“Ah! That’s right! Haetae is Rocky’s dad ain’t he~?” Ryu chuckled, until he heard the thunderous sound of paws across the sand!

“Roooooo!!” 

The howl of the massive Fire Type echoed out through the beach as he sped towards them! Kicking up large amounts of sand! A large frizbee would drop at Ryu’s feet and he was completely ignored! 

The Fire-Type was busy whining, licking at Chiyo’s face before brushing against her in circles! Star baby!

It wasn’t until he made his second round on Chiyo that he noticed Odette! His large fluffy tail wagging at the sight of her. He would lean his head forward and begin to sniff at her, was she a new friend?

“E-easy Haetae…” Ryu would step between them, grabbing the Arcanine’s fur around his neck, which made him sit down. “Good boy~ This here is Odette, no jumping…”

“Have you seen an Arcanine in real life before Odette?” Tatsu asked as he made his way to her side, smiling warmly. “He’s really soft and warm, probably the friendliest of dad’s Pokemon…then again the rest are all Dragons except for his Persian.”

The blue haired twin would urge Odette to reach out to the large Pokemon, who eagerly awaited pets, letting out loud excited whines.

“He’s basically a giant puppy!”

Odette was immediately caught off-guard by the large Pokemon. That... was definitely a larger dog than the Furfrou’s back home! She hesitated for a second, but then reached her hand slowly out towards him, “G-good doggy...” He looked like he could bite her whole arm off, but... this whole trip was a chance for her to get out of her comfort zone, so instead of shying away, she did reach out to greet the large Pokemon. 

“I’ve only heard about Arcanine through class.“ Odette admitted.

!! Ryu quickly broke his gaze! His face a deep red as he quickly turned away, clearing his throat! 

“W-Well don’t get too ahead of yerself Tatsu! Remember! We’re still waiting for ‘him’ to get back after all! He should of found his toy by now!” He reminded his twin brother before glancing back over his shoulder at Chiyo.

“Yer favorite dog friend is here wanderin’ the beach! Dad brought him along because he said he misses you and Aura…”

“That’s right! Haetae’s here!” He grinned, before pausing, blinking at Odette.

“Ahh…you’ve never met Haetae or dad huh Odette…?” He stepped up, giving her a quick head pat and grinning. “Ah, hope you’re ready, Chiyo’s gonna be tackled but it won’t be much to worry about! Haetae’ll be your best friend even if you don’t want him to be! He’s a really good dog~”

“Tackled?“ Odette echoed. Wait? Ryu and Tatsu’s Father was here? Suddenly she felt a spike of anxiety spread through her. No, she hadn’t met their father, or Haetae before...though, she couldn’t help but wonder what kind of man raised Ryu and Tatsu?

Unlike Odette, Chi was more than happy to show off her swimsuit. Probably because it was just friends nearby. Had they been on a public beach, her reaction would be 100% different, and there would be no way she’d wear a bikini… even if it was cute, and yellow and green.

She pulled away from Odette, and did a little twirl, causing the lacy, see-through beach skirt around her hips to twirl out on either side of her for a second, “Thanks!” Though, it took twice as long as normal to get out here because Odette took so long getting ready, but whatever. 

Chi shifted her weight from foot to foot, and curled her toes through the sand as she contemplated Tatsu’s question, before placing her hands on her hips, “Uh… I dunno? I was thinking we’d just hang around the beach today? Maybe go swimming, go exploring, tan a little? I dunno… what do you guys think?” 

Odette looked down at her feet, “I um... am up for anything?” 

She could feel Ryu staring at her, but couldn’t bring her own eyes up at anyone.

Odette slowly walked across the beach. She could feel the soft, Alolan sand, between her toes, and clutched onto her friend, Chi’s arm, tightly. She was wearing a light blue one peice swimsuit, that came with a built-in, ruffly skirt... which was way more than many other people on the beach was wearing, but she still felt completely, and utterly, exposed. She’d never worn so little outside of the school’s uniform swimwear... and certainly never outdoors. 

She felt slightly embarrassed, and struggled against the urge to hide her face. 

Calm down. She told herself. You’re on vacation. No one is here to police you. Relax already. You are miles away from anyone who expects you to be ‘perfect’... so just enjoy the beach. 

