alchemy of souls — episode 10
My chaotic amazing couple. 💙
Princess Hours (2006)
Hello, again. It’s time for another story-telling to one of my fave classic kdrama, Princess Hours. 👑
This is a modern korean royal romantic comedy drama. Yes, you read it right. Hahaha! The way I describe the genre is long but it is what it is. The Crown Prince Shin (Ju Ji-hoon) and Chae-kyung (Yoon Eun Hye) started at the wrong foot but little do they know they need to be wed as soon as possible as the illness of the King gets worse as days go by and also because it was clearly stated in the last words of Chae-kyung’s grandfather that at first, they thought it was just only a joke from him.
Those teddy bears are included in every ending of an episode as they pose as the highlights of the story.
Here's one to show it to you. Aren't they cute? ♥
Ju Ji-hoon is your tall, dark and handsome guy and his role was to be a cold-blooded Crown Prince, however, he has this hidden soft side that only Chae-kyung knows whenever they are together. He may be a Crown Prince but he also has this longing for a quiet and peaceful life, as well as, yearning for love that a high position like he is entitled with can never provide. As for Yoon Eun Hye, she is so beautiful and she got that boyish kind of beauty that she can really pull it off every single time. Her role in the drama was a cutie high schooler that is very friendly, adorable and has a soft heart at times, but she also knows how to stand her ground and stick to her principles in life.
SYNOPSIS
The series starts off with the news that Shin's father, Emperor Lee Hyeon of Korea, is seriously ill. There is a grim outlook on the Emperor's health, driving the imperial family to find Shin a suitable consort that will allow him to ascend to the throne if the situation requires. Despite being in love with the ambitious and talented ballerina Hyo-rin (whom he initially proposed to and was rejected), Prince Shin eventually marries a commoner to whom he was betrothed by his grandfather, the late Emperor Seongjo, in an agreement with the girl's grandfather. His new wife is the headstrong yet lovable Chae-kyung and despite initially feeling nothing for each other, love eventually blossoms between the couple. © Wikipedia
FAVE SCENES 🎬
✏“How to be a Princess?”
Chae-kyung (Yoon Eun Hye) was so adorable learning about royal stuff and she was really determined to learn about everything as her soon-to-be husband was still very cold to her so, she just focus on her lessons and did not mind about the Crown Prince’s business. However, as it was announced that she will be the Crown Princess, she became an outcast at school and she was having a hard time because they were very strict on her about learning the rules of the palace and its constitution, but the strong girl that she is, she was able to adjust and lighten up in doing it as Yul (Kim Jeong Hoon), known as the son of Crown Prince Soo, helped her with the things that she can’t understand on her own except that the Queen was bothered with their friendship.
✏“Roadtrip with the Queen Dowager”
Roadtrips! Do you also love having roadtrips with your loved ones or with your friends? Because, I do. Hahahaha! And that is why I loved this scene.
Shin and Chae-kyung had a really fun and exciting time with Her Majesty. They dressed down as to not attract the media and so that they can enjoy the roadtrip peacefully and without any distractions. This was also the time when Shin and Chae-kyung had the time to talk seriously about what did Shin had to go through as he was suddenly declared as the Crown Prince at such a young age and that he was always in the limelight that everybody knows who he was already. Also, Chae-kyung assured him that he is worthy of his position as Shin had decided to quit being the Crown Prince since there were a lot of issues going on inside the palace that involves him. He also expressed his side that Chae-kyung needs to be by his side when everything goes wayward.
Another thing, their car needs to be towed in as the time they want to go back, the car had some issues and that was so funny because the Queen Dowager, herself asked the servants to keep this on the down low as to not spread rumours.
✏“Quick Getaway”
Shin decided to have a quick getaway with Chae-kyung and they went to the beach even though the sky and the weather was kind of gloomy, still they had fun, run around the shore and took a lot of photos, also, Shin took a video of Chae-kyung making cute faces. Then, it suddenly rained and so, they decided to get inside the car for a while and enjoy the sound of the rain.
Eun Hye is soooo cute! 💕
After that, they went to the summer palace to stay for the night. As they cherish the view of the place, Chae-kyung insisted to go eat already as she was hungry, so they went to the grocery store together and Shin just gets a whole lot of things but Chae-kyung always puts them back.
