. “Prove it,” Ruben challenged, jutting his chin out as he crossed his arms. Clearly, he either didn’t think she was serious or figured she would chicken out. With an angry huff, the brunette shifted on to her knees so she could learn forward enough to push Ruben back a bit before cradling Kayla’s face in her hands and pressing her lips gently to the other girl’s, earning a whole new round of whoops and hollers.
“Well. If you’re going, it can’t be half bad, right?” Kayla nodded along, wondering how and when she had started feeling so comfortable around Dahlia. It came easily. At the hug, Kayla was never really much of a hugger, so she patted Dahlia back on the shoulder, unsure of what else she was supposed to do, just like usual. Kayla had long since stopped listening to everything exiting from the boy’s mouths. They reminded her of Emmett too much. Pushy, annoying, never taking no for an answer, thinking they were hot as hell. It annoyed Kayla. Dahlia clicking in his face had Kayla letting out a laugh, that she turned into a cough, ducking her head. The arm around her waist was warm and comfortable, and Kayla leaned into it. Maybe the mojito was getting to her brain quickly, but she giggled into the crook of Dahlia’s neck at the endearing term. Girlfriend. She had never been called that before. She nodded, straightening her features. “Agreed. Sorry boys, she’s all mine.” She cocked her eyebrows back at them. As Ruben challenged them, Kayla opened her mouth to argue and say they didn’t have to prove shit to these horny boys- but then Dahlia was turning her head, and lips were pressing against hers. Kayla’s eyes snapped open in surprise, and she almost pulled away, especially at all the whooping and hollering- but Dahlia was an excellent kisser, if Kayla was being honest. She tasted minty from the mojito, but also slightly fruity, and her lips were so soft. Kayla’s eyes flickered closed finally, and she relaxed right into the kiss, her mouth pushing back against Dahlia’s- the cheers getting louder, but Kayla paid them no mind, her fingers gently entangling in the other’s brunette hair.
‘if one more fucking student from my own school asks me for directions to the beach or if i’ve ever done hula dancing before- i’m going to lose it. i may be half hawaiian and definitely look it but i haven’t been here in years. jesus christ, way to put a label on someone.’
“People really have been doing that?”
The tears were covering her cheeks now as Kayla spoke, her eyes stayed glued to the floor, in fear that if she glanced in the girls direction she would loose complete control. “I ran… I just left him there to die and I ran…” She stopped now, the tears in her eyes blocking her vision. “He was awake and I - — I told him this was for all the pain he caused me… For taking away the little being that I would of - — I would of given everything to them you know?” She was looking at Kayla now, the hand that was free reaching up to dry the tears that fell. “But then when he was gone I felt like I was gone with him? He’s all I’ve known for so long… I don’t know who I am without him.”
Kayla was awful when people cried. She hated it. She knew now was not the time for her emotions though. This girl clearly needed somebody. Her heart ached listening to everything Mimi said. She had never thought pain could be worse then what she had gone through with her cancer- but maybe this... This was worse. “You can be anybody you want to be now.” Kayla told her, eyes following the girl’s every movement. “He doesn’t hold you back. He doesn’t control you. You had to do what you had to do. Don’t mistake it for anything else.”
“I never thought there was anyone more pessimistic than me.” Blake shook his head and laughed. He was more negative about life than he normally let on, that was for sure. Blake was no longer bothered by the silence once he kissed her. For a moment he doubted she’d reciprocate, that she was simply going to push him away, and maybe he’d been reading it all wrong. But no, he’d been reading it right. Here she was, kissing him, and it was right. His hand traveled to her waist, though he was reluctant to draw her closer or bring her any further. He didn’t want to push, but it was almost as if they weren’t quite close enough.
