Without them the soul of St Joe will be swallowed by the gigantic Big Box retail monster. The event will be held in conjunction with the Apple Blossom Festival, on Friday, May 4th, and Saturday, May 5th, 2012 on the 500 block of Felix Street. This is entirely volunteer-driven by people looking to the future of St Joseph while utilizing historic spaces.

Keep St Joe Weird will operate a screen printing pop-up shop with street performer staff and shirts donated by Occupy St Joseph.

'The dilemma of dirty hands' Outsider art or folk art is generally devoid of form and perspective, created by self-trained artists, but often mirrors the most famous of religious art. This piece uses the folk aesthetic of working with any available materials and seems to patriotically deify Thomas Friedman, that venerable cheerleader of war and industrial globalization.

St Joseph Music Foundation Jam Swap, April 22 at the Eagles Lodge (no, not the secret hotel hideaway of Don Henley and Joe Walsh; different eagles. 2004 North Belt Highway.) The Jam Swap is a great place to find a gently used instrument on the cheap, jam with other musicians, and sign your act up for JoeStock III. Sunday April 22 from 1pm-7pm

The fantasyland that is the Allied Arts Council's annual Arts Fund video is a single-shot amalgamation of a microcosm inside a Russian nesting doll wrapped in 1/4 of a downtown block.

Whew, that is a potently tiny atmosphere. Like Horton Hears a Who, except all the Whos are shouting the second act of La Boheme, then Bob Shultz flutters by.

How often do you see on the streets of St Joe, steel drummers, violinists, a dance troupe, roller derby girls, a dapper tandem bike couple, and Bob Shultz fluttering by?

A sight like that only happens two times a year, at best. (Maybe more if Magoon's Mushroom Fest was successful.) So donate to the Arts Fund if you have the means, if not, no sweat. But don't be surprised when Bob Shultz flutters by your window groaning "the arts are essential!"

Sunday, March 25, Radkey is playing with lo-fi weirdo blues band The Growlers at Riot Room. And if you don't know the Growlers yet, well, I don't want to sound like a snob, but what's crawling around in your brain, man? (watch 'Something Someone Jr.' on repeat to repent.)

Better Block St Joe is a grassroots effort to revitalize downtown St. Joseph, Missouri through demonstration.

Building anew within the shell of the old.

Step one is to clean up vacant and historic downtown storefronts in preparation for stage two, which is to open fully-functioning temporary "pop-up" businesses and extend the pedestrian space for mingling, people watching, street performing and sidewalk vendors. "All in order to provide a living and breathing visualization of downtown's potential," say the event organizers. Efforts will focus on the 500 block of Felix Street. The event will be held in conjunction with the Apple Blossom Festival, on Friday, May 4th, and Saturday, May 5th, 2012. This is entirely volunteer-driven by people looking to the future of St Joseph while utilizing historic spaces. Keep St Joe Weird fully supports this experiment as it stands on the very precipice of our mission statement:

KC Star reports a human skull unearthed by the 2011 flood near Cheney, Kan., last month was nothing more than a remnant of a six-decade-old Halloween prank, authorities said Wednesday. The former owner of the property told authorities it had been in her family’s possession since an unknown person left it on their doorstep in Circleville in 1949. Tired of lugging the skull around, the ex-owner said, she buried it before moving in 2010. “She figured she would never hear of it again until she was watching the news ... and saw all the detectives searching the backyard,” said Capt. Greg Pollock of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. He said potential buyers of the property noticed a partly-buried white object, kicked it and realized what it was."
