“Martyr”

Oil on Panel

Medieval medical practice originates largely from pre-existing ideas of spirituality. Faith was used heavily as a basis for medical practice and homeopathic remedies. Causes of illness were based on that of sin or astral influences, and treatment was done through prayer, offerings, and worship to a deity or martyr of their faith. Appropriating Western European imagery of martyrdom through the use of ambiguous bodies and forms stresses the cross-cultural attraction to spirituality and a lack of scientific understanding regarding human anatomy.