“You’re pessimistic? Really?” She questioned, not believing that for even a moment. The kiss was one that would stay on Kayla’s mind for awhile. She knew that to be true. She’d think about it over and over again, and not know what it meant, for her, or for Blake, but right now- it didn’t matter too much. She gently nudged his mouth open, her tongue tasting the chlorine on his lips, but something else distinctly Blake-like as well. His hand on her waist had her shiver, her entire body automatically moving closer and closer to him, both of them on the edge of the pool now. She had never been too good with this, or knowing what to do, but with Blake’s hand on her waist, even under the water she felt electric. She wanted more, although she didn’t know of what yet as she swirled her tongue to meet his.
Blake smiled triumphantly at her response. “Finally. So you’re not entirely pessimistic, huh?” The boy liked this side of Kayla that he was bringing out, not that he didn’t like her before. But this side of her was different and made him different as well, something he could get used to. Blake was much too aware of her moving closer to him, water rippling around them with every movement. He stood still in the water, as still as he truly could be. “B’s gonna kill me,” he muttered, pausing for a moment, realizing they were just close enough. “Oh well.”
“I am, but i try to simmer it down when i’m around you.” She said. The silence between them was strangely loud. Kayla was licking her lips, the air between them feeling heavy, like it could break at any moment. As he mentioned her brother, she lifted an eyebrow up at him, although she doubted he could see it in the dark. “What does Bran-” She begun to ask, but then- Blake was kissing her, and she couldn’t help but startle slightly in surprise, taking a moment before fully kissing him back. Her mouth curved against his, lips tasting his own just like she had thought about for months. She forgot about the water, and that technically they were both naked, she sank completely into the kiss, her hand coming up to his neck, holding him in place because she wasn’t ready to let up just yet.
“I’ve noticed,” he nodded, though he didn’t really think so of course. He liked the only two of them that he knew, and that was good enough for him. “Well, if you don’t have a pool, you find one. And if there’s drought you better hope there’s air conditioning. Or just move.” He shrugged, not really sure what else he could say to defend it. He just loved summer. He pushed his arms through the water, the cold of it still chilling his skin, but he didn’t care. Though when Kayla came closer, the goosebumps rose once more. He took a deep breath, propping himself on the ledge of the pool. “Yeah? And I could thank you for joining me.”
She laughed at his attempts to keep defending the sacred summer. “Okay, okay. Even i can admit i’m having a good time in Hawaii. So i won’t comment on the heat.” She admitted defeat, which was quite unlike her. Kayla didn’t really know what she was trying to do, just that she felt more comfortable when Blake was closer. She drifted closer again, the water quiet and still save for the movements of their bodies and breathing. “You’re the one who invited me.” She said, quietly. “So again. Thank you.”
there’s a first time for everything
“That would be the mint leaves,” she joked, watching the look of joy that painted Kayla’s countenance. Dahlia leaned in, her eyes glimmering mischievously as her friend debated the pros and cons of attending the bonfire. “C’mon! Do it. It’s perfect weather. Pretty fire. Music. Booze. Hot guys and girls. Everything you could ever want,” she said in an attempt to persuade her. She took a long sip of her drink before her attention was inadvertently directed elsewhere. The three boys that gathered around them were very good-looking, seemingly tourists themselves looking for a fling while on vacation. When Kayla moved closer, Dahlia rest a hand on her thigh in an effort to reassure her while her eyes remained on the guys in front of them. “What can I do for you?” Lia asked, quirking an eyebrow at them. One boy – a blond – moved to hover over Lia’s shoulder and she turned her head to keep an eye on him. “Oh, nothin’. You ladies were looking a bit lonely s’all,” the blond said with a shrug. With a smirk painting her lips, she scoffed. “Well, handsome, I can assure you that that is not the case. We were actually having a girls’ day that you are unfortunately interrupted,” Dahlia said with a smile so sweet that it did not fit the write-off she was giving him.
