YES, THE WORST OF IT IS THAT SHE'S SEEN BELOW THE MASK ⸺ to the face underneath, swollen with mislaid blood and misplaced youth. both make dove wince.

"than start laying down for better."

the palm that meets his ribcage is flat and soft ⸺ seemingly unused to meeting resistance. her tone carries the same traits — level, smooth — but sounds more like a buffed piece of metal.

"go on." the other hand pushes on the round of a shoulder, guiding him back down. "keep trying to push through it and soon you're not going to feel anything at all."

her touch gives him pause. he's trying to be polite. he appreciates the concern, really and genuinely, but he really can't stay here.

dave laughs. "we're already there, so. no worries."

“_way,_” there's a soft giggle that accompanies her insistence. “and i watched all of it,” she binged it, all the while being its biggest critic, she was its biggest fan, “did you watch it too?”

they didn't really talk about their favorite shows together - it was strange, the ways she felt she knew him so well, but couldn't recount little details, such as, “what's your favorite color?” she asks it sudden, because all they had was time, and if he refused to fall asleep, maybe she could get to know him a little better, in the silliest of ways.

“i will,” but she doesn't reach for the remote. she won't. she's fine watching what he wants. “you want anything?”

did he watch it? he can't remember if the flashes of familiarity he has were the commercials or an episode. he assumes the way that he can't recall an actual plotline means, "nah... just heard about it."

"blue." he usually cringes when he says it; the basic boy color. but it's true. like the sky and the water and his eyes, when he takes the time to notice them. "you?" he could take a guess, and he grins about it, but he wants to hear the answer.

"good," he nods. "i'm good. i'm vibing."

“it's gonna be impossible to find,” her face falls, the last of the words die on her llips as the goon clambers into the car, and kate's hand folds around dave's face, palm covering his mouth, her heart hammering hard. she can hear the driver's breathing, or really, lack of breath - he is panting, keys jingle jangling as he turns the ignition.

it dawns on her swiftly, they were undetected. he hadn't seen them crouched together just behind the seat. it's miraculous.

they are too close to even whisper. her ribs are going numb from where he's pressed. she's holding her breath until he taps the dial and music blasts through the van. a sigh of relief - they can detangle, no longer contort.

if they couldn't hear him, he sure as hell couldn't hear them.

“look for something blue.”

dave holds his breath, and then holds it even harder when he feels kate's hand press against his mouth. the van rocks as the driver gets in, slams the door hard, and dave tries to make sure that the movement doesn't make his body move in any way that might make a little bit of noise.

he exhales when the car starts, and the radio comes on. the music selection is actually peak; dave hates to admit it. because if everything goes not according to plan (which, unfortunately, usually happens), they're going to have to knock that dude the fuck out.

dave untangles from kate, rights himself, and then begins picking through the various items scattered all around them. something blue, something blue... he finds a decent amount of blue things that don't really fit the bill, but there is a tiny, metal latched box that slides across the van as it makes a really sharp turn.

It's a light stabbing, and far enough from vital organs for the Slayer to be more chagrined than worried. On her back, and with an oversized weapon mere centimeters from her fingertips, she flicks a bright green gaze toward the very much present and accounted for not victim. "Well, aren't you just bringing unnecessarily bleak vibes to the function this brisk Monday night?"

A pause. "Got a phone? Mine got crushed by big fuzzy and growly over there." She spares a vague motion to the still cooling corpse of her monstrous adversary sprawled snout-first in a puddle. His gnarled claw is graciously imbedded in her side for the trouble.

he sputters a little over, "they are not - it's not unnecessarily." but he doesn't want to say that it is bleak, because that probably wouldn't go over very well with her, from what he's learned in the past ten seconds. "that's definitely bigger than anything even the biggest band aid could solve.

"yeah, i have a phone." dave gives the corpse a very wide berth as he steps around it to come to her side. "i'm assuming you don't want me to dial 911 or anything."

"I've seen worse." Her tone is unmistakably earnest. Technically? Not a lie. Blossom Utonium's been weaned on Kaiju attacks, monster nemeses, and the occasional alien invasion since she could fly. A bit of peek-a-boo with a shin bone isn't the end of the world.

"Do I get to sign the cast?" A roseate gaze is level on blue. Blossom is distracting him with the ease of a professional while the EMTs arrive. Civilian casualties abound in these kinds of situations. He's being a terribly good sport about it all things considered.

oh, she's seen worse. that does fill him with a sense of calm, regardless of how vague it is. the fact that he isn't, probably, going to die here is then immediately followed by wondering how long this is going to put him out of commission for. he can't patrol the streets in a cast. on crutches. that's fucking absurd.

"yeah, you can - yeah. you get first dibs." he looks down at his leg. holy shit. "you probably deserve it."

thirty one days without incident. they're between a rock and a hard place, as these things so often go. they've been spotted slinking around the ring, a seedy underground club. they're catching the wrong kind of attention, even as she drags dave down the hall from the men's bathroom by hand, away from prying eyes.

“might need to make an exception tonight."

he does hope not. he's much more of a blunt force guy: kicking, punching, headbutting occasionally, using the batons. when it comes to things like slashing, hacking, stabbing. . . it's just not really his strong suit. (plus maybe he has some ptsd with knives. sue him; it's not important.)

he hears you, kate. deep down, he actually agrees, but he's in the very brief stage of optimism (denial). give it a second. "like, as a last resort. for sure."
