Story time:
Two 17 y/o girls go to school together. They start to have feelings for each other. Itâs exciting but also really scary. Theyâre both closeted but one of them, James, is more ok with her queerness. The other one, Betty, is more afraid. She has a very strict single mom (her dad left). She has a harder time coming to terms with it and falls pray to compulsive heterosexuality more often, etc.
James and Betty develop a very ~intimate~ friendship, where it becomes clear that they have feelings for each other, maybe they kiss etc. but the point is that theyâre falling in love. They play it cool at school, texting each other to come meet in hidden secret places, playing âhide and seekâ. On the weekends they slip away to get drunk together and just hang out walking around the neighborhood, finding little secret ways to touch each other. James makes Betty feel really special, like no boys/men have made her feel before (including her own father).
Shortly before the summer, there is prom. James is more of an outcast in school, and sheâs not super comfortable with these events that are so gendered, so she doesnât really feel super comfortable at prom. Meanwhile Betty, who is more ~popular~ has many guys sort of after her. James and Betty both go alone under the pretense of meeting up as friends. Some boy asks Betty to dance, and sheâs really nervous about meeting James in such a public social event. Sheâs confused and scared and before she knows it sheâs dancing with him. James sees this, and itâs kind of the last straw for her. She tries to be very patient with Betty not being as comfortable with her queerness, but seeing her dancing with some boy when they were supposed to meet there was really hurtful. She leaves, very upset, and summer starts.
James goes to spend some time in a beach town with her family or something for the summer. James meets another girl, letâs call her X, who is clearly into James. This is refreshing for James, coming from a sort of relationship with Betty where Betty was so secretive and filled James with doubts. Sheâs heartbroken over this situation, half feeling like maybe Betty never really liked her as much as she liked Betty. Because of that, she entertains Xâs advances, eventually giving in to them. They go to the beach together, and âglass closetâ a lot more, though X still canât write her name on Jamesâs back in sunscreen or anything like that. They meet behind the mall to make out, and have sleepovers pretending to be just friends. Itâs a lot of fun and X makes James feel less wrong for being queer all the time, but still all she can think about is Betty. With Betty it was real, it was intimate, and she misses her.Â
Summer is over, James breaks it off with X because she canât stop thinking about Betty and wants to chase her again and make things right. But, another girl, Inez, saw James and X together and told Betty. Now Betty is super hurt, because she doesnât understand why James would do that to her, seeing as from her point of view she has been very serious about James and gone really out of her comfort zone for her. Betty avoids James at school, switches classes so they donât have to be in the same room, and tries to leave this all behind. Meanwhile James tries to ~ accidentally ~ run into Betty, skateboarding past her house, etc. It doesnât work.
Eventually James finds out Betty is having a party at her house. She wasnât invited of course but she canât take it anymore and for the weeks prior she practices what sheâll say when she crashes it: sheâll say she knows where it all went wrong, the misunderstanding with the prom dance, the hurt, sheâll say it was just a summer fling, that didnât mean anything. âI donât know anything except that I miss youâ. She wonders if Betty will believe her or if sheâll tell her to fuck off. She plays it over and over in her head, including one last time when sheâs standing in front of Bettyâs door, wearing the cardigan she left at her house. Betty opens the door. James spills out her guts, asks for a kiss, ready to come out in front of everyone and throw it all to shit. Ready to get in her car, make out when they stop at red lights, and be together.
And there you have it: cardigan + betty + august, the Taylor Swift folklore teenage love triangle makes the most sense as a lesbian story.Â
Taylor has literally been like:
maybe reputationâs themes of love in secret and secret moments no one knows about and stolen stares and pining for someone gorgeous will convince them. no?
okay maybe loverâs crystal skies, rainbows eeeverywhere, gay pride parades, gaylor park, marrying your childhood friend, and stepping into daylight motifs would work. no? that didnât do it?
fine. hereâs an album about childhood love, about loving a girl with braids who has to hide in closets and a girl named betty who I just want to kiss in the garden in front of her stupid friends. how about now? do you get it yet?
dwoht, cruel summer and peace supremacy

You know the greatest films of all time were never made
And if my wishes came true, it wouldâve been you
You meet some woman on the internet and take her home
It wouldâve been fun if you wouldâve been the one

Chase two girls, lose the one
I knew youâd linger like a tattoo kiss
I knew youâd come back to me