Kayla laughed, slightly embarrassed at what a newbie she seemed like. Dahlia’s convincing worked pretty well, but Kayla only had one question left- “Will you be there?” She asked, slightly hopefully. “Because with a sales pitch like that, how can i say no?” It did sound like fun, and wasn’t that what Kayla was here for? To live? Have fun? The three guys had Kayla tensing up, worried about how she looked or how to act now. All the comfort she had felt from being around Dahlia had almost immediately disappeared. Kayla bit her tongue to keep from shooting out her usual sarcastic reply. She shifted closer to Dahlia again, glad for the hand on her thigh, and for Dahlia shooting them down. Kayla met eyes with the same guy again, he was still looking at her. Kayla arched an eyebrow up at him, as if challenging him- he grinned, taking a few steps closer to Kayla as Dahlia talked to the other boys. “Hey.” He greeted. “I’m Ruben.” Kayla let her inner bitch come out to play, unimpressed. “Hey.” She replied. “I’m not interested.” But that seemed to only amuse the guy further, causing him to laugh, and for Kayla to roll her eyes, annoyed with them for ruining girls-time.
“Now I know for sure, you truly are a monster.” Blake pressed his lips together as if he were truly disappointed in her. “No, if you’re cold, you stay cold. It’s like frozen over Hell. If you’re hot, you just take a dip in the water, cool off, and everything’s gonna be okay.” He grinned. The boy was nearly blushing himself now, though he agreed to this to begin with. This was his best friend’s sister, but did he truly have to know anything? The thought definitely made Blake feel bad, but he didn’t back out. The boy stripped of his shorts, jumping into the water shortly after her, enjoying the more reckless side of Kayla, and even the more reckless side of himself. “This wasn’t such a bad idea,” he decided once he surfaced above the water.
“All Lowe’s are.” She agreed easily, still grinning over at him. She picked up some of her hair, tying it up loosely, not wanting the curls to get in her way. “Frozen over Hell?” She repeated, even more so amused now. “But what if you don’t have a pool? Or there’s a drought?” She would never understand the temptation of summer to people. The water was incredibly cold, and it woke Kayla up completely. She felt alive. She felt amazing. As she surfaced up from the water, she saw Blake had joined. “Not too bad at all. I could almost thank you, Blake.” She teased, wading over to him slightly, her breathing coming out shallower.
“Nope. Still no. That one sounds worse. Can’t you pick something painless? You’re a monster with all that.” The boy shook his head, but he was still laughing about it. “I thought you might say that. But the cold is worse, you can’t move in that either because you have to wear so much clothing.” He argued back, shrugging his shoulders at her. Her reaction to his words weren’t surprising, he’d know all too well that he’d make her blush. “Sorry, can’t help that.” He raised his brows at her, waiting for her idea to surface. A smirk settled on his face. “You can’t tell me you’ve never been skinny dipping?” His eyes glanced over the water. “You know what? I am. I’m totally game.” The boy nodded, moving to the edge of the pool.
“Oh, i wouldn’t want it to be painless. I’d want you to feel every second of it.” She shot him a cheery grin at that. “The cold is perfect. You can always get warmer, but can you really get colder without using all the electricity in the country?” She questioned. She was still blushing, cursing herself inwardly for it, for being such putty in his hands. “Nope.” She popped her ‘p’. “Always wanted to though.” She added, looking at the water for a long moment, entranced by it. She beamed as he agreed, her bikini top coming off, and it felt strangely liberating. She felt giggly, and almost like she was floating. “That’s the spirit!” She laughed, breathless, bending over to throw off the underwear as well, before jumping full-body into the water with a shriek.
“That’d be a painful death. I really don’t want to die of inhalation of sand. No thanks, pick another one please.” He shook his head, glancing to the side at her. “Well then I don’t see what’s to worry about, I’m clearly not scary,” he remarked, raising a single brow. “Oh, I love it. Better than Canada any day. Bet you just love it, huh?” He chuckled. Blake bit down on his bottom lip in attempt to keep himself quiet, but there was something different about him tonight. He was more open, flirtier than usual. “Best part of our day too,” he mumbled with a smirk.