This part was really cute as they were really enjoying their time together just like a normal husband and wife would do. They also did all the cooking and stuff for their dinner. From what I observe in this scene, it really felt like all their actions were adlib because they really are so adorable goofing around the kitchen (but always be careful in the kitchen, my friends).
One of the things I love about this particular scene was that Shin was finally opening up about his feelings to Chae-kyung. Like, he’s slowly realizing and asking himself what if she’s not there beside him anymore. How could he spend his day without her annoying him and all that, so he said that he enjoyed her company and that they should think about living together for real for the rest of their lives. ❤
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
There are still a lot of lovely scenes that I really want to mention but that would mean I need to write the whole story of Princess Hours. Hahaha! 😅
The Original Soundtrack was divine, as it compliments the perfect moments in every episode. One of my fave was Perhaps Love by J and Howl. It has a really nice melody and it really got stuck in my head as it was a song whenever Shin and Chae-kyung had honest moments together.
I want to compliment how good Song Ji Hyo as Hyo Rin because I was annoyed by her character. She really was so effective as the second female lead, creating some confusion, misunderstanding and jealousy between the main leads as well as the Royal family. Also, with Prince Yul played by Kim Jeong Hoon, he did pretty well with creating chaos inside the palace every chance he got as he claimed that he should be the Crown Prince.
Princess Hours is a classic k-drama that revolves around the modern world of the Royal Family and as a viewer, it was a beautifully presented fairytale. The amazing chemistry of Ju Ji-hoon and Yoon Eun Hye was very evident in every scene, the tension and the slow – burn type of love between them was felt immensely and I think that is one of the reasons why it was adored by many.
The ending was heartwarming and surprising as Shin’s older sister became the reigning monarch and also, the Queen Dowager gave her own engagement ring to Shin as she knows that Chae-kyung really loves him and that he wanted to renew their vows for this time they truly love each other without any arrangements and royal involvement.
She did not accept right away the proposal of Shin but she has other thoughts on how she will answer back to him and it was kind of adorable the Chae-kyung made the rings as a pendant. 🥰
Let me tell you a little secret, Ju Ji-hoon and Yoon Eun Hye had a kissing scene at Myeongdong, the busiest and most crowded street of South Korea. They were told to walk happily and kiss out of the blue in the middle of many people and that the camera man will stay afar as to not gain attention from the crowd, however, that time they were wearing hats and they needed to take it off when they kiss and so, they did it but the people there were shocked as they didn’t have any idea at all that they were shooting and they thought Ji-hoon and Eun Hye were actually dating then they took a lot of photos of them as what bystanders will do when you see celebrities together. All in all, it was recorded beautifully as the reactions were raw and real. This was actually revealed by Eun Hye in Knowing Brothers, a variety show of JTBC.
So, I am so glad I got to watch this because it is one of the best youth and romantic comedy k-dramas out there. 💯⭐💞
My Girl (2005)
The first kdrama that I ever watched, thanks to my Mom who introduced it to me.
At first, I was like how can I understand this as the english subtitles are so fast to appear on the screen and I cannot focus much on what's happening in the story already. Hahaha! But then, It's too soon that I have said that because as I continue to watch, I finally fell in love with it. ❤
So, My Girl falls in the RICH GUY - POOR GIRL trope and I definitely fell right into it. The fact that the main leads were Lee Dong Wook (Seol Gong Chan) and Lee Da Hae (Joo Yoo Rin), well, their chemistry was beyond what I expected. Also, the supporting casts, especially, Lee Joon Gi (Seo Jung Woo) and Park Si-yeon (Kim Sae Hyun), added some flavor to the plot as they were the cause of jealousy and misunderstanding between the couple. The others as well contributed to the fun and comedic flow in every episode.
SYNOPSIS
Joo Yoo-rin lives with her father, who is addicted to gambling. Because of her father's debts, Yoo-rin has become particularly skilled at lying and grifting. When her father escapes the island to hide from his debtors, Yoo-rin is determined to support herself and clear up the debts. One day, she meets Seol Gong-chan, the sole heir to the L'Avenue Hotel fortune.