...Easier thought than done... especially as they crossed the beach, and started towards the others. 

“U-um! Good morning!“ She called out as they approached. Despite it being early, it was already quite warm out. The joys of the tropics, she guessed.

Exploring Hau'oli City!

Chi adjusted her hat on her head. She had gotten a text message late last night that someone had arrived, and had gotten a room next to hers! 

So, before the boys woke up, and the others arrived, Chi was excited to spend some time with her friend. The plan for today? Explore Hau’oli City! 

She nodded at her own reflection, and turned to march out of her room, and knock on her neighbor’s door, “Hey Odette! Are you awake yet?”

There was only a second or two of delay, before Odette opened the door, “Chi! Good morning!” She held the door open for the other, “Oh, um! Before I forget, thank you for inviting me!”

“Mm…” Tatsu turned to Chiyo, “Our Great Grandfather was a Blackthorn native, instead of going through the traditional life style…he set out on his own, searching out Dragon Pokemon and passing knowledge of them down to people he came across, just like how our old man did…but a lot of the Blackthorn natives didn’t approve of it…this guy must come from one of the families…”

“I don’t care what background you’ve got with them,“ Chi huffed at the guy after hearing Tatsu’s explanation, “But here on school grounds we’ve got rules. Students can’t battle outside an arena and without a Teacher present! So if you want to pick a fight, do it there!“ 

She wasn’t quite sure of the whole story here, but this guy seemed like a jerk! 

Odette knew about ‘alternative’ family traditions all too well. But still... 

She turned towards Ryu, and looked down at his Bagon, “I-Is he okay? We should take him to the Pokemon Center!”

“Izanagi!!!” Ryu’s voice would cry out, the towering figure of a Dragonite had sent the smaller dragon flying to the side with just a simple backhand! Causing the blonde to run after the poor smaller dragon, jumping to catch him in his arms.

The force was enough to knock him off his feet and collide into the stairs Tatsu just ran down with a loud grunt! A clear, visible shoe print was seen on the small Bagon’s helmet like head…

Chi ran after Tatsu, completely confused on what he was freaking out about, until they got outside and saw Ryu battling some stranger. She got outside just in time to hear the guys last statement, which only made her even more confused.

“Hey! What’s going on here?!“ She gasped.

“R-Ryu!“ Odette shouted! She ran after Tatsu towards Ryu, “A-are you okay?!“ 

She had no idea what was going on, but it looked like Ryu lost a battle?!

“You guys know Swanna have teeth, right?” Tatsu would ask as he walked down the hallway with his two friends, glancing back at Chiyo and Odette. “It’s like. super weird, but they have them on their tongue?? Maybe Odette has weird taste in Pokemon~” He teases!

“And guys.”

He held his books firmly under his arm as he walked with a stride, before pausing and glancing out the window with a blink. Seeing a familiar blonde on the school’s battlegrounds with a unfamiliar red head.

“Uhm…guys?”

“Yes but, they’re still so pretty!“ Odette replied. She slowed to a stop when Tatsu paused, but didn’t see what he was looking at...

He was silent for a second, it wasn’t that he was at a loss of words or thinking of it. Ryu just had to take in what she said last, his head would slowly nod, and he would embrace Odette from behind!

“Sorry…” she could hear him whisper, “I didn’t mean to…push you or anything of the sort if I did…” His voice became quieter, he could feel his own eyes tearing up, droplets occasionally hitting Odette’s shoulder.

“B-But yeah…until I leave but still…I’m still hoping my dream will come true with you…because I can’t stand seeing you frown…or seeing you hurt. Someone as amazing as you deserves to be free, to show your smile off to the world…” His hands would shift in front of her during the embrace to hold the box of chocolate he made for her, urging her to take it.

Odette closed her eyes. She liked him... but the way he continued after she asked him to stop frustrated her a bit. She sighed, and pulled away from him, and repeated herself a little more straight-forwardly, “Stop talking about that.” 

She huffed, and didn’t immediately accept the box. Instead, she took a step back, and raise a finger towards him, before putting her other hand on her hip, “But you have to promise me you won’t put off your journey for me! Okay? And that you’ll try to keep me updated and maybe send me pictures?”