THIS FULL SONG
And though I canât recall your face, I still got love for you, your braids like a pattern
And I think you should come live with me, and we can be pirates, then you won't have to cry, or hide in the closet
And though I can't recall your face, I still got love for you, pack your dolls and a sweater
august
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets, August sipped away like a bottle of wine, 'cause you were never mine
I remember thinking I had you
illicit affairs
Leave the perfume on the shelf that you picked out just for him, so you leave no trace behind
You showed me colors you know I can't see with anyone else
You taught me a secret language I can't speak with anyone else

THE ENTIRE SONG JUST GO LISTEN
Betty, I won't make assumptions about why you switched your homeroom, but I think it's 'cause ofâ me
Betty,â one time Iâ was riding on my skateboard when Iâ passed your house. It's like I couldn't breathe
Would you have me? Would you want me? ... Or lead me to the garden? In the garden, would you trust me?
Slept next to her, but I dreamt of you all summer long
Will you have me? Will you love me? Will you kiss me on the porch
peace
All these people think loveâs for show, but I would die for you in secret. The devilâs in the details but youâve got a friend in me
family that I chose
Iâd give you my sunshine, give you my best
taylor swift said âso I sneak out to the garden to see you we keep quiet cause weâre dead if they knewâ and âmarry me juliet you never have to be alone i love you and thatâs all i really knowâ and âi fell in love with a careless manâs careful daughterâ and âbaby i know places we wonât be foundâ and âi loved you in spite of deep fears that the world would divide usâ and âi would fall from grace just to touch your faceâ and âi donât want you like a best friendâ and âif we get burned, at least we were electrifiedâ and â(betty) i showed up at your party will you have me? will you love me? will you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends?â and âall these people think loveâs for show but i would die for you in secretâ and âthen you wonât have to cry or hide in the closet and just like a folk song our love will be passed onâ and im not supposed to have lesbian feelings about it?
so this is why they were wearing the same clothes

Taylor Swift - False God
Track 5: Delicate, YNTCD, and other connections
In the You Need to Calm Down music video, Hayley Kiyoko scores a bullseye on the number 5, which we are linking to Track 5 on Lover. However, if this is a clue to Loverâs track 5, or reputationâs track 5, remains to be seen.
Delicate was track 5 on reputation, and Delicate is our LGBTQ+ coming out anthem that Taylor specifically dedicated to the community and represented pride flag dresses while performing the song on tour, and even giving her first ever pride speech before performing Delicate in Chicago on June 2nd, 2018. On Taylorâs recent Entertainment Weekly cover where she teased easter eggs for her 7th album, she wore a pin that says âTrack 5.âÂ
At the end of the Delicate music video, the last video of the reputation era, we see Taylor dancing in the rain, heading to a bar where she meets the unknown lover who passed her a note in the beginning of the video. Before Taylor goes into the bar, we see a mysterious shot of a car in the upper righthand corner of the frame:
The car was digitally edited into the above shot.Â
Look familiar? itâs eerily similar to a Ford Thunderbird, the car used in the kaylor Vogue shoot:
In the beginning of the You Need to Calm Down video, we see Taylor set a trailer on fire, and she leaves the trailer carrying a daisy with her (we all know what the daisy means). Many people think this trailer is the one from the vogue shoot, but thanks to this excellent post, we see the trailer from the vogue shoot is elsewhere in the music video:
The âkaylor trailerâ in YNTCD is the location of the LGBTQ+ community being unfazed as protesters scream in their faces. As stated in the post linked, the trailer is an Airstream. Who confirmed that the YNTCD trailer Taylor is lying in front of while ignoring the hate from homophobic protestors is actually an Airstream?
To further connect Delicate (a song dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community and the delicacy of coming out) to YNTCD, at the end of the Delicate video, Taylor goes into the Golden Gopher and has this âItâs You!â look on her face when she finds the lover she is looking for:
At the end of YNTCD, Taylor is searching for someone in the same way we see her searching in Delicate. She spots Katy and has her, âItâs You!â moment:
While Taylor and Katy have their sweet embrace, we still flash back to images of the protesters who are looking at Taylor and Katy, still screaming at them that homosexuality is a sin. This is occurring WHILE Taylor and Katy are slowly embracing and looking at each other lovingly!!!
Back to Track 5. In the Delicate video, Taylor is seen at the subway station with the words âTrack 5âł written in graffiti behind her. Three days after the Delicate video came out, Karlie posted a photo of her at the subway, with the number five, asking, âYou looking at me?â
The âTrack 5âł pin on Taylorâs Entertainment Weekly cover is identical to the aesthetic from the Delicate video:
This has me thinking that the 5 bullseye in YNTCD has less to do with Loverâs track 5, but more to do with DELICATE. After all, who shot the bullseye?
My tl did something 2
