- While some believe she’s referencing “shade” as in “being disrespectful”

I thought this line could be referencing being in the closet through the tree motif. As in no matter how “shaded” someone’s sexuality is, being in the closet doesn’t take away from their queerness.

that’s thrown, I mean the kind under

where a tree has grown’

- She’s asking her lover to sit quietly under a “tree” with her. She’s asking her lover to sit peacefully with her in the “closet” and keep their love hidden.

She could also be referencing

Tree Paine*, her publicist who has the resources to keep their love hidden/secret. She’s reassuring her lover they don’t have to worry, they’re protected.

Tree Paine* - Taylor’s publicist,

(who’s name is literally TREE) is also a metaphorical “closet” for Taylor.

Tree keeps the real Taylor hidden, she sets the narrative the media pushes.

She protects Taylor’s public image.