Ryu paused, he felt his heart sink as she began to walk towards the elevator, he was quick to act however as he reached out, placing his hand on her shoulder. “I don’t want someone to help me on my dreams…I don’t want just anyone…”

“…Maybe I’m the one sounding selfish right now…Because it wouldn’t be the same if it was just anyone else…” His voice was hushed now, quivering ever so slightly as he bit his lip and steadied his nerves.

“…I’m sure you would know that too Odette…” He felt his arm shake slightly as his eyes were glued to the floor of the tower. 

“You know what…maybe what I’m saying is crazy, maybe…me wanting this makes me crazy, my dreaming of this is crazy, but…It’s what I want, it’s what I’m willing to push forward too. Even if it’s less than an inch, day by day….”

He would exhale to only swallow again. “…What’s the point in living life without seeing what’s out there…? To live a life without experiencing what everyone our age would be? Yeah, we’re a bit past that age where we could go out on a journey on our own terms…and I…”

He felt stupid for almost saying this, he felt selfish, he felt like the worst person. Yet he held no ill will for Odette’s family. He had no idea what was going on but Ryu would do what he always does.

Bowing his head quickly toward his friend! His voice would raise.

“Even if it means running away with you…I’d still take that risk and shoulder that with you Odette!”

Ryu, please.

Odette stopped as he put his hand on her shoulder, “Ryu... please...stop.” She reached up to wipe her eyes on her jacket sleeve. She didn’t want to think about that. About how she’ll never get to see the world. But she couldn’t run away. Not with thousands of years of traditions and the way of life of hundreds of people weighing down on her shoulders. 

She clenched her hands to her chest, and looked down at her feet, “I can’t run away... b-but maybe... we can... see each other, until you leave?”

His yellow eyes would fall to her as he took her words in, tipping his head to the side, he would reach a hand out to her, and hold fast to his smile.

“Maybe I don’t understand, but would you really think that’s going to stop me?” he asked her with a raise of his brow.  “What was it that you came up with when you thought on this? Hm? B’sides..achieving my dreams….” He mumbled, slowly gripping her hand as his gaze went upwards toward the sky, before he used his free hand to point at the horizon. “One of them is to see what’s out there, beyond Yggdra and Kalos! Beyond where even your family has influence! A dream where we can walk side by side and make memories of the sights and the time…places where we can look back on when we’re older and laugh!”

Ryu still grinned ear to ear as he spoke, “Family can thrust their expectations upon their next generation as much as they want, but that doesn’t mean they need to follow through with it! Your path, your destiny is yours to take hold of with your own two hands! You just gotta be willing enough to do just that!”

He gave a slight pause, his fingers slowly locking between her own. “There’s always a way…even if it takes a long time, I’ll find one. I’ll find a way where both of us can be happy and by each other’s side…That’s what I really want. I want to travel with my friends…and I want the most amazing girl I know to be laughing with me every step of the way…”

She felt a small tangle of frustration build in her chest for a second, but it quickly melted to sadness, and she turned away from him, “I can’t expect you to understand... but it’s much, much more than family expectations, Ryu... I can’t leave Kalos, and I’ll never be allowed to travel!” 

Hearing him talk about his dreams made her eyes water, and without thinking, she started back towards the elevator so he couldn’t see her start to cry again, “Y-you’re better off finding someone who’s free to help you on your dreams.”

“ Odette Segal…No matter what happens, no matter who has something to say about how I feel for you…” His hand would slowly come and hover over his own heart. “I’ll always feel as strongly as I do for you now…”

She didn’t fight it, and let him guide her towards Lumiose Tower, and listened in silence. Her eyes looked down at the floor as the elevator moved up. She found it hard, if not impossible to look at him as he spoke, and felt a light blush cross her cheeks as he spoke. 

She put her own hands on the railing, “You don’t understand...” She looked over the Lumiose landscape before her, and felt the wind brush through her hair, “I... I mean, I’ve thought of what could happen if I could... but I can’t.” She turned to finally look at Ryu. 