“Uhhh. Okay. What if... I chop up your body and then throw it into the bonfire that’s happening?” She asked, after thinking for a moment. She glanced over at him. No, he wasn’t scar, but how he made Kayla feel was. “Yes... The sweltering heat. The inability to move because it’s so hot and uncomfortable. Perfect.” She replied dryly. She went bright red, biting her lip as she grinned at his words, shaking her head at him teasingly. “Don’t be such a boy.” She teased. The pool was indeed empty, and maybe it was the inner Kayla coming out to play, but she couldn’t help it. “You know what i’ve always wanted to do?” She asked, turning to Blake as they stood by the edge of the still water. Her hands reached up to untie her bikini top. “Skinny dip. This is the one and only time i’ll actually have courage to do it. You game?”
“Well as long as it looks like an accident. What are you gonna do, drown me?” He gave her a lopsided grin. “It’s hardly dangerous. It’s a swimming pool, Kay, nothing can getcha.” He chuckled. “Maybe.” The boy cocked an eyebrow at her, teasing effortlessly. He didn’t even argue when she took his shirt from his hands, he only began the short trek to the pool. “Will I? That’s preferable, those things are a pain, you know. I really do feel bad that girls almost always have to wear them.” A grin was permanently plastered across his face.
“Maybe i’d bury you in the sand. Then nobody would find your body, at least not for a while.” She remarked, eyes on his lips, his smile. “It’s not just the swimming pool i’m worried about.” Kayla shot back easily. She fell into step with him “How’re you liking hot and sweaty Hawaii?” She asked, pulling a face at his next words, “Bra’s are the worst. They’re so uncomfortable. Best part of the day is when you can take them off.” She paused for a moment, an idea forming in her brain but not too sure if she should say it just yet.
“I’d like to see you try,” the boy winked at her, not at all effected by her threat. It was an empty threat, he thought to himself. He shifted his arms from being folded over his chest to his hands resting on his hips, looking at the girl in front of him. “Doubt there’s anyone in the pool anyways. It’s getting pretty late.” He ran a hand through his mop of black hair. “Well, luckily, that can quite easily be fixed. Just don’t tell the president, he might take my right to wear shirts away if he finds out.” With ease, the boy pulled his shirt over his head. “See, now we can go.”
“I could take you. I’d make it look like an accident.” She teased. She relaxed at the mention of nobody else being in the pool, nodding. “That does reassure me. And convince me to go. Night time swimming sounds dangerous but fun.” She laughed gently at his words, watching him take off his shirt easily, before snatching it away with her hands, feeling the soft material. “Good. You’ll be keeping it off for a while. Let’s go.” She said it all with more confidence then she had.
“Well, I’m clothed currently, so it can’t be that,” Blake looked down his own chest, though he was clad in a cut off t-shirt. He couldn’t seem to wipe the smirk off of his face. He was getting somewhere, and even though it could eventually get him into trouble, he couldn’t currently bring himself to care. “Well, maybe sometimes. But other times, there’s definitely some fun there.” Blake’s eyes connected with hers, even when she dropped her towel. It took him a moment to look over her, and when he did, there was no staring. He was more gazing momentarily, before he lifted his eyes back to her. “You know, I do feel pretty lucky. Does this mean you’re agreeing to my offer?”
She laughed, hugging herself for a moment. She hesitated briefly, before nodding. “Fine. Swimming. But if you tell anyone i had even an ounce of fun, i will destroy you.” She raised an eyebrow at him. She was glad he didn’t question or ask about the scars. His eyes connecting with hers had her breath hitching for a moment, and a blush colouring her cheeks. “But right now i’m more naked then you, and i think that’s against the law. Of whoever the president or mayor or prime minister of Hawaii is. I didn’t make the rules” She shrugged.
