When the dust settles, it will be easy.

There will be long moments of existing on the same couch, every bit of their bodies touching they can manage without their friends cracking jokes about it. Passion that feels like coming home, and gentleness, exciting and foreign, but familiar too.

Study sessions with casual touches that linger with intent. Date nights and unspoken needs for hugs freely given. Smiles and laughter, the language of their love.

A tiny apartment on a third floor walk up. Getting lost on a hiking trail. Nearly arrested for indecent exposure in a cave near that hiking trail.

A wedding in the fall where everything goes wrong but the vows. A honeymoon in the city, an anniversary in the country. A new house and champagne on the porch, bare foot and grinning while their friends break in the pool. Playoff watch parties and mornings sick in bed with the flu.

Two dogs and a bunny. A sink full of dishes and candles burned down to the wick. Music playing softly. Music playing loudly. Wet floors from a post-shower game of chase through the house, and windows open wide to let in the sun. Fights and making up, and so very many compromises.

A baby, and then another. Sloppy pigtails and getting caught playing toothfairy. Exhaustion greater than either of them would ever think possible. Happiness even greater. Spilled milk and shopping for training bras and prom dresses and something called a labubu. Hockey practice and dance recitals, and art shows and museums. And, Nine years later, baby number three.

It will be so good. There will be so much time and so much joy. They will look back and barely remember a time they weren't sure of the future.

But right now, Adam watches Charlie chat with the girl from second period English. Charlie wars with himself to stop looking over at Adam, to stop hoping he is looking back. Right now it is complicated. New. Scary in a way that also feels a little exhilarating.

There are alot of sleepless nights in the near future. Each of them laying in the midnight silence 5 feet apart, staring at their dorm ceiling and wishing things could be different, easier. Longing for something neither of them truly expects to get. Something that will become everything, if they can just get through now.

There was nothing about sex that truly appealed to Harry. Nothing that couldn't be achieved with his hand and far less awkward small talk, anyway. Then, of course, the aftermath. The 'that was great' when it really wasn't, or the 'I'll owl you' when neither of them would. There was also the ever annoying voice in the back of his head that kept calling him The Boy Who Lived To Disappoint In Bed that kept him from truly giving his all on the hunt for lovers.

It was all so tedious, uninspiring. He often worried he'd felt so much so early in his life, he was destined for a lackluster future. That having ridden the entire spectrum of emotion many times over, he was simply existing now. Conscious but less and less sentient by the day.

But... Draco Malfoy.

A heated argument over the politically correct term for half giant beings on an MLE report.

A bright blue smoothie that smelled like liquid sugar poured over dress robes.

A locked office door and not at all suffiently cast sound dampening spell.

Kissing Draco Malfoy felt like opening a large window inside a stagnant house on a breezy, sunny day. Warm and wonderful and necessary. A very stark contrast to the suffocating nothingness from seconds before. There would be no closing that window. No way to breathe again without him now that he knew what fresh air felt like.

It was all at once exhilarating and terrifying. Because it was Draco. And, well, it was Draco. He would need more. He would need everything.

And, for the first time ever, he thought it might actually be great, and that he would want to send an owl after.

Harry knew this. Knew that in a just world, Draco wouldn't be laughing and arguing with Ron about quiddich, simply for the delight of winding him up.

But just and fair are not the same.

Because in a just world, Harry would be lonely. He wouldn't get to kiss the pink of Draco's cheek as he rolled his eyes and laughed along, refusing to mediate between the two because bickering was the language of their friendship, even if they'd never admit it.

In a fair world, though...

Harry, who sacrificed so much, got to be happy. And Draco Malfoy made him happy.

I have been MIA for a while, and a big part of that was the unexpected and unavoidable loss of over 500k notes from various fics/wips from my phone. I have completely lost motivation since and writing has been frustrating and not enjoyable at all. Maybe I'll get back to it soon. Maybe not. More tiny little bits of my unpublished college Banksway WIP because why the fuck not?

"We're friends, and I don't actually have enough of those to lose one for some casual sex" Adam says with a small sigh.

He leaves Charlie sitting on the bed, unable to muster the energy to go after him and ask what the hell that even means. The words feel like arrows, and Charlie can't help but think how weird it is that everyone talks about heartbreak like it's in the actual heart, when all he wants to do now is be sick.

The heartbreak comes a little while later, though.

There it is, he thinks, lying in bed listening to Adam's soft breaths as he sleeps. His chest aches like it never has before, longing and painful, so deep it feels like all that hurt might actually be physical somewhere inside of him, and he googles the symptoms of a heart attack, knowing it's stupid. The internet says he could have something called angina, but Charlie thinks it's probably just Adam Banks being 8 feet away and a million miles away at the same time. And it's not fair, really, how much it hurts to lose something he never even had in the first place.