“My family has more power and influence in the Kalos Region than even the King! Even if you aren’t afraid of the consequences, I am for you!“ She removed her hands from the railing, and clutched them up at her chest, “And... I am expected to become the next Xerneas Priestess... I’ll have to dedicate my life to the Xerneas Tree. E-even if we could... b-be more than-“ her face flustered, and she broke eye contact with him to look back down at the ground, “-friends... if you were with me, you wouldn’t be able to travel or achieve your dreams! I-It would be too selfish of me...“

“Ah! No! Not at all!” Ryu would instantly light up at the sight of the other, his hands fidgeting with the box in his grasp as he tried his best to hide it behind his back!

“A-Ah uhm. Odette….well…” He was having trouble finding words as his face went a deep red tint before he would reveal the box to her which held a hand made chocolate Ducklett!

“Mm…Will you be my Valentine…ya know…?”

Odette gasped when she saw the present, and covered her mouth with her hands. She looked like she was going to cry again, and quickly turned around to face away from him, “R-Ryu... I-I...” She remembered what happened at the aquarium and didn’t want a repeat though, so instead of running away this time, she just sucked in a deep breath, “Y-you know I can’t. I-I’m so sorry...” 

She still couldn’t look at him, “I like you, like, a lot... but my family...” would never allow it. In fact, there would be a high chance of them doing something drastic if they even ever found out about this, “...I don’t want to hurt you.” She added softly, “B-because I do like you... but...”

“Mmh…”

Ryu was extremely nervous, he went all out to look good with his meeting outside of school with Odette, all to ask her a simple question and to spend as much time as he could with her today!

He stood by a street sign in Lumiose where he told her to meet, if she would show up that is, fidgeting the large box he held behind his back as he would exhale nervously, letting his breath come out in puffs in the cold Kalos air.

As time passed he would continue to grow more nervous, would she even show up? Or would someone forbid her to leave her home…? Thoughts continue to run through Ryu’s mind, she was from a super wealthy family after all, outside of school she would probably be caught dead hanging around someone like him…

Odette walked up to Ryu with a slightly brisk pace. She was bundled up in a faux-fur coat, and matching ear-muffs. She looked more like she was on her way to a fancy dinner, than to meet a friend. 

“S-sorry to keep you waiting!” She greeted, “Were you here long?“

The New Years Ball in the Yggdra Castle was always a pleasure for the Ochita family. Mom and dad were already dazzling the floor, a beautiful pair as always. Tadahiro, though, was walking through the crowd outside of the dance floor, looking for an opening to head towards one of the balconies. 

Before he made it though, he bumped into someone.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, miss!” Hiro gasped, holding out his hand to hold her glass steady, “I didn’t spill your drink on you, did I?”

Odette startled as someone walked into her, but calmed down almost instantly. She turned towards him, and gave him a light smile, “Oh! No, you didn’t! It’s alright, you don’t need to apologize!”

“Whoever said you had to ask? Just because you can’t yet or sometime soon, doesn’t mean you won’t ever be able too~” Ryu would chime in a happy tone as he watched her open her present.

He was happy she seemed excited about it, he even offered to help her put it on! “Ah? Really? So you really do like it huh?” He asked her quietly, his blush glowing. He hoped so! It looked really good on her!

“It’s gorgeous. Thank you!“ she held it gently in both hands, and repeated, “T-thank you, Ryu!“ 

She was never going to take it off!

“You didn’t need to get me anything honestly, I just…well…thought you’d like it.” he would admit, turning his head to try to hide the blush that tinted his cheeks red now. Inside of the wrapped box would be a shiny Milotic themed necklace with Odette’s name in one of the back of the scales.

“Ah? You really wanna leave huh? Well maybe we can adventure together when we’re ready?” He asked in a hopeful voice, the idea of traveling with Odette, and even their other friends sounded like fun!

“I couldn’t ask that of you.“ She replied, as she removed the last of the wrapping paper, “Due to my...future job, I won’t be able to travel until I am old. I know you want to travel much sooner than that.“ 

Yes... he shouldn’t wait for her. After all, when she comes of age, she will replace the old Xerneas Priestess, and become the new one, where she will remain until the next heir comes of age...

She opened the box and felt a mixture of emotion ranging from awe, to sadness. It almost felt cruel. Still, she smiled and reached up to put the necklace on, “Thank you so much, Ryu! I’ll treasure it!”