To grant his grandfather's dying wish, Gong-chan employs Yoo-rin to act as his grandfather's long-lost granddaughter. Offering a monthly salary plus a bonus, he asks her to do what she does best—to put on an act. Not wishing to lie to a dying man, yet desperate for the money, Yoo-rin takes the offer and starts playing the long-lost granddaughter. (c) Wikipedia
FAVE SCENES 🎬
✏ "Bluff Scene"
The part where Seol Gong Chan was confused with his feelings for Joo Yoo Rin as she continues to tell him bluffs and stuff to tease him. As they were out that night, Yoo Rin tells him that when he closes his eyes and count backwards from 5 then after that the first person that he will see is the love of his life. The naive Gong Chan did the thing and the shock on his face was so obvious as the one he did see right after doing it was Joo Yoo Rin and he said "I must be going crazy." (Well, he is crazy, crazy in love with her but he's still in denial. 😏)
I personally chose this as one of my faves for this was the start where Gong Chan is kind of aware of his feelings already. I, too, was giddy that he did the thing just to prove that it may be true and unexpectedly, he saw Joo Yoo Rin first.
✏ "Baking Scene"
I super love this part as this showed their playful and 'sweet' side. Yoo Rin is a foodie and when she sees food, she eats it. Gong Chan's Aunt baked a cake for Mr. Jang, however, Mr. Jang went missing on that day and she needed to get out and find him to clear a misundestanding between them, so she left the cake at the kitchen and said bye to Yoo Rin.
Yoo Rin who stayed at home saw the cake and immediately, she got some fork and right away ate it and also, Gong Chan saw her eating the whole cake (yes, the whole thing hahahahaha), however, she conscientiously gave a slice to Gong Chan. Here comes the fun part, Gong Chan's Aunt called Yoo Rin to tell her that she found Mr. Jang as they are now okay and that they are on the way home to eat the cake she made for him. Upon hearing that, Yoo Rin panicked and asked Gong Chan for help. Hahahahaha! At first, Gong Chan doesn't want to help her since she ate all of it as for him, he only took a bite as Yoo Rin already snatched away the cake from him. After all the pleading, he did help but just to guide her in baking the exact same cake. While they're preparing though, Gong Chan seems to lovingly stare at her as she was very cute and clumsy while baking. Finally, they succeeded in making the cake and it was right on time as Gong Chan's Aunt and Mr. Jang were home already.
Look at the way Gong Chan is staring at her. 💕
✏ "Staircase Scene"
THE MOMENT OF TRUTH. This was the heart pounding scene of the whole story as this was the time that Gong Chan cannot handle it anymore. His feelings were already at its peak as this was also the day that Yoo Rin will be officially announced as his biological cousin and if he will not confess then his love for her will vanish as it didn't happen since it will be shown as forbidden love already. So, he turned around his car and drove with his might to go back to the hotel and took Yoo Rin away without any hesitation and without thinking that he will be scolded by his Grandfather with what he did.
I was holding on to my seat while watching this part as I can't accept the fact if Gong Chan didn't go back and fought his love for Yoo Rin.
That hand-grabbing and tight hug moment. 🥰
FINAL THOUGHTS 💭
As this was my first kdrama, it really felt like a rollercoaster ride because there was a lot of misunderstanding between the main leads and a lot of bickerings, too. While watching it, there's this 'what if' feeling as you really don't know what's going to happen in the next scene, although this was a cliche romantic comedy, it was unpredictable. Also, this was written by Hong Sisters, the famous writers who likes to do big plot twists and sad endings but fortunately, we got a happy ending for this one.
Lee Dong Wook and Lee Da Hae did an amazing job with their roles, specially, Lee Da Hae, as she was so adorable with her comedic acts. For Lee Dong Wook, I did not expect him to be so cute also and my oh my, he is so handsome and with that natural pink lips of his, he is divine. Lee Joon Gi, as well, his long hair suits him as he had the role of a bad boy type with a soft heart. Whenever he cries in a scene, I feel like crying too. Hahahaha! That's how effective he is as an actor.
Overall, it was a really romantic, fun, heart pounding kdrama. I would definitely recommend this one to a beginner as it's one of the classics.
